The Black Lion - Long Melford
We look forward to serving you soon.
Perfect atmosphere for a lunch with friends. Lovely food; beautifully presented. Male staff very friendly and our lunch experience was only let down by a miserable waitress.
Wow what a great place. Great setting, absolutely delicious supper, I had the roast cauliflower and steak.... just perfect. Welcoming staff, lovely atmosphere in the dining room. Will definitely go again.
Fantastic meal at the Black Lion. Very helpful staff and excellent food.
Sadly the Sunday lunch food was very underwhelming. The service ranged from excellent at times to awful. The dining room we were in needed a little TLC with torn wallpaper in places and the front step was damaged and an accident waiting to happen
Only one choice for vegetarians and come on Chef, mushroom risotto? Surely you can be more imaginative than that.
We opted for the 2 course menu and I must say the fish and chips was excellent, sadly the roast beef wasn't. Cold Yorkshire pudding, succulent beef but pretty tasteless, whole baby carrots with the black stem still in place, roast potatoes that tasted as if they had been kept warm for a long time and bland watery gravy.
We both opted for the bread and butter pudding for desert, one of our favourites. Maybe our taste, but no crispy buttery top, just a small slab of stodgy, but quite tasty pudding. I wonder if the custard was on top to hide the fact that it lacked the crispy top and it appeared just reheated? When I say reheated it was just warm, again this may be a personal taste but a hot desert should be hot.
Sadly although a fan of the Chestnut brand I'm afraid we won't be rushing back here for a Sunday lunch here.
Enjoyed another lovely lunch at the Black Lion! It has become a regular venue. We were very well looked after; the food was delicious and well presented. Situated in beautiful Long Melford! What's not to like!
Sunday lunch good food shame the service was light touch without much interaction. Waiter came to take our order but didn’t know what the soup of the day was. We were not asked how our food was. We had to signal to someone to get extra gravy. A little more attention and dialogue would be more welcoming.
Fabulous! Staff were lovely and good service. Food was beautifully presented and tasted great. Best meal I have had out for quite a while. I definitely recommend The Black Lion.
Very very good. Food and service was fantastic, couldn’t of asked for better. Will definitely be returning.
The vegetarian main dish was tiny, more like a starter, and I had to eat again after I left - a shame because everything else was perfect (and the meat eaters were very happy). Staff were great. A lovely place to have lunch overlooking the green.
Our meal was wonderful. Lovely atmosphere inside and welcoming staff. We chose the valentines set menu and every course was delicious.
Wine choice was good and well priced, so we found a rose'.
Would definitely recommend to others and will return for another special occasion.
Excellent food and service. An exceptionally good experience.
Beautiful food nice one chefs and service really good as well attentive but not intrusive
Food very nice, but you need side orders if you don’t wish to leave hungry, as veg are just miniature decoration.
Popped in for lunch, love this place for its lovely ambience and consistently good food.
Unfortunately the day we visited there were young children from a private school being given a xmas treat.
Out table was close to the internal door that was adjacent to the exterior door. Adults and children just kept leaving both doors open causing an icy blast of cold air. The menu was a special ( 2 or 3 courses for a fixed price) for that period, asked if this was the only menu and was told yes, however, when it came to order the dessert we were given a different menu and then they tried to charge on the new menu which was more expensive. A drinks order was wrong and they had to change one drink. Not impressed with the managements attitude.
Although the food was very good the service was far too slow. We arrived 30 minutes early for pre dinner drinks before our booked table time of 14.00. The restaurant was very busy with Sunday lunches but we had to ask for the menu after a wait of 40 minutes. Our main course arrived at about 15.45! Even the requested coffees were very slow in being served although many diners had finished their meals by then and left the restaurant.
At no time were sincere apologies made for the delay in service nor any offer of bread or nibbles to keep us going until the kitchen caught up.
Why did this restaurant take so many bookings if they were unable to provide a good service?
Such a shame as the food, when it arrived, was very good but we had lost enthusiasm for the meal so did not have a dessert.
It was overall a very good experience however, the food wasn't very hot, also the tables have grooves in them that were full of old food. One of my party is elderly and asked for a small portion but had a huge plate of food which put her off. My roast beef was excellent but not hot. The kids enjoyed their fish and chips. Although the beer is reasonably priced the wine was expensive at £17 for two glasses. The service was excellent and very friendly.
Good food, decent prices. Can’t ask for much more than that
Disappointing choices on the menu would not class it as a la carte. What we chose was very nice but I had to ask for an alternative to the menu choices.
Wonderful meal, fantastic food, great service and a lovely venue.
Having visited other chestnut group restaurants I knew what to expect but this is definitely my favourite. The black lion strikes a great balance between high quality food and service and a very nice relaxed and non stuffy ambiance.
Great locally sourced food, with a good mix of offerings. Good value and great service. We stayed at the Black lion and ate there for two nights and thoroughly enjoyed both meals and their breakfasts.
As always good food, service and atmosphere. Staff very polite friendly helpful and attentive. Highly recommended as best eating place in Long Melford.
First time here and really enjoyed ourselves. Short staffed on our Saturday night visit so service was a little slow. This didn’t worry us as the meal still went at a good gentle pace which suited us. Staff did warn us that they were short staff. This was the best thing to do and made a us aware of the situation. No problem. Anyhow, the meal was fab. Mixed meat platter to start which I could have had for main too! Homemade piccalilli was wonderful. Shepherd pie with lovely chunks of tender lamb and mustard mash was very good. Hubby had the pork chop and he really enjoyed it. Guess what! No room for pud but husband had one. Just had to sample it for myself and it was great. Wine selection was excellent with a good price range for everyone. All in all was a great meal, great staff and surroundings lovely. Will recommend this place to anyone.
We had such a wonderful experience. The food was exceptional, the staff attentive, friendly, smiley and very thoughtful. We were a table of three exhausted school mums who rarely get a chance to escape 'sans enfants ' - staff were so patient and thoughtful and not at all intrusive . Our plates were polished clean because it was genuinely beautifully cooked comforting delicious food. The ambience is 'oldy worldy' meets stylish stately home with calming lighting , a cosy setting and tables spaced apart well so you only hear your own party's conversation . Our dinner was at half seven and somehow time grew and before we knew it it was past 11pm. I am looking forward to returning and making it a regular haunt. Great value for money too. A total treasure .
A little disappointing. Quite a small menu unless you liked steak which I don't. I found the food fairly bland.
Last minute booking as we were staying nearby on arrival we were asked if we just wanted a drink or food... we said we had booked a table so we were offered a drink whilst we waited for our table... we sat down at a small table in front of the bar to enjoy our drinks... at this point we had no complaints, young man behind the bar was welcoming and friendly. 10 minutes passed and a lady brought a couple of Menus to us (again not a problem as assumed this was to speed up the process whilst we waited for our table to be ready). Orders taken and another person arrived at our table and put cutlery down ... we then enquired if we were remaining here to eat ? To which he replied ‘suppose so’ .... as we were sat by the bar where people were sat on stools just drinking we asked if we could then move to the back of the bar to obtain a little more privacy .... our white wine was plonked on our table table and left for us to pour ourselves .... our starters arrived my smoked haddock with poached egg was watery but edible, my husbands crab dish was ok but nothing special. Having finished our first course the waiter came to clear our plates and enquired if we would like to order dessert? When we replied that we had not yet had our main course he seemed indifferent (at this point I would mention he appeared to maybe have a cold as his constant sniffing was unpleasant and affected his ability to speak clearly!) .... main course arrived shepherds pie (lamb) it was hot which was good but lacked flavour .... at this point we decided we would not move to desserts albeit when our plates were cleared no one actually asked us if we wanted one.... in all a very disappointing experience ... it may well have been because we booked last minute but we felt our custom was not really wanted and there was no customer service. Certainly won’t be returning.
Very good Innovative food and service. Attractive restaurant in lovely location.
very slow service. food average. expensive for what it was
We enjoyed a delicious meal, my friend is a severe coeliac. And staff went above and beyond!!
Enjoyed our meal with friends on a Sunday evening, set menu, very good value service very good, will definitely be back.
Great place and staff. Would highly recommend. The food was great and the atmosphere good, the staff were very attentive. It was a nice experience and will be back to enjoy a nice meal again
Wonderful Rib on the Bone Steak 🥩 great service. We will return
Great location, great food especially Sunday Lunch with plenty of choice.
Booked for Sunday lunch, great setting and fabulous building. recently renovated. Didn't realise when booking for Sunday lunch I had booked the bar area, which was rather noisy. Our table was in the middle of the room but there was a lot of people traffic and wiater/ess movement around. Lovely starters, mains were ok, meat was on the tough side but the veg were lovely. Great coffee too. The Sunday roast beef just let it down.
Terrible terrible service. Food was lovely and the location beautiful. Many flies around was a bit of a pain but the service was by far the worst I’ve had in a long time.
Our table was not ready when we arrived at the time we booked however no matter we had a drink in the lounge.
Far too much ice in our gin & tonics which watered them down.
Food was very nice.
Waitresses very polite however front of house lady far too familiar also stood over me waiting for payment.
Great Pub with great food in a beautiful spot ... highly recommend The Black Lion
We had a lovely Sunday lunch here and the food was excellent. The wine was good but quite expensive. Service was a little too efficient as they cleared up the moment we put our cutlery down and although they didn’t rush us, we did feel a little rushed. Definitely will go here again because the food was really very good.
