The Catherine Wheel
A village pub with real ales, great food and accommodation near Bath
The Catherine Wheel is a 17th century country pub in the historic conservation village of Marshfield. It’s just eight miles north of the Roman city of Bath (a World Heritage site) and 13 miles from the port of Bristol, named European Green Capital 2015.
Marshfield stands close to where three county borders meet at Gloucestershire, Wiltshire and Somerset. This is at the southern gateway to the rolling Cotswold hills which is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
Our chefs are highly regarded for creating wholesome, freshly-prepared dishes, using local produce as much as possible.
We've been visiting The Cathrine Wheel for years and it's always good. The food is really good and the staff are all nice people. Couldn't ask for more really.
Great Sunday lunch. Try and get a table in the lovely front rooms. The back room is a but small and gloomy.
Lovely meal and surroundings. Staff accommodated the order, which was not straight forward, with no problem at all. Had a great time.
We’ve been going to the Catherine Wheel for some years now with friends and/ or family and always have an excellent meal. We love going there and it is certainly the favourite place to eat for both myself and my brother. My husband is veggie/ vegan and can always find something on the menu, though would like more choice, which is often enjoyed by non- vegans/ veggies, of course!
Shall be there again soon!
Love this new booking and feedback site!
Thanks again to the staff at the Catherine Wheel.
This is a great pub, very friendly with good food and open through the afternoons. I've visited regularly to meet a friend every 2-3 months over the last couple of years and it's always been very enjoyable.
Very nice meal on Saturday evening . Booked on line easy to do . Table was ready when we got there .Staff very pleasant and nothing was to much trouble . Food was excellent and nice and hot when arrived at the table. Had a starter and main course to full for a pudding but will leave room for one next time
Flexible reslonse regarding our on-line booking when we were delayed on the road.
Meals were very good and promptly served on a summer Saturday lunchtime.
Staff were very good.
The Catherine Wheel is a proper village pub. The bar area was busy bustling and noisy. But the dining area is a separate room which avoid makes it good for converation. The menu has the pub classics but also a good selection of other things. Good food, good size portions and good value. Highly recommended.
I liked the Cathrine Wheel very much. The lady behind the bar was very friendly, the decoration was tasteful and it felt like a locals pub. The food (Sea Bass) was excellent and arrived faster than I expected, given the number of people ordering. I will be going back.
Restaurant quality food at pub food prices, we were really really surprised at how good it was. Plenty on the plate, no skimping , we went hope full and happy. Will be back for some lunchtime repeats very soon !
Our third time as a group of 12 - absolutely no criticism about anything. Good pub and grub.
Second time I’ve been there and each time never failed to impress
Another superb Sunday lunch .
Outstanding value , very generous portions and delicious food .
Cannot fault , we shall return again soon
As ever the Catherine Wheel performed. The food was superb and value. Staff were as always very friendly.
Personally my only concern is their coffee lets them down - only cafetières are available which is a shame for coffee lovers. Often the strength of coffee is either way too strong or very very weak! Not an issue to stop me going there but just a shame when all else is superb. The place is always full and has a great ambience. Well done once again.
Had a pleasant experience, the food was just what the doctor ordered, we will return
I took my mum for lunch on her birthday. She’s 87 and has been enjoying The Catherine Wheel for many years. Since her stroke it’s been harder to get to, so it was a lovely surprise when I took her there. The food was great as usual, simple, well done pub grub, with chunky chips and huge portions. Lovely service throughout. We were able to bring our little dog who also enjoyed the experience watching people come and go. No issues filing his water bowl or being able to put his little bed down beside our table. Welcoming, comfortable, satisfying and consistent. Well done guys !!
Food was fantastic service was good and good prices would recommend this to someone who is looking for a place to go for Sunday lunch 😃
Excellent food and service on a very busy day. Well done all, thanks for a great meal!
It was perfect for a family gathering. All the staff were very pleasant and attentive. And on Mothering Sunday too, when they were run off their feet.
Highly recommended, and we will be going again.
We were all looking forward to getting together to celebrate 2 birthdays and mothers day.
We were really disappointed when my grandfather's meal (that arrived last) was the wrong one so this was returned and took a long time to come. By this point everyone else had finished.
There was also a mix up meaning the 2 children's chickens roasts didn't arrive. The poor girls were very hungry and we made do with parts from Everyone else's meals instead of waiting even longer for theirs, especially as the didn't understand why they were not allowed to have their meal with all of us.
Everyone that had a roast said it was cold. The side veg and potatoes that were served were also all very cold although all plates were extreamly hot.
The table staff were apologetic over the missed meals and did offer 2 free desserts or we would not have to pay for my grandfather's meal but We were so dissapointed we didn't want to stay for puddings.
Had lunch here with 2 friends and we all agreed that the food, the staff, the venue and the service were all excellent. We will definitely visit again and would happily recommend the Catherin Wheel to friends and family.
Would have received 5stars except that one of my friends on a table of 6 received a cold plate & a large roast potato not cooked in the middle. This was remedied by cheerful & apologetic staff & a fresh serving was supplied on a hot plate . Smaller roast potatoes, well cooked, were also served .
The rest of us were very happy with our lovely hot plates,
We had a lovely evening at the Catherine Wheel, food was very good, great service. My only slight moan would be access to the bar when ordering drinks, the bar was crowded with people on seats making it a little difficult to get to the bar. Overall we had great service and will definitely be back.
A place to keep going back to. Ambience really good but when full some may find it too much. The food choices are excellent and should suit all needs and tastes. The fact it is always full is reason enough to return. Staff very friendly and polite. The owner is always positive, and will
Do her best to fit everyone in and ensure they are Looked after well . There can be a wait when full but it’s worth waiting for !! The staff are honest regarding wait times so You know when the food is coming abd it will s always served hot in piping hot plates.
Finally the prices are such good value fir what one gets. Fantastic value fir a pub in the outskirts of Bath. Highly recommended. *
Food, Service and location were great. It was very noisy and tables very close together so not easy to have a quiet conversation! Maybe visiting on a different (not so busy!) day may be a good plan!
A bustling village pub as far as I could tell made up of local people which says a lot. Good pub food sensibly prices. I had ham egg and chips. Crispy chips 2 perfect eggs and Wiltshire ham. Local ice cream for pudding. Will be going again
Great food, great staff, great value. Highly recommended!
The best Sunday lunch. Great food and service as always. Never disappointed
This pub exceeded our expectations - Sunday Roast was superb with various side dushes, fresh veg & good gravy - as good as you can get. Dessert was off the scale and coffee was smooth and in large jug with side choc. Just such a lot of detail went into the offering and the Catherine Wheel deserves full praise for what they delivered - don't change anything cus we'll be back soon!
Had a lovely meal with friends and our kids. The staff were great and very accommodating and the food was excellent and good value. The pub is very quaint and comfortable.
Sunday lunch great quality, quantity and staff.....
Quite surprised and disappointed really as the reviews were very good. The quality of the food was poor, clearly cooked from frozen, mushy and tasteless. The fish pie was like wallpaper paste. After comparing it to what was coming out on the other tables I’d say choosing the fish and chips and fish pie was a bad choice. The roast turkey looked better from a distance. Strange dining experience as it’s quiet and partially empty, pairing that with the really underwhelming food made for a generally bad experience. Really friendly landlady, which was a small positive. A shame really as, being new to the area, we had high hopes.
Had a SUPERB meal as always.
Food was wonderful and lots of it too!
Service was excellent.
Our local pub !! Definitely highly recommend it to everyone.
Fantastic food with large portion sizes struggled to finish and tasted great
A favourite of ours, so accommodating to its customers. Never had a bad meal! X
This restaurant/pub is a little off the beaten track but well worth the drive. The seating is very good, large tables, there were 7 in our party and plenty of room with comfy chairs. We ordered food at the bar and once that arrived, the waiter and waitress were more than happy to continue taking our orders for drinks and deserts at the table. There were lots to chose from on the menu, we had two vegetarians in our party and there was more than enough choice for them too.
The bill was not expensive, the whole experience was great and we will definitely go back
Nice surroundings and good lunchtime food, enjoyable atmosphere
Great food! Absolutely superb sunday lunch. No problems at all asking for gluten free options and one meal to be cooked well done. All food came out exactly as asked and tasted fantastic!
We had the Sunday roast dinner and it was delicious. The staff were so friendly and helpful and the sticky toffee pudding was great. We shall definitely be back.
A lovely find in a beautiful village. Looked very enticing and atmospheric from the outside and the ambience was excellent. We ate in a lovely dining room just off the bar, and we were well looked after by the lovely lady who served us
