The Chef and I
Folks can choose to order off the menu or do a chef’s tasting seven days a week.
We offer a chef’s tasting at two levels: five or seven courses; a culinary experience comprised of what’s in season and what the chefs are inspired to share with you that day.
Additionally, we offer regular menus for lunch, brunch, dinner, and happy hour. Executive Chef Chris Rains and his staff carefully curate these menus seasonally.
Counter (Show Kitchen) seating is limited and generally requires a reservation. If you desire Counter (Show Kitchen) seating, please select "counter" seating when you make your reservation.
We have a 24-hour cancellation policy. Any reservations cancelled within 24 hours of the reservation date/time is subject to a $20 per seat charge.
One of the best meals I have had in Nashville! Such a fun experience! Make sure to sit at the counter to watch the chefs prepare the food.
Remarkable food, remarkable staff. They accommodated our large group, dietary restrictions, and special event. A fabulous experience, especially at the chef’s counter with Chef Sara
Believe what you read about this place. Wonderful!
We went for my son’s birthday. Everyone at the restaurant we friendly and attentive. Great food... you can talk to and watch the chefs as they cook...do the seven courses...fantastic!
This is why I love Open Table, to find restaurants like this one. It was a culinary delight. It looks and feels cool. The servers and kitchen are friendly and the food unbelievable! They have an outstanding lunch option with flavors the excite the palette. I’ll be back.
Food was delicious and entire experience was great. Highly recommend the brussels, and butternut squash salad for apps.
It was such a great place to dine at in Nashville. Outstanding!
The food was fresh and the menu was filled with such flavorful combinations. Not only was it delicious we thoroughly enjoyed watching them prepare the meal in front of us. The staff was friendly and engaging making it a fabulous experience. It is our new favorite restaurant.
Amazing experience and close to a top meal I’ve had. From beginning to end, the food was delicious. While the sea scallops were amazing on their own, the rice was just as delicious. The elk tenderloin and hangar steak were tender and tasty. Do yourself a favor and order the foil gras or roasted red bell pimento Cheese and House bacon shareable. You will not be disappointed. Service was outstanding as well.
Sat at the chefs table and had a fabulous dinner with our daughters!
Outstanding food and service! Matt and David were extremely friendly, knowledgeable, and accommodating. We will definitely come back the next time we come to Nashville.
We did the tasting menu and everything was excellent! Great service. Sat at the counter to watch the process - very fun. Will definitely go back!
Great brunch! Watching the Chefs at work was a highlight! Food was delicious.
What a wonderful restaurant!! Food was tremendous and the service impeccable. A little more expensive but well worth the prices!
The Chef and I has now become my FAVORITE Nashville fine-dining establishment. Every moment is perfect- from when you are greeted by the best valet attendant in town to the special attention that you get from the culinary, serving and bar staff to when you drive away. Every serving is exquisite- from the cocktails and small plate servings (get the brussel sprouts and cauliflower and ANYTHING with the smoked salmon) to the entrees (get the elk, veal or any fish) and desserts (get 'em all). The atmosphere is fun and the open kitchen makes you feel like family. Brunch is awesome too. This is a must for anyone visiting Nashville and long-timers like me.
Michael, the manager, was also our waiter. Outstanding!
This is an outstanding dining experience! Personalized, attentive from valet parking to serving to quality of food and conversation with chefs! Excellent in every aspect!
If you enjoy eating delicious food, you need to go to the Chef and I. If you have even a passing interest in cooking you need to make a Counter reservation so you can watch these masters prepare the delicious food. It was like getting a crash course at culinary school. After watching in silence for fifteen minutes I finally worked up the nerve to ask a question, which, busy as the sous chef was, he still answered with no hint of irritation. Of course, this only encouraged me to ask other sous chefs other questions, all of which were answered. I ordered the Chef's tasting, something I'd never done before. One of the courses was tuna belly. I don't like tuna and was willing to just skip that course, but no, they insisted on finding something I'd like (a scallop in coconut broth, which was outstanding). The Chef's Tasting forced me out of my comfort zone, but every course was wonderful. Best of all, even though I was a solo diner, Mike (my server) never treated me as an afterthought, or with any less attention than his larger parties. I was only visiting Nashville (I live out of state) but if I'm ever here again, you can bet I'll be having dinner at The Chef and I, sitting at the counter, taking notes and quizzing the chefs.
Great food in the Gulch. We went on NewYear’s Day and sat at the counter. I had a nice seasonal hand crafted cocktail of gin, orange bitters and cinnamon. We shared the apple salad, which had a surprisingly good pepper kick that went well with the sweet apple slices, julienned and abundant in the salad. The brussel spout and bacon starter was excellent, and I highly recommend it, although brussel sprouts are ubiquitous, this is definitely the place to eat them. Portions are generous, so the two of us split the elk, which was perfectly cooked mid rare, and surprisingly tender without a gamey flavor. For dessert we split a dark chocolate sorbet, which, again, was generously sized with two large scoops. Decadent flavor, but as a sorbet, was a light way to finish dinner.
Sitting at the counter we got to observe this amazing kitchen crew, mostly female, including the soups chef and expo person. They were a pleasure to watch. Great food, great staff, what is not to like? Go if you can. Put it high on your list when visiting Nashville.
Outstanding. Cannot wait to return!
Second time here. Anything you put in your mouth at the chef and I will be a gastronomical delight. Seriously one of the best restaurants and best meals I’ve had in my life and I’ve been to 30 countries. Can’t say enough about this place. True epicurean thrill.
We had a fantastic time celebrating our Anniversary with the 7 course meal. The meal was perfectly portioned with a wide variety of spectacular combinations of flavors. I highly recommend sitting at the bar to watch chef Chris and his team work their magic. A definite “do-over “ in our book!
Great food ! Great people ! Great experience return every time we are in Nashville!
Chefs not as personable as they once were. Felt like Waffle House cooks. No offense cause Waffle House is awesome. But for the $$. Chefs need to be little more passionate. Just my opinion. Elk was killer. Food and waiter were great.
Great spot. Open concept. Amazing dishes and drinks.
Would return in a heartbeat.
Our server made excellent recommendations. I apologize I don't remember his name.
Very nice concept. Bar seating and watch food preparation, but uncomfortable seating and limited bar. Very good service, but generally poor value - overpriced.
One of the best dinners I have had in 5 years of dining out in Nashville. Sitting at the counter is a must. Highly recommend the tasting menu. The service here is fantastic and the kitchen staff is meticulous. The food is amazing, down to every tiny detail. The most underrated, 5 star place in town. Just amazing from start to finish. Worth every damn penny.
Todd was the best server and bar tender ever! We loved the Elk and he made great recommendations for appetizers.
Always good and always fun sitting around the counter. Everyone we take with us loves it.
Nope. The stars say everything.
Best waffle we've ever had... apple cider sorbet was delightful... chefs were talented, entertaining, and so friendly... such an amazing experience
Amazing as always!!!!
We dine at The Chef and I about once a month. It has become our favorite restaurant in Nashville. Staff is friendly and quite entertaining, especially if you sit at the counter. Food is always amazing. I’ve never had a bad meal here. Also their mixed drinks and wine selections are good. If you haven’t tried this restaurant, you should go soon. Also the music selections are great.
We had such a great time at the The Chef and I. We were there celebrating my wife's 40th birthday. We spent about 20 minutes at the bar waiting for our counter-service reservation. The bartender (Todd) made some fun drinks for us and was very entertaining. Our meal at the corner was FANTASTIC. Our group tried almost every appetizer and engaged with the cooks the whole time. Scott was particularly friendly and gave us some great inside info on the restaurant and the food. We'll definitely be back next time we're in Nashville! Must tries = the pimento cheese & bacon, the caramelized cauliflower and the burrata salad!
Four of us enjoyed the open kitchen concept. We ordered four different things back fit was great! The appetizers were wonderful as were the entrees. Check this place out!
Outstanding! I enjoyed the 7-course tasting menu and each course was better than the last. The depth of flavor and deliciousness of everything I tasted makes the Chef and I a must visit! I also enjoyed the Almond cake dessert and it was exceptional. Highly recommend. Also, kudos to their staff of friendly servers and bartenders.
My daughter and granddaughters ages 6 & 9 ate at the Chef and I after attending the Nutcracker. We looked for a restaurant that had something a bit special to offset dining boredom for the girls. We could not have been happier. From the moment we entered and were seated at the counter the staff was attentive, kind and encouraging these burgeoning foodies. A visit with the chefs and encouraging conversations ensued amongst us. Bonus, the food is exceptional and beautiful to look at. Thank you to the staff and chefs of The Chef and I, we will be back with yet more family soon!
Arrived on a Saturday night. We were not expecting beer hall style seating. I enjoy this but not when I am wanting to sit down and enjoy a high-quality meal. We were sat right at the entrance and there was something happening outside at an adjoining location or something because there was a steady stream a workers coming in and out. It was cold. We had the scallops as an app and they were great but everything went downhill from there. The foie gras was very uninspired. The main course, well lets just leave it at I can't even remember what I had, so not very memorable. I would maybe try again but only the tasting where they sit you in a different part of the restaurant, which looked much more appropriate for the over $100 per person spend.
The meal was great but the arugula salad was the best I've ever had! The hightop tables are uncomfortable and crowded. I would go again.
Another awesome experience. This was our first time sitting at the counter and we would highly recommend it.
