Visited during the first day of tighter covid restrictions ( facemasks when leaving the table etc). It was well explained. The weather was bad so everyone was inside but the staff worked well. I would use it again. Good food, old English pub , historic village, free parking. V GOOD.
Great place to go for lunch. Recommend the Moules Mariniere
A lovely birthday lunch for my wife
Very good service .. lee was a master server and was faultless. .. food was wonderful.
Another fantastic Sunday lunch next to the river looking forward to next week already 😃
lovely food, we've been going there for the last few weekends enjoyed it every time
We arrived at 12:45pm for our booking and was seated inside, after asking to be moved outside we were given a lovely table overlooking the river.
We placed our order for food and drink and drinks were brought out shortly after.
We then waited for 30mins to get our starter but it was a busy day so nothing too major. After we had finished our starter a waiter came over to reconfirm our order (A carvery and a pizza ) this was about 1:30pm and despite numerous reminders and prompts by 3:15pm we decided to leave as it did not seem that we would be getting our food.
Food was good as always however did have a bit of a wait for the mains as they were busy.
Lovely pub, full of character and a great riverside setting!!
Staff are very friendly, food great and overall a great little place!!
Waited more than an hour for 2 salads. £12 per salad, not worrh it
Lovely little pub with really good food & great service
Very pleasant Sunday lunch with friends
The carvery was good but we had to wait over 45 minutes for a simple dessert and even then it didn’t come. We left without dessert and so then had two crying children all the way home.
Most disappointing and I doubt we will go back.
A great shame as their sister restaurant, The Hengist, is one of our favourites.
The chequers was very accommodating with adding 4 more people to our original booking. We arrived at 6.45 with the amazing singer and ordered food around 7.30. The service was extremely slow. We finally received our mains at 9.15 after asking a few times what was the hold up. We got the impression the kitchen was under pressure with take away meals plus the meals in the pub it was pribably alot busier as they was offering 25% off meals. For the wait we did get a round of drinks taken off the bill. We would return to the chequers as we do enjoy it there we just think that night maybe they was over stretched with orders. The singer was brilliant really enjoyed him.
Great food great service lovely setting
Terrible service when we first got there, then when our male waiter took over he was over attentive. Took ages to receive our ‘nibbles’ - starters were ok. Even if the prawns were a little messy on the plate and could have been better presented. We had to chase drinks etc at first. The kitchen door wasn’t working, kept jamming, which meant we kept hearing the radio in the kitchen etc. Chef kept coming out of the kitchen too so the bell obviously can’t be heard and needs to be replaced. Fish was lovely, chips were a little undercooked. Don’t think we’ll visit again.
After a pleasant walk from Allington Lock it was wonderful to relax outside with that lovely view of the old bridge. Food was delicious! Hubby had the pork ribs and I had the seafood and avocado salad. Excellent value and friendly attentive service. We can’t wait for a mooring there so we can come by boat!!
Good start to weekend overlooking the river
Food was hot and fresh - service outstanding and very reasonably priced.
Lovely atmosphere. Very helpful staff helping me with my pram and anything we needed.
We waited quite a while for our food but needless to say it was beautiful food when it arrived and worth it. But the little one was getting very hungry. Wont put us off going back we will just time it better i think. 5*
Another lovely long Sunday lunch overlooking the river 👍🏻
Really nice garden at the back by the river.
Friendly welcoming staff.
No car park - need to park at bottom of high street (free) - 3 min walk so no problem - but wish I'd known in advance as had to drive past pub down country road and turn round!
The service was diabolical, so slow.
The menu did not have much to offer.
The food on the plate looked a mess.
The desserts were awful. Very disappointing considering it is in a nice place.
fabulous definitely return. Professional service, food was awesome.
Excellent service with fantastic food! Pub was COVID safe so felt extremely comfortable whilst visiting.
Beautiful views outside. Lovely ambience inside. Seemed busy but spaced out. Food was incredible. Really enjoyed it & will be returning!
Lovely main and setting. Table wasn’t great Location as heavy foot traffic being next to dumb waiter station and steps but didn’t see another two seater to ask move plus knew it was bookings only.
Dessert was a bit to be desired. Overpriced at £6.50 for what was a square portion of bought-in chocolate fudge cake. Didn’t taste very much of chocolate nor did it feel luxurious. Was expecting it to be more gooey and fudge like.
Would visit again for mains and perhaps starters (Asking for a different table) but give the desserts a wide berth as even when using EOTHO they weren’t worth the price. Mix up with the bill but I feel honesty is always the best policy and paid the undercharge that the waitress had put through by accident to ensure we paid the full amount of the bill rather then the saved amount.
We booked a table online with no hassle even when on an eat out to help out day
The service was friendly and accommodating.
Food arrived swiftly. Great portion, hot and very tasty
Will be returning and would recommend
Staff friendly and very flexible, allowing us to have pre-lunch drinks on their riverside terrace while choosing from menu. Returned indoors to eat, as was quite windy.
Food quality was good, with a wide choice.
My wife and I enjoyed the starters: Bread Board and Sizzling Prawns.
I had steak, which was well cooked and very tender.
My wife had Salmon, Crayfish and Avocado salad, which she enjoyed, except for the Marie Rose dressing. She felt that the dressing should have been offered as an option, as it was not listed on menu.
This comment fed back to the chef, at the time.
We both enjoyed the Eton Mess. The meringue was a very nice and subtle ingredient: not too overpowering.
No wine list was available and made choosing difficult. Told that they were waiting for lists to be printed. Not available online, either.
We were given a 2 hour slot: 3-5 pm, as per current Covid-19 regulations. Had completed main course by 4.30pm. The waitress brought menu card for dessert, but then didn’t return for 20 minutes to take our order. In consequence, we had no time for coffee, as we had to vacate our table by 5.00pm. A pity, as ours was a Wedding Anniversary lunch & coffee would have rounded off our celebration meal.
Great food and good service. We'll definitely visit again.
Friendly staff, good food, lovely place. My friends and I all enjoyed the experience in these very difficult times
The menu offers a good choice and the food was delicious. Well cooked, great presentation and very generous portions. Although busy the service was friendly and I personally have no problem waiting for freshly prepared food.
I would not rate this restaurant at all. When arriving we got sat on the smallest of table where are food didn’t even fit on the table. Our drinks took 35 mins to arrive! When our food was served my chicken burger was raw, the bbq ribs were under cooked when reporting this to the waiter he said what do you mean.
I paid full price and didn’t make a fuss. But would not recommend or visit here again!
The food at the Chequers is outstanding and have never had a bad meal there.
Not bad for an informal meal. Reasonable food and service.
Good food gap between courses to long apart from that good place to dine
Location is lovely but overpriced food and average service. Starters were good but the homemade lasagne was way below average.
We’d consider returning for drinks but not food.
Lovely meal friendly staff service was slow but they were very busy and they forgot the avocado in the salad but did apologise we all had a lovely evening and would highly recommended it
Great little pub restaurant. Steak was amazing. All food tasted great 😀
