The Boar’s Head
We serve a wide selection of dishes from formal dining to pub classics, using as much produce from the nearby Ripley Castle Estate & Gardens as possible. Our chefs are constantly inspired to create special dishes to take advantage of the 2000 acre Estate and extensive Walled gardens produce.
We serve a selection of popular local real ales and have guest beers on a regular basis including some rare gems, so there is always a reason to pop into the bar.
There is a well structured and varied wine list suitable for all levels of wine drinker from affordable afternoon drinking through to more powerful and exquisite wines, which can be matched to our dishes to create a full dining experience.
We cater for any number of guests from couples to larger parties and families and we have recently received 'Best Hotel for dogs in the UK'.
Excellent food, good value and staff were on the ball
Excellent food and value for money. Though would have preferred being in the dining room rather than the bar.
Pleasant welcome from staff. Service not rushed, nothing too much trouble. Food quality excellent and good value for money. Very enjoyable will recommend
Lovely village, lovely traditional restaurant and dining room, lovely roast beef dinner!
Booked a table for Sunday lunch as a birthday treat and expected to be seated in the restaurant, but we were seated at a small table for four in the bar area, which was full of people ordering drinks to take outside and dogs. The starters were very good, but the roast beef dinner was very bland and basic, asked for horseradish and was given one sachet for the three that had the beef. Also had to ask for steak knives as the beef was not as tender as it should have been, as farmers we know what is good and what is sub standard. I expected a better experience at a hotel that is in a lovely village.
Excellent food great pub, friendly and helpful staff.
We had a great table for six. They provided a requested round table. Food, ambience and overall atmosphere was great. We will definitely be back!
I have dined here before and the service has better. On this occasion, the food was ok (I could not taste the fish in the fish pie - only the sauce. Another in our party found the halloumi burger disappointing & difficult to eat but our two children enjoyed the fish and chips). The restaurant filled quickly up and it became difficult to attract the attention of the service team to order more drinks or a dessert, so we opted to pay and head across the road for |an ice cream instead. I like this place but find it hit and miss.
We ate in the dining room on a mid week evening so was a bit on the quiet side and lacked a bit of ambience. However the polite friendly staff more than made up for this and the food was excellent. Liver not over cooked and well presented on a hot plate and the bacon chop equally pleasing. Nicely chilled Chardonnay and a glass of Merlot good accompaniments at reasonable price.
Really enjoyed the whole experience, staff were great, nothing was too much trouble and the food was superb
We had a lovely 5 night break celebrating our Ruby 40th wedding anniversary..We didn’t know the village of Ripley existed until we booked the Boar’s head for our break ,it was so peaceful and quiet .We had a superb meal on our first night ,food fantastic staff and service first class ,we finished the night with a little tipple ,one of the best gin and tonics I’ve ever had and even better it was distilled on site Harrogate Tipple ,my new go to gin .We stayed in one if the coachmen rooms and it was fantastic ,the room service staff absolutely spoiled us by keeping the room first impression perfect every time we came back to our room . Will definitely come back to this gem of a hotel positioned in the perfect village of Ripley.
We had a wonderful time. We were there celebrating our 21st wedding anniversary. Everyone was so friendly, the atmosphere and the food were perfect. A very thoughtful touch was a 'Happy Anniversary' message on our desert plates. We shall return!!
We go to the Boar's Head frequently, at least once a week, and absolutely love it. The staff are great (especially George!) and the food is superb. It's also extremely good value for us as we have a 20% off, discount card. The rooms are lovely too. As we only live less than ten miles away, we don't stay often, but we have stayed there for special occasions. All in all it can't be faulted.
Very good menu and well cooked and presentedo. Would highly recommend
We had a very pleasant birthday meal at the Boar’s Head . The menu was very varied and although the meat was outstanding in quality the lack of vegetables spoilt the overall effect.
Excellent service nothing too much trouble food great invited friends down to meet us and they were also impressed. We were on holiday so had not been here before but could not fault it
Enjoyed the fish pie as before but the rose wine was disappointing and over-priced.
This is my third visit to the Boars Head and it never let's us down. Food was excellent and good value for money. I had sea bass which was to die for. Staff attentive and pleasant. Room was clean with a gorgeous comfy bed. Breakfast had a great choice.
Menu did not offer any fresh vegetables as a side. Queried with waiter who advised this was because the kitchen was too busy !!! Also calves liver was a very cheap cut and very fatty. Very disappointing overall
Excellent choice of cheeses and vintage port. No whitebait the night we were there, but that at least means the fish is delivered fresh.
Superb service from the team. Incredibly warm and friendly. Big portions of food particularly the starters. Think about sharing! Will definitely return
Service and food was of a reasonable standard, but the noise level from kids and adults meant is was not an enjoyable experience.
Returning customers, food was the usual very high standard and great value for money, staff were lovely and friendly as always. We had our dog with us and they made a great fuss of him and provided complimentary dog biscuits and a bowl of water, which we really appreciated, and Billy loved! Would definitely recommend and hope to return in the future.
Delicious kedgeree fish cake. Excellent service. A good experience.
We live close to Ripley in Harrogate - so this restaurant is one of our favorite places to visit as its not too far away - we can also get a 36 bus each way from Harrogate which drops us straight outside - how cool is that!
We’ve been here many times for a drink as were very local and enjoy walking to ripley and once for a sandwich a while ago. This visit I don’t know if new management has taken Over but Very rude and abrasive staff who all seemed to avoid serving anyone, especially the person who seemed as though he was duty manager. Didn’t even acknowledge me multiple times he came to the iPad to look at table arrangements and then when I asked him to check me in to say I was here for our table it was a problem. Said it would take 20-25 mins clear a table that had 3 plates and 2 napkins on because they have to serve food at the same time to an almost empty restaurant. Pretty sure everyone who works at restaurants has to manage that!! Seemed to be plenty of staff there but very few who seemed to want to do anything and we’re trying to make themselves look busy. Dining areas and meals in bar area completely empty. Weather good so lots of drinkers outside areas. Asked for certain accompaniments with our meal that never arrived. Food was luke warm, meat was tough, extremely measly portions of vegetables ie 5 green beans, 2 potatoes plus smash, 5/6 bits of carrot, 2 pieces of mooshy cauliflower cheese, not parsnips or anything else you would expect to have with a roast dinner. Every part of the meal very below average to anywhere else we have been in this area. fish pie seemingly made my family member poorly overnight. Table was sticky and place didn’t seem clean on the whole. Understand it was Easter weekend but no excuse for poor business manners and rudeness on arrival and just slovenly service. Will not eat there again.
I have already submitted a very favourable review but don't know if it was received. Good food, excellent service, good choice and sensible portion sizes - looking forward to our next visit.
Good food and great service - the starters were excellent (salmon parcel and whitebait).
Despite many wedding guests having a drink before the service we had a lovely meal with excellent service. Only blip was one coffee was cold but this was easily resolved. Charming waitress, huge beef sandwich, delicious glass of wine. Altogether an excellent experience.
Nice pub but it was very cold in there when we were eating and thought the food looked and sounded a lot better on the website than it was. Staff were great
Excellent surroundings. Attentive service. Fabulous food and delightful ambience. A definite return visit is called for! Thanks
A lovely location with good food and service. It's best to book a table
The food was good, not outstanding but good. Portions more than generous and prices were fair. When we arrived we were advised Restaurant was closed for a private party and given a table in the bar. Bar devoid of any atmosphere. Spoilt the experience. Service was fine. If you want to eat in restaurant ring venue and book. I booked online and hadn’t picked up the restaurant was closed.
We waited 20minutes and then went to get our own menus
Unfortunately there was a table of four rather drunk and very noisy we asked to be moved table as did others in the restaurant the staff did not report this to the management and when we spoke to the management they did nothing about it
Unfortunately this did spoil our evening we were given a small reduction on the bill which we accepted
On the upside the food was very good and the management were helpful with regards to where to park our motorhome
Hopefully if we are in the area again this would be a one off occurrence
My wife and I had a very enjoyable meal at the Boars head. The food was excellent from a varied menu and the service friendly attentive and efficient.
Had a lovely lunch the table was booked for four but we had an extra person and this was no trouble the staff were very helpful & friendly the food was delicious we all thoroughly enjoyed it . Definitely will be returning
Lovely food very attentive friendly staff would highly recommend
Excellent experience - and the best pint of Old Peculier in the area.
Really disappointed. Ive always loved the Boars Head but after taking my in-laws as a Christmas treat between Christmas and new year, we are unlikely to return. We asked to be seated in the restaurant rather than the bistro as it was a special occasion. Unfortunately there was no ambience whatsoever and we wished we’d stayed in the bistro where it was at least a bit cosier and friendlier.
The staff were unhelpful, and very disengaged with customers. The menu was poor with items swapped into meals without any warning, and poor stock of standard sauces. The food itself was average.
An overall poor experience, leaving us disappointed and unsatisfied, yet still spent up!
Such a shame as it was always such a special place.
A superb Sunday lunch (roast beef and seasonal vegetables) - helpful friendly staff and well-kept beer - the Boar's Head continues to set and maintain high standards, well-worth a visit and great value-for-money. The sticky toffee pudding rounded-off a wonderful experience.
