The Black Bull Inn, Moffat is an independently owned, award winning Scottish hostelry, established 1568. The oldest hostelry in the area, the Inn is well known for its links to Robert Burns, Scotland’s National Poet who visited during his heyday. The Black Bull is also connected to another notable character from history – the controversial Earl (Bonnie) of Dundee, who commandeered the Black Bull as HQ in the 17th century and oversaw the persecution of Scottish Presbyterians from within its walls.
With olde world ambience and atmosphere oozing out of its walls, the Black Bull is a welcoming, warm and interesting place to visit, with touches of traditional Scotland interwoven with contemporary twists and is everything an ancient Scottish hostelry should be. With great food, excellent wines, superb cask ales and beautifully styled rooms the inn never fails to charm both international and UK patrons and their pooches too.

First impressions were good. Polite staff, nice ambience. Lunch menu did offer much variety it was basically just a carvery for the main course with more options for starters and desserts. The Carvery was ok, nothing special. The beef tasted a bit weird. I was disappointed by how much the carvery was £19.95! I felt this was very over priced. Also a side portion of chips was £3.95 and it was a small portion. I looked on the website when I booked and their menu gave loads of options and didn’t mention the price of the carvery. When we were given the menu when we got there it was completely different from the one online. I wouldn’t have chosen to eat there if I knew how much the carvery was. Even though it wasn’t busy it took awhile for staff to serve us. Overall it was ok, the interior is nice and cosy that was probably the best bit for me.

We visited this pub on a weekend away with friends who had previously been for a meal and enjoyed. Pub and staff lovely I will say, however we had the carvery with pudding @ £22 per head, and it was not great to be honest. The meat wasn't too bad, but the vegetables, yorkshire pudding and stuffing balls very poor. The veg had obviously been stood for a very long time, had no flavour whatsoever. The Yorkshire puddings looked great but when you cut in to them we're pure stodge ! We were very disappointed. What a shame, as I say lovely pub and staff. Would go again for a drink, but doubt would have food.

The night we stayed the restaurant was fully booked so we got a table in the bar, the service was excellent and all the staff were very welcoming and friendly. The food was very good and I can highly recommend the ribs.

Food was nice, ambience good but service was really poor- over an hour before our lunches arrived, nobody came to check on us, had to flag down staff to take drinks orders… the serving staff themselves were lovely but I think totally understaffed so not their fault. Would have had a pudding but wasn’t offered a menu or another drink so got the bill and left. Hopefully just a one off/teething issues .

We had a long wait to be served. Portion control needs attention as one spit roast chicken was much smaller than the other. 2 of the desserts had to be sent back as they were cold. We stayed the night, the room was small and cold when we arrived. We were disappointed that they did not do breakfast.

We booked to sit in the bar part of the Black Bull as we had our dogs with us and it was a great spot. Cosy tables lit with candles and a friendly feel to the whole place was our first and lasting impression. We were really pleased with the menus, full veggie/vegan menu, as well as GF and a great normal menu for carnivores, too. A full wine list and cracking food. Would definitely recommend and go again.
