The Cellar Door
There are multiple rooms and floors to provide options for outdoor dining, private dining and larger group bookings.
The food is designed to match the relaxed dining environment, with the main focus on the use of seasonal and local produce, with menus changing monthly to reflect the freshest produce available. A 2 and 3 course set menu is available on a lunchtime and presents the opportunity for extremely good value for money, along with an a la carte menu running all day. Perfect for special occasions as well as regular relaxed dining.
My partner was not really that impressed with Ricotta and Beetroot starter or the ‘sticky toffee pudding’ dessert. Came to just under £120 for 2 for 3 courses with wine
The strawberry soufflé is delicious. Great views on the terrace outside of the river. Very relaxing atmosphere. Totally unstuffy
Visited the Cellar Door for my husband birthday. We found the experience disappointing. The room was very cold (which is due to covid - keeping the door open).
We were the first couple in the restaurant and waiting 45 minutes to receive our starter. We visited for lunch and ended up staying for 2 hours due to the waiting time.
The food arrived and was barely warm. This unfortunately was the case for each dish. My husband ordered a steak for his main which again arrived with a cold sauce and just warm steak. We ended up sending this back which resulted in one of us eating while the other watched.
The desserts were lovely and we really enjoyed these.
Such a shame as the food and experience could have been amazing.
An awkward welcome set the scene for a disappointing visit, after being highly recommended by a friend. Although very busy, being fathers day, the restaurant wasn't hectic which eased my apprehension but, immediately, that apprehension was restored when, on two occasions, I asked for my partner and I to be moved to another table from a "wind tunnel" caused by an open door (necessary for Covid rules). Both times my requests were denied, where an apology and a blanket was offered instead! Really? I regret not leaving at that moment but Fathers Day would have filled any bookings elsewhere so had little option but to endure the cold as I ate the attractive and, to begin with, tasty Sunday dinner, soon spoiled by the constant rush of cool air leaving half the meal "refrigerated" and, in turn, inedible. It was impossible for us to remain for another course and left feeling that an apology and a thankyou for coming was no where near enough to appease the dissatisfaction of such poor customer service. I am sure, on another day and on another table, our visit could have been far more enjoyable, I suggest the restaurant simply removes that table to prevent disappointing future customers.
Excellent food. The starter was delicious and the Sunday roast portion was very generous. Very friendly and efficient service from Katie. Would highly recommend.
The food is of a high standard and good value for money especially the set lunch time menu however the length of time waiting for our main course was ridiculous the only excuse given by the waitress was everything’s cooked from fresh. Any professionally run kitchen should be able to cope with timings looking at other reviews this seems to be a regular complaint. Shame I won’t return as the food is lovey someone needs to address this issue.
Very good meal, lamb was wonderful and out waitress Katie did her best to make sure everything was good
Good was very good and good value. Service was just right, easy to get attention but not over the top of you all the time. It was the first time I’d been and I would definitely recommend it and I will return
We had an absolutely fantastic evening, the food was delicious and the overall experience was exceptional. Particular note goes to Katie, who looked after us very well throughout the meal. We look forward to visiting again soon!
A fabulous discovery. Attentive and interactive staff plus a fab location made for a special evening
We booked a table outside for lunch to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary (with our eldest son and dog!). The food on the set-price menu was excellent (pudding to die for!), the service superb, and we couldn't have asked for a better experience. Looking forward to returning when we're next in Durham.
Good food and surroundings but service a bit slow and coffee pretty poor
Amazing food and service, as well as a great view of the RIver Wear. Contemporry European with some great flavors and wit.
Delicious Beef Wellington. Knowledgable and attentive staff.
Food lovely, if pricey. All serving staff very friendly
Food was delicious! The biggest Yorkshire pudding I have ever seen. Highly recommend
We were shown to our table and ordered shortly after our arrival. However we waited 40 minutes for sunday lunch and in the end had to ask for waitress to check on our food. It did arrive shortly after. The restaurant wasn't full and had very little atmosphere. I don't remember any music or chatter. It left me feeling something was missing. The food was good , roast lamb and veg but we were put off ordering dessert because of the time it had taken to receive our mains. I didnt have the patience or time to wait another 30 minutes or more. It was difficult to catch the attention of waiting staff and we ended up having to go to them to pay the bill. No thank you or see you later as we left. Not the friendliest of places
Excellent food and service as usual, certainly recommend it!!
Lovely restaurant, maybe a little too modern interior considering its location. Very good food, good wine selection and courteous service.
The service we received was great, friendly and efficient.
The food superb,
Really high quality food with excellent table service. A lovely evening for our whole family.
My wife and I had lunch here on Saturday 13th June. The service was attentive and friendly and the food and wine were excellent. We sat outside on the balcony with lovely views of the river. I wouldn’t hesitate to return.
Excellent service and quality as ways. Our server (Jasmine) was also superb and very knowledgeable answering any questions about the menu or wine list. Can't wait to visit again.
Lovely food again, some staff better than others to our main waitress was very good.
This is our third visit and will use again.
Fantastic food and the lunch menu was such great value. My dessert (espresso cake) was a bit disappointing as it was dry and the menu was unclear what exactly the desserts were, but the service and rest of the meal made up for it.
. Pleasant staff. Slow service. A long time waiting for courses. Onion rings and chips quite hard and overcooked. Extremely small portions of both the mackerel starter and the trout main. All delicious
The best fine dining restaurant in Durham. Amazing service and food.
Loved the whole experience. We were lucky with the weather so could enjoy the dining area outside. The food was delicious and the service great. The only negative thing was the level of noise coming from the extractor ...
We had Sunday Dinner for two. The food was delicious, and the service was excellent. Will definitely make a return visit.
We dined on a Sunday lunchtime and had starters and mains including mackerel with rhubarb and chicken parfait which were both lovely we then had a beef and a lamb roast dinner which were really nice. The service was attentive and you felt safe with the COVID precautions that they had in place the tables were spaced nicely. We have ate in the Cellar door many times and are glad to see them back open serving quality food.
The Cellar Door is highly recommended. The food, service and ambience were all exceptional and the view from our table on the upper deck was magnificent.
An excellent evening. Service was very friendly and efficient. Elle was really good. Food was delicious. We all had three courses and can particularly recommend the venison and the lamb, but everything was really good. A thoroughly enjoyable evening.
Had a lovely lunch by the river. Food and wine were delicious and our server Katie was very welcoming and helpful. Overall we had a fabulous and very reasonably priced, afternoon. Looking forward to our next visit.
Really good food and the staff were so friendly and helpful.
Food was incredible but service let it down - in the restaurant for 2 hours and only had two courses and 1 drink. Staff unresponsive or proactive to our needs, no check backs etc. Sat out in the sun without staff asking if we needed more water or the umbrella up. Would come back as the food was worth it but staff could use some more training
Asked for a table on balcony when booking on open table . This was not acknowledged when we went in. She attempted to seat us indoors. I stated that the request was sitting on balcony. She asked us to take a seat in bar until she asked the manager. She arranged a table on the balcony for us. We had a 3 course meal, which was very nice. The paint on the tables was flaking off. I felt this lowered the standard of the restaurant. Overall we did enjoy the meal and would definitely go back.
As always, good value.
Had a lovely experience at the Cellar Door. Would definitely go back when I’m Durham! Worth paying a visit to anyone in the area. Lovely setting, staff and food! Cheese Soufflé one of the best!
Lovely meal especially the raspberry chocolate pudding which was amazing.
Excellent from start to finish. A warm and friendly welcome, attentive service, delicious wine and food. Highly recommneded
