The Boarding House has been in the Smith family for 12 years. In 2015 a major refurbishment was started, transforming the building into a modern, contemporary restaurant and ale house with expanded function facilities.

The original country hotel dates back to 1770 making this one of the oldest pubs in Renfrewshire, and keeping in the spirit of the original Howwood Inn, which boasted two bars serving a wide range of whiskies and ales. Our modern Ale House continues the tradition with a vast selection of Whisky, Gins and Ales and our restaurant serves the finest locally sourced food making the Boarding House the true home of honest food.

Didn’t take or offer to take our coats
Didn’t have any Sauvignon Blanca so ordered 2 glasses of Pinot grigio went to refresh or dirinks and was told no Pinot Grigio left either not what you come to expect from a restaurant poor and then they add the 2 exstra glass to my bill anyway not a happy customer

My father and I enjoyed an excellent 2-course lunch of tomato soup and fish goujons, washed down with a pint of IPA. Food and service were spot-on. The ambience is a massive improvement on it's former guise as the Howwood Inn. The restaurant has a very airy feel with various areas of light and shade. The finishes are sympathetic to the original building. There is apparently a different menus for weekends so will definitely be returning. Highly recommended.

Been here a few times & never been disappointed. Went for lunch this time and thought i was going to struggle eating healthy(on a strict diet) but I actually had several options available.
The restaurant quickly got busy which impacted on service but staff & food never disappoints.

Booked a table for 6 people for 2pm on a Sunday, not too busy, staff are all lovely, we ordered Sunday roast beef, lamb & duck and everyone enjoyed the food, however I’m not sure why there was raw courgette with it! The only issue was that we waited a long time for food to come out after ordering, and again with the wait for desserts.

Order was mixed up coming out to the table with resulted in a rare steak and a medium rare steak being mixed up . The sauce had already been poured onto the rare steak. The staff thought it was ok to take that steak scrape the sauce off sear more and give back out. We took it as we had been waiting 90 minuets for our main course. Paid full price for the meal. Nota satisfactory experience

Party of 10 at The Boarding House on a Saturday night. It was a very busy night for staff as the restaurant was fully booked but all our dinners and drinks came just as we asked for them. The staff were lovely, nothing too much trouble. And yes, it was a bit on the noisy side but that was only because there was a live band playing upstairs at a wedding reception... nothing I would complain about.

Normally go for lunch but thought would try dinner. The Meal was nice but the king prawn curry had more vegetables than king prawns, 4 King prawns in total was disappointing, management apologised and did not charge us for our coffee. Will stick to lunch in future.

The only criticism I have is of the lighting. Large, bright bulbs hanging down from the ceiling with no shade on, was far to bright to be comfortable. It was very distracting when I looked up from my plate to talk to my friend.
My daughter is light sensitive as she has severe migraine. She would have walked out as soon as she saw the lighting in the dining room, so i now know never to take her there.

8 of us had a lovely lunch, the service was a little slow but as we were so many friends it was not too important. The food was excellent as usual and nicely presented. The coffee/cake deal is fantastic value and the cake can be taken home in a box if you've already eaten too much!

Food was good, and set lunch good value at £11.95 fir 2 courses, but have been a few times, staff friendly and nough, but time waiting for food is slow, especially as the place wasn't full to the brim. Don't want good thrown at you, but the time wait a bit much, almost an hour !

normally I love this restaurant and have been many times but my last visit was a bit disappointing. We were seated at a table near the open patio door and we were really cold. We asked to be moved and the table we were given was not much better . we were told that all the other tables were booked although they lay empty during our time there. also a couple walked in without a booking and were given one of the tables supposedly unavailable. as a regular visitor I was a bit annoyed especially as I was treating my 85 year old mother who couldn't wait to get home.

Food was excellent. Only minor criticism would be the lack of choices on dessert menu. We were all able to have something but it was limited. Considering the variety else where in menu that was a disappointment although no complaints on what we ordered.
