Amazing team, dog friendly and made us feel very welcome. Good was amazing! Do feel that the place is quite large with the outside and maybe could do with more
Amazing food amazing service beautiful place. Loved the outdoor entertainment
Ended up booking a table here after passing by the other week and glancing at the menu on display - seemed pretty good, so we booked for our anniversary.
Upon entry we were greeted by a very friendly and professional front-of-house staff member, who took us through in to the restaurant side of building. The decor is modern with wonderful artwork of various recognisable land marks from the city centre, assumedly drawn by local artists. The floor-to-ceiling glass windows give a nice view in to a welcoming looking beer garden with a surprising amount of space.
The two girls who were waiting on our table the evening of were fantastic with great knowledge of the menu. We had one slight wobble with a slightly underdone steak but this was rectified ASAP with a freshly done medium rare cooked to perfection.
Hats off to the chefs too - flavour and presentation is up there with the likes of the Ivy.
We also flagged our visit on our initial booking as Anniversary - we received a congratulations from all staff we came in contact with and even recieved a complimentary treat for the occasion too!
All in all highly recommend and will be visiting again very soon. Still yet to explore the bar/pub side!
Brilliant visit to The Black Friar. Both food and service was amazing - I would highly recommend the chocolate fondant!
We will definitely be back!
Attended for Sunday lunch. Had the beef. Nice size portion. Not the cheapest meal but delicious none the less. Staff were attentive and apologetic when a dessert we ordered became unavailable.
Noise levels seemed quite high, but didn't detract from the visit.
Disappointed with my second visit. Came two hours later than my first visit, was sat in the restaurant section and asked to be moved to the pub section due to a preference in menu. On placing our order we were advised that the grazing menu had stopped. Three of our party of four ordered fish and chips and were unable to have any bread with their meal.
We specified that this was for a wedding anniversary which wasn’t acknowledged as we didn’t receive a happy anniversary wish from staff. A well known individual arrived approx 30 minutes after our party and it was clear the attention was on that individual rather than other tables.
Food was good, but the sparkle of first visit was lost this time.
The place itself is outstanding and the service was very good. Unfortunately, the lunchtime menu is poor with not enough choices, the chef was not flexible in what he would cook so we stuck with the menu, had fish and chips and it was awful.
I would recommend to a friend but with forewarning about the food issues.
Sunday Lunch for 4. Quite pricey but absolutely fantastic. Great gardens and a very nice atmosphere inside too.
Great food and vibes! Great place for a Friday night dinner! I’ll be booking again soon!
Have previously eaten in the bar and wasn’t impressed with the limited menu and poor food (due to covid staff shortages) but then we decided to give the restaurant a try. Very nice menu - it was hard to choose my order as everything sounded great. Really enjoyed the food and good wines by the glass. Staff were great - very friendly and professional. The venue has been beautifully designed and restored. It’s not the cheapest meal in town but well worth it in my opinion. It’s also not full of poser IGers….yet!
The whole experience was fabulous, amazing food, immaculately clean, friendly staff especially our waiter Matt. He is fabulous and we will definitely be back
From entering the restaurant to leaving the restaurant everything was perfect. From ordering the drinks to ordering deserts was really straightforward and easy. Staff were very friendly helpful knowledgeable and very polite.
The sanctuary room was just the best! A great way to host a private dinner.
My friend was running a little late, this wasn’t a problem, I was quickly greeted by my server who was friendly and approachable. My friend arrived and the server was able to recommend suitable choices for vegetarian/pregnant people. Food came quickly and was absolutely delicious, very flavoursome and portions were spot on. Our server was attentive throughout. The setting was beautiful, bright and full of natural sunlight. Furniture was really nice, and suited the vibe of the restaurant.
Lovely meal overall.
The meal was superb, really good portions and excellent service will 100% be booking again very soon
the food was very good and they had lots of choices of menu. the staff were very pleasant and helpful and we would be happy to go again.
The restaurant itself is finished to a good standard however the quality of ingredients used for the a la carte menu were not good considering the price. Artisan bread served in a hessian bag which meant the bread was covered in loose threads when taken out. £32 ribeye steak was poor quality meat. Fish was over cooked and dry.
Creme brûlée was lovely however it didn’t redeem the disappointment of what came prior.
The pub menu looked significantly better and much cheaper.
Staff were nice however seemed inexperienced which doesn’t really work when charging top prices.
WE DIDNT HAVE FOOD BUT NOT TEMPTED BY THE EXPENSIVE MENU TO BE HONEST. GREAT PLACE FOR A COCKTAIL AND CHILL IN THE BEUTIFUL GARDEN. GREAT DJ. GREAT AMBIENCE. GREAT SERVICE
Nice place, nice food but £££
Not a big menu
Great service from the girls
Staff were very friendly. The croquettes unfortunately were not croquettes just very dry deep fried pieces of shredded pork. My friend had the mac and cheese bites which were also quite overcooked. I then ordered the prawns which were lovely! However my friends main of risotto was undercooked and not tasty. My main of fish and chips was nice. I get the impression the pub food may be the way to go as 3 different menus maybe resulting in these errors. I would come again once the place has settled in but my friend would not.
Great so lovely the staff were friendly, food was great and catered to children.
Overall we enjoyed our trip to the Black Friars and I would visit again for drinks and a light snack (side dishes). We visited on a Sunday afternoon around 3pm, first opting for a drink in the beer garden then dinner in the dining room. They didn't seem short of staff but the service would say otherwise. We were waiting a while to order our first drink which only arrived as we were ready to move inside for dinner. Our food order was taken more quickly but then we were waiting for some time for our food to arrive, we order two roast dinners and the butternut squash risotto. All arrived cold, the roast dinners more so than the risotto, however after reporting this to our server the dishes were removed and new meals were prepared for all of us. These were all hot and very tasty. Then a member of our party ordered a dessert - the chocolate fondant which arrived burnt but edible which we also feedback to the server. When we paid we were told that a bottle of wine that we ordered and the dessert was on the house, which made up somewhat for our experience. I hope this is only teething errors as the pub only opened recently. The interior of the pub and outdoor area are lovely and as I said early I will probably return for drinks but I'd wait a while before I sample food again.
Everything about the experience was 5 star.
Food was unbelievable the restaurant itself was definitely one of the nicest places Iv eaten I will definitely become a regular!
Really nice outing for Sunday service. Super delicious food and good atmosphere. Friendly staff and had a wonderful time. Loved the décor and open kitchen view. Will definitely be going back!
Excellent Sunday Lunch in a great venue and although the full menu was not available there was still a good choice. On the strength of this visit we would certainly recommend The Black Friar and we are already looking forward to trying the full al a carte menu when available.
The food was delicious!
The olives and bread ordered as a starter were somewhat overpriced.
Great decor and service.
Great experience, we were served by Matt who was absolutely brilliant. Overall it’s a beautiful venue fit for every occasion
The only draw back is if you have allergies to gluten/wheat/malt etc (coeliac basically) there’s almost nothing you can eat besides the risotto.
Otherwise for normal people, it’s a 10/10 for sure
Food was amazing but ‘ambience’ was odd as the ‘bar area’ was packed and full of young people with a live DJ set pumping out music very loudly. The toilet facilities were fine for ‘a ‘restaurant’ but inadequate for a packed bar where the girls spent most of the night in front of the mirrors - it took me 20 mins to visit the toilet and my dinner was cold by the time I got back to the table. I don’t have a problem with loud and lively bars but The Blackfriars needs to decide if it wants to be a gastro destination or a bar - we spent £300 between 4 of us and the food was definitely worth it but the other elements put us off going back. It also stops serving drinks at 10.30pm and closes at 11pm, which is odd for a ‘city centre destination’ restaurant and one that accepts dining reservations up to 9pm?
Excellent and faultless ( though verging on pricey being similar to some top restaurants)
Everything was excellent and our server Mateo was exceptional by any standards. He got the balance right between friendly and efficient and was knowledgeable and helpful.
Food well presented and decor was tasteful and attractive
An absolute fantastic experience, service was above and beyond and food quality and as mouth watering.
Will definitely be returning.
Delish pie, pastry perfect. Attentive service. Lovely Marlborough Sauvignon. Decor beautiful. Will definitely return.
Excellent food & wine, very limited menu which we knew about beforehand (got a call to explain), the wine was so nice and good value. One minor gripe, little over attentive staff, I know it’s very hard to get the balance right but a friend and I were meeting after not seeing each other for so long and tbh we were interrupted too much.
Would definitely go back when the full menu is on.
First time visiting blackfrais and I will definitely be going back.
This is must ...try it!!
Great service in beautiful surroundings, staff were attentive , cocktails were great
Absolutely amazing food and the service was second to none. All the staff were friendly and couldn't do enough for us.
The feel of the pub was relaxed and the garden is simply breathtaking.
Beautiful decor, staff were very smart and helpful, food was amazing
Fantastic interior and courtyard. Pub area looks cosy, restaurant very stylish. Fish & chips were the best we've ever tasted. Lovely staff.
Lovely food and great service! Got such a lovely vibe to the place we’ll definitely be back
Friendly, exceptional service & something for everyone
I want to start by saying the staff were absolutely lovely and clearly doing their very best to cope with a full restaurant and I gather, not quite enough staff. The refurb is great and the ambience very pleasant. The choice of evening meals was fairly limited but I suppose what one expects with pub grub.
Unfortunately my pie was stone cold in the middle so had to be returned. Again I want to emphasise how very apologetic the staff were and since there were no more pies, I wasn't charged for my course. The burgers were fine although nothing special given that nowadays one can get some very fine specimens. My replacement risotto was tasty but could have done with some kind of little accompaniment on the side. Apparently the fish and chips were good although quite why restaurants are so mean with things like ketchup still amuses me. If people have a pile of chips, a miniature jam jar of ketchup is not going to be enough.
I want to go back but at the moment I feel they need to get their service speed (we waited ages for drinks) sorted out and their menu finessed. We have all had 18 months to hone our home-cooking skills so when we go out we expect some really good quality food and this is not quite there yet.
