The Butchers Arms
Our 16th century Public House is situated on Lime Street in the parish of Eldersfield near Gloucester.
The Butchers Arms is first and foremost a rural pub, where the bar is the hub of life, with low ceilings, wooden floors, roaring fires and real ale served straight from the cask.
The food is British and we source only the finest ingredients from local suppliers. The menu constantly changes according to what is in season.
Please note that as it is a small pub and we are unable to cater for children under the age of 10.
We (mostly) enjoyed our lunch at the Butchers Arms. The food was excellent and the staff helpful. The only fly in the ointment was a group of noisy fellow diners that made conversation difficult - not really the pub's fault. Consequently, I would definitely recommend the Butchers Arms.
Great meal. Very good value and excellent food. Charming place which hasn’t been spoiled or tatted up beyond recognition. Great service by the owners.
This was my first time at the Butchers Arms (one of my guest had been there 35 years earlier it has changed) we thought it a lovely pub and outstanding restaurant
we would recommend the meals as exceptional.
The staff were very welcoming, efficient and friendly
I would recommend the Butchers Arms as a place to take friends and colleagues for a cracking meal
From start to finish our 'special' evening could not be faulted which is a tribute to both the front of house staff and to those 'out the back' who prepared a wonderful dinner for us to celebrate the occassion' and simple but discreet table decoration being indicative of the attention to detail. Yes this is real country pub with good beer and an interesting array of wines. Although you eat in the open bar area the buzz about the place was atmospheric the service was impeccable and the food a tremendous accolade to those who presented a variety of interesting and very well sourced ingredients into plates of sublime yumminess. Would we go back? you bet we will. It would be churlish to single out any individual for praise because it is clear the emphasis as we have said is making each 'customer' feel special so yes, highly recommended with our thanks for making a special event even more memorable.
Friendly helpful staff, fantastic food. Not the easiest place to find but we’ll worth the effort.
They now do a set menu at £25 per head for 3 courses of delicious locally sourced seasonal dishes, catering for allergies if told when booking. Worth booking in advance as limited tables
A review of their one star status is overdue, star should be removed immediately! Unimaginative menu and VERY plain cooking, no seasoning, very bland. Was it chef's day off? Grossly overpriced for what was 2nd rate pub food. Was very noisy as there was a large party in the small bar where we were seated which should have been in the designated dining room at the rear. Used to eat there fairly regularly under the previous owners but shan't be going back.
Dear Mr Steen, Thank you for your review. We are very sorry you did not enjoy your meal. First off we do not have a Michelin Star. We are listed in the Michelin guide, which we are very proud of. At the end of each meal we ask if people enjoyed their food and their experience at the pub. I wish that you had voiced your opinion when asked. Admittedly just before Christmas it is always very busy, so apologies if you found it too noisy. We wish you a Happy New Year. Jo-Anne Block Owner
Superb in every way. Really enjoyable lunch. Good value and friendly staff. Can’t wait to go back
Thank you Paul.
We had a fantastic night out, i would highly recommend
Thank you Guy.
Our usual treat 3 - 4 times a year to enjoy the amazing food just down the road from us. We love the seasonal menu so rarely eat the same meal twice unless of course it is so delicious it deserves being repeated. Would highly recommend.
Its was our second visit and the meal lived up to our expectation we shall dine again some time soon
Thank you Bobby.
Had a fantastic dinner with friends and would recommend it as a great place to visit for good food plus service.
Thank you Ross.
Six of us went out for a part working lunch. All six of us commented about the quality of the food. Beautifully cooked food. Staff too were delightful. We shall be back for office Christmas meal in three weeks. Looking forward to it.
The Butchers Arms is a lovely place, comfortable and decorated with great style.
We’ve eaten at the butchers arms several times and every time the meal and service has been fantastic.
Fantastic setting for a special family meal. Attentive service, beautiful food and their attention to detail was second to none. Made to feel very welcome and great special touches for my mums birthday.
Fantastic food and service! Thank so much and we will be back soon.
Lovely food and great service. Really cosy and the food surpassed expectations.
Great lunch, friendly service.
Don’t let the floods stop you getting there!
Wonderful food, lovely staff, nice atmosphere never disappoints
Very friendly and attentive service. Food interesting and well presented
We had a wonderful meal for my sons 21st birthday. We chose four different starters and mains from the menu and all were absolutely delicious. These were followed by a beautifully rich Chocolate Ganache with honeycomb and cherries.mmmm. This is a very warm and welcoming pub with amazing food accompanied by very friendly staff and wonderful service. Can't wait for our next visit.
Beautiful location, building and interior. Couldn’t have wished for a more friendly and welcoming atmosphere. A perfect mix of professional yet thoroughly warm and genial. Lovely food and wine. Just wish it was closer to home, although absolutely well worth the journey. Can’t fault.
Food was delicious! Staff really friendly and lovely too, and what an amazing building. Only thing I would say is that there was no music at all and we found ourselves almost whispering at points. Would definitely go back though!
Our first visit to The Butchers Arms and we were delighted. The staff that were on that particular evening were fantastic, a great asset to the place, friendly, full of smiles, and just the right amount of chat to make it all very relaxing. Food was superb, I had the duck and my partner the hake, cooked beautifully. Lovely fires on a very dismal evening and candles, the atmosphere was perfect. We shall definitely go back, it is probably about an hours drive away, and certainly worth it.
This is the first time that I’ve eaten here with these new owners, and the food was much much better than with the previous ones. The place is far more welcoming now, but it’s far too expensive for what it is.
We had been to the Butchers Arms on several occasions in the past before it changed hands and had always thoroughly enjoyed our meal. This was the first time we had been back since the change of ownership and we were a little disappointed. The welcome and service was lovely, however the food felt a little confused and at times lacked attention to detail.
The mains in particular were disappointing, with a steak that although perfectly cooked, was served lukewarm and had little extra on the dish to add interest. The lamb again was beautifully cooked but my husband found the accompanying barley and pomegranate salad jarred with the meat and the whole dish was served in a bowl, making it awkward to tackle the lamb cutlet.
For desert we had the sticky toffee pudding, in essence a square of sponge with sauce pooled around the plate and a blob of ice cream. Again, perfectly edible but for a restaurant that proudly touts it’s entries in the good food guide and the Michelin guide, it felt profoundly average.
First visit with the new hosts in charge and we were not disappointed. Excellent menu choices, superb food and great service. Highly recommended.
The food and service was perfect the interior is full of character
Had a lovely night food was delightful, service excellent and we will return soon. Thank you
Warm welcome, service and food was outstanding. I had the beef steak, which was cooked exactly as requested and beautifully tender and my partner said the venison was the best that she had ever had.
Really love coming here. The warm welcome. The fabulous food. The amazing service. Definitely one of my favourites. Thank you
Excellent and original food, prompt and friendly service in a charmingly rustic setting.
First class food, great service, lovely choice of wines (some very nice inexpensive gems there), nice, if loud, ambience, excellent range of options in both prix fixé and a la Carte menus. Reasonable pricing too. What’s not to like?!
Exceptionally warm service, fantastic food and knowledgeable advice. Thank you for a lovely meal.
My wife and I were staying overnight in Cheltenham (Thursday 26 September 2019) and were looking for something special for dinner. Well, we certainly found that at The Butchers Arms. What amazing experience. On arrival the property looked beautiful and inviting. Inside, we had a very friendly welcome. The menu was perfectly balanced and the food was outstanding. We cannot recommend The Butchers Arms highly enough.
Great food, service. Little noisy at peak. London standard cooking in countryside
I would recommend and would visit again.
Happy smiling faces, quaint and cosy half timbered building and fantastic food - nothing else required for a perfect evening. Thank you to all.
Outstanding service, starting with a wonderful welcome. Have eaten here myriad times previously, however this time the quality of food was not even close to the other occasions.
