The food is designed to match the relaxed dining environment, with the main focus on the use of seasonal and local produce, with menus changing monthly to reflect the freshest produce available. A 2 and 3 course set menu is available on a lunchtime and presents the opportunity for extremely good value for money, along with an a la carte menu running all day. Perfect for special occasions as well as regular relaxed dining.
First time we had but but would definitely go back
Went for Sunday lunch with my wife, the food was great, service and were ambiance outstanding
Wow. One of the best meals we've had in the UK in a long time. We will be back. Superb. Thankyou
A great evening.Starter was delicious. Fluffy souffle. Main was well balanced and moreish. Shin of beef succulent and nicely presented.
Delicious Beef Wellington and Chicken Supreme. Really polite and pleasant service.
Interesting and tasty first two courses of lunchtime menu. Desserts weren't quite of the same calibre. Nice staff, nice setting. Very reasonable price.
Great value for money attentive pleasant friendly staff good service would recommend without hesitation
Exceptionally pleasant and capable staff. Delicious food from a limited menu (Sunday lunch) at a good price. Extensive wine list. We thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The only minor complaint was that the room was a little chilly as the fire door appeared not to close properly but it improved as more customers arrived.
Extremely steep stairs to access so not great if you have mobility issues. Lovely spacious rooms, with good amount to space between each table. Super clean, first class staff and excellent menu and good all beautifully presented. We will definitely return. One small quibble is that we would have preferred a steak knife with our beef wellingtons as it would have made eating them a little bit easier, but in the overall scheme of things it’s not a big issue.
We all went for the great value set menu. It was interesting and well executed. Loved the haddock Scotch egg. Picpoul and Rijoca wines were lovely. I didn’t really like the house white. Comfy seating. Good temperature. Service helpful and friendly. Tap water no prob. Why not five stars? It was too noisy at times and difficult for those with hearing issues. Only one ladies and gents loo each (that I saw, maybe was another elsewhere) but was clean and well stocked. Would definitely return
I really enjoyed my visit to The Cellar Door. The service was really good from the moment we walked in, and the food was excellent. My only negative, which is quite minor, is that I was told that a seat on the table would be dressed for one of the guest's birthday. However, when we were shown to our table it hadn't been done. Overall though, this didn't matter too much as we had a great afternoon. I would definitely recommend.
We had the set menu which we thought was quite good value
Great food, good wine selection and great value and excellent service.
Excellent standard of food and set menu is great value . Staff always very professional and friendly.
Absolutely excellent as always, food great, lovely service and amazing value.
Not impressed with lunch menu
Friends steak asked for well done came medium. I had gnocchi tasted like rubber and coffee cups with no handles not a good idea very jot
Excellent as always. We will be back soon. Thank you
Good food. But the room was cold, so I wore my coat when we were eating.
Lovely restaurant with excellent service and great food. Would definitely recommend for a special night out
Service was incredibly slow Staff run off their feet and clearly overworked and understaffed. Badly organised
Not enough staff as the restaurant was full. Had to wait a long time for our bottle of wine.
Imaginative, well presented, tasty dishes. Extensive wine list. Good service. I would have preferred quieter or less poppy music.
Food was very tasty but wasn't hot. The staff were very helpful and friendly but not enough of them.
First time and definitely attend again! I had a friend come to visit me and so wanted to take her somewhere nice and everything was lovely! Thank you! (Bottom floor, table by the stair case).
The food was superb. The menu was classy, but unpretentious. As good as anything we've had and good value. Wine list was extensive. Service was excellent. Highly recommended.
Amazing food and attentive staff, could not wish for more.Great restaurant and at a great price .
We had high hopes when we booked, but the food wasn’t up to the standard. The miso mushroom dish was so salty it was practically inedible and the beef wellington was dry and the meat was slightly tough, considering it was fillet. The partridge starter was also dry although the cheese soufflé was nice. The restaurant has pretensions of high class cooking so we were quite disappointed. Service was lovely and it had a nice atmosphere.
Great birthday meal with my son and friends.
Gorgeous food, lovely service. Need to book ahead !
A hidden gem! Friendly service with a lovely treat at the end for birthday girls and boys! The lunchtime menu was really good quality and value for money.
We came for a girls lunch with friends. The food was delightful, I ordered from the all in lunch menu which was very good value for money. Unfortunately the service was particularly slow. We waited nearly half an hour for 2 sweets and a cheese board. We were seated in the cellar area which was very atmospheric but very dim which made reading the small printed menus difficult. The wines were quite expensive but overall a very pleasant couple of hours spent here. Would definitely return.
Unfortunately had table under staircase which was quite dingy. Looked pleasant on the upper floor. Had food off set menu which was just ok. Maybe food better off a la carte which looked quite expensive
Food ok. Was told the beef Wellington would be ‘very pink’; it was grey and tough. Onion rings were practically crucified and the explanation was because ‘they use seasoned flour’. Replacements were perfectly cooked and golden brown. Service was very good and overall ambience pleasant.
This is absolutely the best dinner we had in Durham. Highly recommend for special occasions, dates, and families’ time. Thanks so much for the incredible food and service!
Later afternoon so not many other people around. Service was great attentive but not over intrusive. Sadly Onion rings rather over done but steak was great
Superb find in busy Durham, lovely quiet Monday night with well spaced tables and all staff wearing masks all of the time. Felt very safe and food was good too.
They charged me for still water and I always ask for tap water so that was annoying and is why I removed a star.
Terrible steep narrow stairs as entrance access. Could not take elderly relatives or wheelchair using friends. Another big negative.
Absolutely excellent staff.
Very slow service ,long wait after starter to main coming 35 mins ...
Food was only warm not hot , but was very nice , lamb dinner the yorkshire puddings are huge!!
Pudding waz to die for , lemon curd meringue and earl grey icecream
We had plans change so booked here at the last minute for a date night. The food was, as ever, cooked to perfection. My husband had the Oxtail followed by the beef wellington and finished with the cheeseboard. I had the pear to start followed by the artichoke risotto, I’ve never really been a fan of risotto but this has converted me, then I finished with the lemon curd topped with candy floss all washed down with a bottle of the Smoking Loon a wonderful evening
Delicious food, excellent vegan options, efficient service and a great location
One of the nicest meals we have had. Excellent. Will definitely book again.
