The Brasserie at Wivenhoe House Hotel
Amazing food let down by really poor service.
We had a lovely relaxing lunch. Food was lovely and we were made very welcome. If weather had been better we would have enjoyed a walk in the wonderful grounds. A lovely afternoon.
Faultless service and food. It was the attention to detail which made Wivenhoe House stand out.
The service here was fantastic, very friendly attentive waiters, making us feel very welcome. My husband and I both had the rib eye steak and it was cooked to perfection, we were very impressed! We would definitely come back and recommend to friends.
All four of us throughly enjoyed our time; the food, the staff and the location was perfect!
An excellent Sunday lunch in superb location. Friendly and attentive staff make even better.
Great effort from waiting staff. Special attention to our event (anniversary) led us to a confetti decorated table and a complimentary desert with a chocolate iced message. Terrific touch.
If I have to be critical, Mojitos needed more sugar and mint. Timings on food delivery could have been more thoughtful. Ie. Initial cocktails served with one of the starters and whilst prompt service is good, 5 Mins to get settled with the drinks would have been my preference. In fairness we could have more prescriptive and then I am sure all would have been well.
Other than that all good really.
Not everyone dresses up to go there so don't overdo your attire but on the whole food was good and great value.
Didn’t get our first drinks until our starter arrived. My main course was burnt on the bottom and so over cooked I couldn’t cut into it. Waitress was very friendly and professional. Main building is lovely. Brassiere a little lacking in atmosphere.
Excellent lunch following daughter's graduation. We sat in the beautiful garden. Waiter was charming and provided great service (law student who had just graduated). The chef also provided a plate saying congratulations in chocolate which was a nice touch. Great also to see the establishment taking allergies seriously as my daughter has an egg allergy. Thank you for a lovely experience.
The portions were more than ample they were well presented and tasty.
The staff were very attentive.
I would recommend this restaurant and go back.
This was our first time at The Brasserie and went to fish Friday and we were impressed with the buffet selection - could go up for seconds. The mains were lovely but a bit of a disappointment following the buffet. The pan fried trout was good but the fried calamari was too greasy as were the fried sweet potatoes which was a shame. The desserts were fabulous - so would have happily just had the buffet and dessert. The service was outstanding - the air condition was set a tad high and in fact would have preferred to sit outside but did not realise it was an option until we left so next time. We have already decided to return but next time just for the restaurant as something different but will go again to Fish Friday but later in year. I thought it was good value for what was available and what we ate.
We were very disappointed with our visit, to the Brasseries at Wivenhoe.
I had booked the table for 5.30pm as we were going to a Lecture on Campus, which started at 7.30pm. We were not shown to our table before 6.00pm "as they were not ready". So our meal was rushed down as we did not want to be late for the Lecture.
It was Fish Friday, and according to the menu online it stated that the Buffet Starters would include things such as king prawns, and other fish starters.
There were no king prawns and the bowl of prawns that was there looked like it had just been defrosted and plonked into a bowl. Very un-appetizing. the other offerings were very bland and tasteless. There were no, what i would called "Starters", just bowls of un-appetizing, un-appealing bowls of shellfish.
My main course was advertised as Dressed Crab with green beans and new potato salad. So i ordered sweet potato fries to go with it. Imagine my upset when the 'potato salad' turned out to be 8 Boiled Potatoes!! The crabmeat was very dry and there was no dressing/lemon or anything to spruce it up a bit!
All in all, a very disappointing waste of £80!
I would not recommend to anyone else in my family.
Although, the staff there were excellent and very friendly and attentive.
Amazing place and food. Wine is also fantastic. I think the best element of this place is the staff, service was impeccable.
Anniversary meal, we loved the food, the people and the place 👍👏👍
A friendly location where people pay attention and try hard. The place itself was attractve, the food good and the wine very reasonable. It was however very strange to have to tvs on in the restaurant.
On my booking, i added that 1 of my party (me) is on slimming world. When we arrived, it had already been noted and, as it was a sunday, i was advised that the sunday roast potatoes are cooked in oil, the veg has butter and to accommodate, the chef offered me new potatoes instead, no butter on the veg and separated my gravy for me. That made me feel really at ease. We had a great meal (had beef roast - was delish!!), great service ( esp from the sommelier ) and a great time. Will be going back!!!
Very enjoyable Sunday lunch catching up with old with friends. Enjoyed sitting in lounge area drinking cocktails pre dinner.
We were at our table for over 2 hours and did not feel rushed. The food was excellent as was the service. The house wine was very good and amazing value for money. Overall we had a great dining experience and will definitely return.
Fish Friday was excellent - so much choice and generous portions. Staff very efficient and professional.
Had a very enjoyable evening at the Wivenhoe House restaurant. The service was friendly and the food was wonderful. Well done!
We ordered fish and chips - it was very poor quality - fish was hardly in existence and the chunky chips were not cooked - the second portion given was no better .
I have been to this brasserie on a number of occasions with favourable results .
This last time was going to a different place .
Even the ice cream served up in three flavours was not what it should have been - no smoothness just a chunk which fell apart
So disappointing for me and my guest !
Super Lunch Club menu, very reasonable, three courses plus coffee. Nice atmosphere, very good service. All in all very good, recommending.
This was our first visit. The quality nd presentation of the food were excellent. The standard of services was amazing. All in all a great experience and something we will do again
Thoroughly enjoyed the food, atmosphere was great and staff excellent.
After pleasant welcome it went downhill service very slow and unfortunately after a main course of king prawns my wife and I were extremely ill next day. Staff were pleasant and courteous. There was also a wedding reception on which may have had a bearing on the slow service.
Lovely location and good range of choices. Very helpful and attentive staff. Many thanks to Lionel who looked after us so well and thoughtfully
Really friendly and excellent service. A pleasure to visit
My table had to wait over one hour between the starter and the main course (the starters took 30 minutes to arrive). My main course was nearly cold and salt pot must have been emptied on the meal. The food was generally mediocre to poor. Not recommended.A pity as the venue is good.
This is part of Essex University and you can phone and ask for a table d'hote student prepared menu if you phone up. We tried to do so but our wishes were not understood. Nonetheless we had the a la carte menu which was very good. The ambience is superb and it is not often that you dine in a house which is the subject of a Constable painting. The views are superb and it is very comfortable
Lionel was as amazing as always. Lovely atmosphere.
The setting is great. Most of the meals that we ordered were not exactly what we asked for, eg. the meal ordered with chunky chips came with skinny chips and the caesar ordered without chicken came with chicken. It wasn't a problem but would expect greater attention to detail.
Four of us went for Sundy lunch. We had a lovely meal. Good friendly service. Unfortunately the poor waitress spilt a tray of drinks over my wife. Apart from that it was very good.
Went out as a family for Sunday dinner and thoroughly enjoyed everything about our dining experience.
Food was very good and the service excellent. I would recommend.
Absolutely love coming to Wivenhoe House , I am never disappointed.
Stunning venue with good local/seasonal food that is perfect for a posh Sunday Lunch
Basically we turned up on a Friday to find that “fish Friday” was a £40 a head set menu 😩 We didn’t have time to go anywhere else so basically ended up paying £180 for dinner for 4 when all we wanted was a light dinner. The food was fine but incredibly overpriced for what it was. Fish (sea bass and fish cake) were dry... we have not been to the WH Brasserie for a few years and I’d be skeptical about just turning up on spec again in case there was some other high priced set menu with no other choice. Actually wished we had walked out and gone elsewhere but we were up against the clock. Really disappointing overall although when the waiter wasn’t flirting with the other staff the service was friendly and pretty good!!
Very nice reasonably priced cocktails, beef lovely but poor portions of meat, 3 tiny thin slices of beef with 4 giant roast potatoes to fill the plate and an under cooked parsnip, Yorkshire pudding was lovely! Staff were great and couldn't do enough to help so thank you, I would go back but order something different.
Mother’s Day Sunday lunch was lovely, roast beef especially
It was a very quiet sitting on the Friday night we were there - possibly due to a large wedding being catered for - but you wouldn't have known about it in the restaurant.
The staff were all lovely - maybe a bit too attentive but do appreciate it was quiet in the restaurant. Only downside on food - we order a side of carrots and already had carrots with our mains. But literally that's all we can grumble about. Great value and some lovely food! Would definitely go back!
A wonderful dinner was had with our Canadian relatives and they were very impressed with the ambience of the place the standard of food and particularly the friendliness and efficiency of the staff.
