The Boarding House
The original country hotel dates back to 1770 making this one of the oldest pubs in Renfrewshire, and keeping in the spirit of the original Howwood Inn, which boasted two bars serving a wide range of whiskies and ales. Our modern Ale House continues the tradition with a vast selection of Whisky, Gins and Ales and our restaurant serves the finest locally sourced food making the Boarding House the true home of honest food.
Meals were well presented and prepared. Staff just lovely
I met a group of friends for lunch. My meal was very nice and well worth the money,The staff were very friendly and dealt with our requests well.
We arrived on Wednesday night to discover it was steak special night. Good choice for us. Steaks were cooked to perfection. Some additional veg would have added to the excellent meal.
Our spell of hot weather saw us dining on the patio. Plenty of shade for those who wanted it. We decided we didn’t want anything too heavy so opted for a couple of starters each. Nothing was a bother and service was good as usual
8 of us had a lovely lunch, the service was a little slow but as we were so many friends it was not too important. The food was excellent as usual and nicely presented. The coffee/cake deal is fantastic value and the cake can be taken home in a box if you've already eaten too much!
We had a wonderful afternoon catching up with friends. Food was fab & service was excellent. Never disappointed when I go there.
Great meal and service. My friends thoroughly enjoyed it and so did I, a big improvement on my last visit.
Food was good, and set lunch good value at £11.95 fir 2 courses, but have been a few times, staff friendly and nough, but time waiting for food is slow, especially as the place wasn't full to the brim. Don't want good thrown at you, but the time wait a bit much, almost an hour !
I have recommend this before but if I was to go on Saturdays food then no I would not.
Overall my wife and I had a lovely time at the boarding house it was our first time The only thing that we found off putting was the amount of meat on our plate but that is just us the next time we can tell the staff not to put as much on our plate apart from that the meal was very good overall
normally I love this restaurant and have been many times but my last visit was a bit disappointing. We were seated at a table near the open patio door and we were really cold. We asked to be moved and the table we were given was not much better . we were told that all the other tables were booked although they lay empty during our time there. also a couple walked in without a booking and were given one of the tables supposedly unavailable. as a regular visitor I was a bit annoyed especially as I was treating my 85 year old mother who couldn't wait to get home.
Food was excellent. Only minor criticism would be the lack of choices on dessert menu. We were all able to have something but it was limited. Considering the variety else where in menu that was a disappointment although no complaints on what we ordered.
Lovely meal here with friends. Very nice restaurant, we had a round table which was great for us to chat. Staff were great, we will be back here. :-)
Excellent value for money. Lovely food. Restaurant was busy
Thoroughly enjoyed our meals which arrived within a reasonable time and was hot. Restaurant was busy but waiting staff still attentive. I was able to take a sweet as a doggy bag (nice box actually).
We were there with a group of 12 and every person enjoyed their food. Not one complaint. We had three children in the group, one of which was very fussy eater. The restaurant provided us with food that was not on the menu for the child. Very good service and very friendly staff.
We were a group booking of 11 - the service was great and everyone had a lovely meal. It's a beautiful restaurant and we would definitely go back.
Great little spot we stumbled across... Been a few times now.
Great wifi connection, so easy to get online without having to hand out your granny's shoesize.
Lovely selection of food on the menu, great choices as always.
Good to see a great little place be so well supported by their community.
Excellent place, would highly recommend!
Food was excellent and well presented. It would be helpful to have more vegetarian and vegan choices on the menu. Portions were very generous and overall a lovely lunch with friends.
Fantastic restaurant, beautiful decor, great service and lovely food!
Will definitely return......
Once again we had a lovely lunch at the Boarding House. Pleasant waiters and great food. As I live in the village I love the fact that it's so handy and would advise anyone who is thinking about going to go.
I was there for a birthday meal which was delicious. My husband thoroughly enjoyed the Sunday carvery and my mum raved about the fish and chips which I have already sampled!Looking forward to returning very soon.
Have been here a handful of times and the food is great. Brought my family on Sunday for my Dad's birthday and the meals were all excellent. We were a bit disappointed when they did not have some of the desserts we wanted but the overall experience made up for this.
We have enjoyed the Sunday Roast the last three weeks great quality of food ,big portions.. excellent value for money..
My grandson and I had lunch at the Boarding house on Wednesday. It was our first visit. It was very nice. The staff were very friendly and chatty. Our meal was very good value. We both had three courses. There was plenty of it. My grandson had a Cajun chicken burger and I had Balmoral chicken, both were very good. We met an exceptionally nice local lady, who we chatted with. Would certainly recommend this venue.
The waiting staff were really friendly and went out of their way to help our friend who has Motor Neuron Disease.
We dine here quite regularly & have always had a great experience , however when we visited this time the service was really quite poor. Having to wait for prolonged periods of time for drinks & food & then not offered the menu to choose a dessert. We were dining early & the restaurant was not particularly busy either. Wouldn’t stop us returning as the food & service are normally second to none.
Been to the Howwood Inn in it's various guises over the years, even though it has lost its way in terms of a being a village pub, it is pleasant . Food was okay, little expensive for size of portions. Service could be improved, had to ask four times for water to be brought to the table. Night ended with a sour note as my jacket (£150) was taken from the coat stand in the middle of the restaurant, never to be seen again. Recommend keeping personal belongings close. Might go again on day.
Venue is lovely, but it was quite busy when we were there, so service was very slow. Staff were very pleasant and food was good, but a 45 min wait for our main course seems a bit long. Shame really as it puts me off going back. We eventually abandoned the idea of a dessert as nobody came back for our order having given us a menu, so that didn’t bode well. We could of course have chased up the very busy serving staff, but it was easier just to leave.
Went for dinner before a music gig up the stairs so it was early. Relatively quiet when we went in but it got busier evening progressed. Food was good, although you would probably struggle if ur vegetarian the were very few veggie options.
Tasty meal & generally a nice place.
As always, the food and service were excellent on our latest visit with friends, we all enjoyed our choices from the lunch menu and also the coffee and cake offer. We have booked for Sunday lunch with family next month
A very good meal in lovely surroundings, attentive staff. Very well priced.
Spent a lovely Mother's Day with my daughters, mother in law and grandsons. The food and service were as always exceptional.
Always dependable for a lovely meal, great service and a welcoming atmosphere
This was a rare treat that my husband and I found time to dine out together, and this was the perfect place to come to. I had been on one occasion for lunch on a friends recommendation and was delighted then so came back with my husband. The food was lovely, the quality and portion sizes excellent. The variety was great from standard favourites ( for those like my husband , difficult to please, who enjoy traditional food and not too fancy the steak and ale pie was perfect!) , to the more interesting but perfectly cooked and presented. (haggis fritters and mash starter with peppercorn sauce was fantastic) I am about to book to for our whole family (28 of us)to dine together for a special birthday and I there will be all ages, 4 yrs to 71 and I know there will be something to suit everyone and no-one will be disappointed! I booked on line then had unexpected visitors, had to change again on line, no problems and made most welcome on arrival. Wont break the bank either!
Ps. I don't usually do reviews but this couldn't be ignored!
Good experience, service was pleasant and food tasty
We had a lovely meal, but we weren't told when we booked that it was a set menu
for the Sunday. Would not go back on a Sunday as menu didn't suit everyone.
All in all it still was a very enjoyable meal.
Good food and lovely staff nice atmosphere lovely and warm on a cold night
Staff very friendly and helpful, food was amazing, definately go back very soon.
Had a great night at the Boarding House with friends. Experienced a wonderful meal together with excellent service. Thank you very much.
