Excellent choice of dishes. Relaxing ambience. Didn't feel hurried at all. Presentation of dishes was exceptional. We had the pre-theatre menu which was just perfect.

This was the first time my wife and I visited The Crescent Hotel in Buxton. We had booked a meal in the evening in the main restaurant. I ordered Sirloin Steak and my wife ordered Sea-bass. My meal which consisted of chips, a whole tomato and half a mushroom was cold and I returned my meal. The waiter said he would ask the chef to re cook a fresh steak. When he returned it was the same steak and it felt very much like it had been microwaved. My wife ordered Sea-bass and was expecting two halves of Sea-bass , one over the other. instead she had a whole Sea-bass including skin and bones, a portion of sand fire and a few new potatoes. She ask the waiter to ask the chef to remove the bone which he did but left the skin on the fish. The last thing you need is to be operating on a fish to remove skin and bone leaving your plate like a disaster zone. The presentation was nothing like a five star hotel standard and I would suggest the chef is retrained in how to present food as well as cooking it, it lacked total finesse.

We had the pre-theatre menu and it was just right for an early meal. Service moved us on smoothly so we didn’t feel rushed before going on to the theatre.

We booked the pre-theatre menu and service was slow despite the restaurant being more than half empty. The staff were polite and did apologise for the wait however we were seated at 5pm and after an hour had only received one starter. Another table of four seated after us had received their starters and mains within that time. The food was bland. The experience was nothing special, the food was relatively mediocre with more focus on presentation than taste and overall very overpriced.

For a restaurant in a flash hotel, the Crescent was average. Nothing stands out as dreadful, but nor was it excellent. One good point was the option to have an English sparkling wine at a reasonable price, albeit only by the bottle. They don't sell that much of it, according to the server. (Per glass options were, from memory – they don't post the wine list on line – champagne or the usual ubiquitous Prosecco.) Maybe that's a northern thing. "Darn sarf"smart restaurants and even some pubs over a handful of English options. There is even a Derbyshire winemaker they could have stocked. Reasonable by the glass wine options, but no pairing suggestions. A nice Chateau Musar. Claimed to be coravin, but the server had a hard time getting into the bottle. Interesting menu but hardly adventurous. The chef's idea of venison carpaccio wasn't what you'd expect. More cooked than cured. But tasty, albeit pricey and surprisingly small portion size, more in keeping with a tasting menu than a three course meal. The twice baked cheese souffle was another chef's take on a dish that might surprise anyone who has had the same thing at Cote, for example. Hake with chorizo cassoulet was more like it. Herdwick mutton was off the menu, with no lamb alternative. Ribeye steak was much like a ribeye steak anywhere. I should have insisted on getting it as rare as it can come rather than on the medium side that arrived. Rhubarb terrine was fine, but straight out of the fridge. Frozen custard was a nice twist. Service was in the hands of mostly young locals. Friendly and capable, but "self service" on the wine pouring front. All in all, what you might expect from a mid-rank hotel, but with al la carte prices that matched more accomplished dining rooms. Then again, Buxton is a dining puzzle. Been going there for more than 20 years and have yet to find great food. Mostly northern (large) portions of competent rather than inspiring cooking. The Crescent just fits that pattern.

Food quality good. Waited ages to be served for my dessert. Had to leave the restaurant early for an appointment. I was staying at the hotel too. Reception uninterested in my complaint and at no point made any effort to makes amends. Sent me a WhatsApp message on 18 July saying Food and Beverage Manager would be in touch. As at 17 August not heard anything. Poor from a 5 star masquerading hotel with 1 star service. Absolutely dreadful.

Overall good but could be better. We were forgotten about. Arrived at 4pm but no food came until after 5pm and we had to ask what had happened to our order. We were compensated with Prosecco. The bread on the sandwiches was a little dry and there could have been more generous fillings. No savoury quiches nor pies. The scones were very good. The staff were friendly.

The service was exceptional and the staff were helpful, friendly yet professional. We could not fault them. The food was ok but expensive and a little bland. The salad was disappointing as some leaves with a dressing for £7.00 is disappointing and lacking any flair. Not 5 star. The cheese course was lacking in choice or description of preferences. Would have been nice to know which local cheeses were available especially as Hartimgton cheeses are exceptional and local to the area. The Parmesan and truffle fries were amazing but cheaper than the salad leaves. Makes little sense! There only seemed to be a wine list, not a full drinks list, which I would expect, however the wine was perfectly chilled, reasonably priced and good quality. The ambiance of the dining room was relaxing and opulent. I found the “pass” front of house unnecessary and in my view unprofessional. On the whole for a £180.00 meal, I would have expected a lot more, a memorable meal, but was lacking in a good few areas. We have dined in some exceptional restaurants and this did not have the wow factor. The staff, to their credit were amazing but we chose to eat out for the rest of our stay.
