Most of the food was fine, but I was concerned about the milk, as the custard tasted funny (and was extremely runny), as did my latte. I discreetly mentioned this to the staff, but they just said that the milk was fine, didn't apologise and just charged me the full bill without even checking the custard or latte. Also I asked if they could put a candle on the pudding as it was my husband's birthday, but they couldn't even do that?! Also, the service was really slow. So was not impressed to be honest. I won't be going again. There are much nicer places around.
This is a hard review to write as the the staff at the Hardwick were all so nice. However, we did experience issues due to the two large parties already booked in. So I would like to highlight the issues below but state it wouldn’t stop me from going again:
Our food was very slow (although we were warned of this as members of our party were late) but it was a long wait
The food was great but we were not offered any side dishes / suggested veg options which would have been nice.
We asked for several things which either did not turn up (mayonnaise for my burger and chips, a portion of veg which did not arrive before our meal was finished, etc)
The service just felt extremely rushed as the staff were so busy.
It also felt like the kitchen were unable to cope with the level of orders.
On the plus side the food was really nice and I would go again just for the fact the food was good and we felt the staff did their best under the circumstances. I would check first though if there were any large parties in.
Slowest service ever. We told them that we had a hard stop in 1h, so went straight for mains. 45 minutes later, still no food (Friday afternoon business lunch, over half the tables empty). They said it was "just coming"...10 minutes later, we had literally 5 minutes before the client had to leave.
Terrible service. Ordered a burger clean (with just cheese). Came with caramelized onions, tomato, and lettuce. Didn't take a single bite. Order a steak rare (borderline blue). Came out medium.
Terrible dessert. Took 25 minutes for the crumble. Clearly in a microwave.
Watched two other tables have to cancel their desserts, etc. too as the service was so slow
The meal was the worst meal we have ever had at the bell. We told the manager.
Greeted by locals as we walked in - such a welcoming atmosphere - attentive service without being fussed around and excellent food, beautifully presented. Got to know a very friendly cocker spaniel in the bar. What's not to like!
The langoustines were amazing - not had a prawn that big in a pub before! and so was the lamb rump - really tender and a decent portion. Try a glass of the Valpolicella Ripasso.
We arrived between lunch and dinner so wasn’t very busy at this time.
The food was presented well and tasted very good, they had a good choice on the menu plus a specials board to chose from.
Service was great.
Interesting menu with some nice veggie and fish options
Nice ambiance and great service and value
Fabulous Sunday Lunch. The Roast beef was so tender with good portions of accompaniments. I had gluten free yorkshire puddings. Several of us had a lovely Organic red wine which we could have buy the glass, despite the face it was one of the better ones on offer, perfect as we were driving. No need to buy a bottle. So often the wine you get at pubs tastes awful so this was a real pleasure. The puddings were delicious - a cherry cheesecake with homemade cherry sorbet, a chocolate brownie with mint ice cream and I had the most delicious gluten free crumble - apple, plum and raspberry. Already booked to return this weekend with other friends. Certainly the best pub food around Aylesbury at normal gastopub prices - not trying to compete with the fine dining Chequers and certainly not charging its prices. But just beautiful food. Definitely recommend.
The food was really fab. The choice was great & all 4 chose something different.
Highly recommend a vist
Great ambience wonderful food. Good afternoon spent with friends
The restaurant was very hot and there was no way of altering the temperature which is not very helpful. The menu choice was limited for those who want tradional food but there was another " special / pub food " board ( cheaper options I might add ) which was not heavily promoted until we asked why there was not fish and chips . Then the board was collected from another table as they have finished using it but I felt this should of been an option from the start . For a saturday night the place lacked atmosphere and was not overly busy. If you want a nice quiet meal then The Bell would be fine but an evening out it was lacking abit for me.
Food was decent portion size , fruit crumble dessert was delicious.
First visit and had a very enjoyable meal to celebrate my birthday. Lovely setting, delicious food which was enjoyed by all, attentive staff. Will definitely be back.
Staff friendly, service great, food lovely. Would recommend.
Has been a bit hit or miss of late but this was a lovely Sunday roast and the service was excellent. The only complaint was no nut roast for our one vegetarian at the table (Beanburger doesn’t really go with roast)
But overall a good Sunday Lunch thanks.
1st visit to The Bell we were pleasantly surprised food was fabulous and the staff very welcoming. We would definitely visit again.
I am not a fan of dining out in the UK. We have a place in Turkey where food is wonderful and cheap.
So Uk with its high prices and poor “factory food” does not inspire me to go out dining.
Here though we have a lovely experience. The warm welcome, log fires and the food is lovely.
Portions are on the small side but with a two course lunch at £14 there is more than sufficient, all freshly cooked.
We love this place. Do visit.
Delicious roast dinner, generous portion sizes. Friendly and efficient staff. Really lovely cosy pub.
Lovely, friendly pub, perfect for a Roast dinner with family. Happy to accommodate young children and made our daughter feel extremely welcome. Food was delicious and just the right amount. Have already booked to go back with a larger party.
It was my first time here and I visited with a friend who happens to be a French chef. He was very happy with the quality of the food and that is high praise indeed. WEll done.
Great food and service - beautiful pub and will certainly go back and also recommend to friends
Popped in for lunch with my 7 month old daughter And Nana and Grandad... We were very well looked after! The service, food and ambience were perfect! My daughter was the only noise in the pub, when she was reminding Daddy that it was nearly nap time! Very Happy to see The Bell is back open and doing well! We’ll be back again, very soon! Many, Many Thanks to all The Bell Team, for making us feel so welcome and looking after us!
Outstanding food & service. We’ll be back next weekend. The lamb was amazing!
Absolutely amazing food! Cant wait to go there again!
A limited menu of superb, cleverly crafted and well presented food, whch caters very well for those on a gluten free diet
We chose from the main menu for lunch, rather than bar menu. Very small, nouvelle cuisine, portions although it was well presented and tasted excellent. Only the cheese board at the end, a mini ploughmans, sated the appetites of two of us. All the main course meals were tasty but the hake on mine was tiny and the burnt butter sauce made the potatoes very greasy.
We received a warm welcome, had excellent service and delicious food and wine. Our dog was made very welcome too. Would definitely recommend a visit.
