Dined here whilst we were holidaying in the area. Restaurant is upstairs away from the bar and comprises 2 adjoining rooms. We liked the fact it had a country house type feel. The menu was varied. The fish sharing board as a starter was superb and huge!
The steak was flavoursome but although I asked for it “rare” it was nearer medium. There seems to be an inability with chefs to cook rare these days I find.
My husband’s burger was tasty and huge and our daughter had the homemade chicken goujons of which there were plenty.
Desserts were also generous and scrumptious! All in all would recommend.
Nice pub and good dining area upstairs. Some of the staff were a little off hand, not keen to help even though they were not that busy. Came a second time before we left and the staff on duty that night were brilliant and made the dining experience much better.
We had booked the Plough, based on several good reviews. Turned up-to to the restaurant, which was completely empty. We were greeted, by a waiter wearing jeans - which wasn't very professional. We ordered the fish sharing platter for starter, which the waiter said he wouldn't recommend. Food came & was lovely. We also ordered tap water, which was warm with no ice etc. My other half ordered a house red wine, which was out of date and undrinkable. We had to order another drink due to this. Not once were we asked about the wine. We finished what we could, of the two steaks we ordered for our main meal and were left for 20 mins. We also ordered macaroni & cheese as a side, which was merely cheesy pasta. Staff started cleaning up around us, and the waiter had his jacket on. He shouted over and told us to go pay downstairs when we were ready. We paid over £70 for a meal, in which we didn't enjoy, or receive any quality of customer service. This was very disappointing.
The setting was excellent, the waitresses were pleasant, efficient and helpful. The food was excellent, the price was good! We had ( my wife and I) the 22oz rump steak on a sharing board with chips and salad, with a bottle of very acceptable wine - all for £30! I will defo return and recommend to others!
Absolutely delicious food, I had the classic Mussels in Mariniere sauce which was stunning. Very friendly and helpful service from our waitress. My one criticism is that the menu needs to be more detailed, it doesn't tell you about some additional items with certain meals. I hadn't realised that the mussels already came with a portion of chips and so ended up with two, but I guess I could have just asked. We went to celebrate my boyfriend getting a new job and we had a lovely evening.
Lots of items had sold out. I ordered seafood platter when it came I was told they had run out of prawns! so they had given me more of everything else. Would have liked to have been told beforehand. Server was nit very sympathetic more or less told that’s how it is!!
Beef club ??? steak poorly cooked, no T bone, no fillet. rubbish night spoiled a special Birthday, staff were nice , let down by food.
Disappointed avocado was unripe and inedible and disappointed steaks were not cooked as requested. Servers were very pleasant and helpful.
We chose this restaurant for a mother’s day treat. What a great experience all round.
We were greeted on arrival and shown upstairs to the restaurant. The restaurant area looked really smart, cozy and seemed really well looked after.
The waitress showed us to our table and was very attentive throughout our meal.
Now the food - Wow. Me and my wife are particularly known for liking good quality food. I had the lamb roast and it was probably up there with the nicest lamb dinners I’ve ever had. The prawn cocktail starter was really tasty and had a few additions to your standard prawn cocktail that really worked and complemented the dish.
My wife had the beef which was tender sirloin and very tasty. A few of the potatoes were a little tough inside but this would be splitting hairs on an otherwise gorgeous dinner. The pudding I chose was lemon posset - wow. Such a lovely dessert and great end to a lovely dining experience. I guess if I were to look for a negative the only thing I could find would be the hand dryer in the men’s toilet was one of those really annoying low output dryers that dry your hands in a minimum of 10minutes lol
Joking aside, if I were ever nearby again or was visiting Alnwick castle (2 minute walk away) I would definitely look to visit again.
Booked lunch for three people and was not disappointed with the quality of the food. Have eaten here before and would recommend.
Very poor service and average food
Good food and service
Lovely venue with gorgeous food. Something to suit our whole family.
Food excellent would definitely return. Originally booked once we found out it is owned by the same people that has the Jolly Fisherman at Craster which is also excellent.
Met with an old work colleague at the Plough as Alnwick is halfway between Yarm and Edinburgh where he lives. The Plough is close to the 3 free car parks in Greenwell road, one of which has an electric car charging point where I was able to charge the Tesla while dining.
I had the half lobster with beef dripping chips followed by assorted ice creams. All very tasty and a nice quiet atmosphere. Will definitely visit again.
We were a group of 4 celebrating a birthday, we were told on entering at 8pm they were running behind due to a function. We said thats fine and ordered drinks, we were having a good catch up, waitress kept checking if everything was ok. We ordered our food which was mains, no starter. After 45minutes again waitress asking is everything ok, we ordered a bottle of wine. Another 35 minutes passed still no food, we were told it wont be long. So an hour and twenty minutes later our food arrived. Presentation was good, myself and my friend had lamb rump, we thought we would get veg, there was half a parsnip with mash. On cutting our lamb we found it to be raw, not pink, actually bleeding.so it was sent back to the kitchen, it returned without the parsnip but had mange tout instead. Our partners food was luke warm, we had sticky toffee pudding which was also luke warm. We spent £110 , we shouldnt have to take a back seat to a function. If they cant cope they shouldnt take extra bookings. No apology was given, apart from repeatedly telling us they had a function.
The quality of the food was excellent. Will definitely be back.
The food was fabulous, staff were very welcoming and the dinning room extremely pleasant. Unfortunately we chose an evening for a romantic meal that was spoiled by a party of drunken wedding goers who were making so much noise in the next room that we had to raise our voices across the table to be heard. Due to this destroyed ambiance we cut our evening short and so did a few other couples. This could of easy been avoided if only the duty manager had a quiet word with the group. Overall we probably will return but we will try a few other restaurants in the area first.
Great value gastro pub food with considerate service. Recommended!
Great food and relaxed but efficient atmosphere. Ideal as a little treat after a day out or at Alnwick Garden.
It was fantastic as always, never fails to disappoint.
A lovely gastropub! Quite upmarket with an excellent menu to suit all tastes. The service was very good and the food amazing.
Food very good , staff very friendly , only slight niggle the food took a bit of time to be served, saying that it didn't spoil our evening. Room for improvement on the service...
Good location, pleasant to have a pre - dinner drink. Food was good when it arrived, the Chateaubriand was very good. We waited too long from ordering for our starter to arrive
Food was nice. Reasonable value but service very slow, frustrating as it was not busy at all. It was Fathers Day and the fact it wasn't busy might have been a tell tale sign that service is an ongoing issue?? Didn't bother with dessert as we were sure it would have taken ages!!
Won't be going back, but will give one of the other Jolly Fisherman venues a try as the food was nice.
Jolly Fisherman@the Plough is a hit & miss affair. Went with family in early November for a birthday dinner & thoroughly enjoyed it. The food was good & well cooked, no one in the party could fault it. My latest visit however was average. The service was excellent as was our table. The food however let it down, not bad, not good just average, in no way memorable. I will go again but I'm not rushing to do so which I was after my visit in November.
The overall opinion was good based on four of us eating from the festive menu. The food was well presented and tasty. We shared a cheese board which was from a local dairy. We were interested to know exactly what the cheeses were that we were tasting and the waitress said she would find out for us. She didn't even though the restaurant wasn't busy at that time. Apart from that everything went smoothly and we had an enjoyable evening which was a family celebration. Thank you.
I'd booked a lunchtime table in the bar area although the eating area was set towards the back of the plough and decorated really tasteful and vintage chic. I and my fiance had the fisherman's board which sounded lots but didn't seem that big when it got to our table. Nevertheless the food was superb. The service was quick and the drinks although a little steep were gorgeous (large wine £8, ale £4.30). I'd recommend this place simply for the ambience and relaxed setting. I could have stayed there all day.
Food beautiful, only thing is that there were no options for vegetarians on the menu. Aside from that, lovely.
We had lunch on Saturday here with the kids and all thoroughly enjoyed our meal as well as the general festive surroundings of the restaurant at the Plough. Having eaten several times at the Craster pub/ restaurant, we knew the quality of the food and service would be great and we were not disappointed. We'll definitely will come without the children and experience a few of the gins from the extensive menu next time!
Staff were pleasant but the food was disappointing.
Booked this for a Monday evening whilst staying just outside Alnwick. Food and service were good, it was very stuffy in the restaurant, however overall everything was good.
Took friends for dinner. Excellent food and friendly staff. Best ever Eton Mess!! Good value for money. Five star
Very comfortable restaurant, lovely interior, easy to get to, plenty of space for tables. Service a little slow but the food is excellent and well prepared - well worth a visit
Great venue, warm and friendly welcome with attentative staff throughout the evening!
Stopped going here a number of years back as standards started to slip but good to see under new management and return to high quality and standards. Well done and will most certainly be coming back for more!
We were spending a few nights at the Plough Botique Hotel to explore the area. Booked a meal at The Jolly Fisherman on one of the evenings. We were not disappointed. The food was delicious and very well presented. Three had the chicken it was perfectly cooked with a delicious sauce the other chose a Steak again perfectly cooked. Had Cheesecake and Sticky Toffee Puddings for desert. Very nice. Good selection of reasonable priced wines. The staff were all very friendly and made us feel very comfortable.
