The Civic at the Broadview Hotel
The menu is varied and there were lots of dishes that I could choose from. Often when I go to brunch I'm not always thrilled with the menu options, but not here. I wanted to try a few dishes. I opted for the traditional eggs benny with salmon and a salad. They were cooked to perfection (not hard) and the bechamel sauce was not overwhelming or too much - just right and the salad dressing was not overpowering. My husband had the fried chicken sandwich with fries and that looked good too.
I thought the prices were reasonable considering the location and it's downtown Toronto. The ambience is ok - it was a bit loud for me (but not impossible to hear people talk).
The experience was completely horrendous. From the waiters physically touching my food to arguing with me about what proper etiquette is... this was a 1 star experience... at best! On top of everything it took 45 minutes just to get a drink. I’d recommend this restaurant as a comparison to McDonald’s or Burger King’s service. Enjoy if you want to eat at a restaurant that is constantly performing various health violations on their customers food and the waitress flipping you off as you walk out the door.
Furthermore, Ryan Campbell the manager, is completely incompetent and any disagreement with him will lead you to being escorted out of the restaurant. He has no experience in customer service and should be at a Fast food at best... zero communication skills, zero customer service and definitely do not comply with the food safety code of practice.
Slow slow slow!
Four of us had dinner at The Civic - first time for all of us. It was a great evening. Terrific ambiance and excellent advice on the wine options. The menu was not extensive but it was varied and each of the mains we ordered was well prepared and lived up to the descriptions. Good food is not the only thing that makes a great restaurant, it's often the service that makes an evening memorable. Our server, Christine, was superb. Professional but relaxed and welcoming, she never missed a beat, kept our wine glasses filled, helped us decide on menu choices and didn't make us feel rushed. An evening worth repeating - we'll be back!
The hotel and the Civic were very cool. The menu is limited and the food was just OK. We all decided that we would not rush back.
Service was also just OK (maybe started off short staffed??) and staff were not that friendly to us.
The hostess’s were dull/unfriendly no smiles and not welcoming. Waitress was the absolute worst, did not introduce herself, talk about the menu, ask about allergies, barely spoke & again no smiles and unwelcoming. The food was way overpriced and terrible , need an actual chef who can cook!!! I would suggest to management that they look at hiring staff that can actually do their job well and remind them they are in the hospitality industry. I delay as if they were doing me a favour!! Wrong .. will not be returning and will suggest to friends/family to bypass the Civc.
Service was the best! Our waitress was super friendly, funny and sweet. Food was great, but would have been better if there were more options. The restaurant itself is very nice.
Three of us shared the 36 oz rib eye with a variety of side dishes. It was delicious and perfect for us. Great meal and fun ambiance.
Waffles were soggy - other food was OK. Nice space but quality of food does not warrant a return visit.
Love the food but the service and organization needs work-inattentive waiter, multiple order and reservation mix ups. Food and atmosphere is great.
Food was good. Not sure if it was an isolated incident but there was a bit of a wait for service. The hollandaise sauce cane highly recommended and did not disappoint. Potatoes were cut a bit too big and got a bit overwhelming. Good place to visit for a brunch get together with friends.
Celebrating a new home with clients.
It was a busy morning. Our food was delayed but the server made sure to check up on it. The manager apologized for the delay and comped our drinks. They were very attentive. Lovely atmosphere and food was delicious!
Service was extremely slow !
Bad service, food that was not great and it was expensive.
Everything was cooked to perfection. Definitely recommend having a few sides, as portions are not huge. Beautiful plating and delicious. Many other restaurants in Toronto charge more and I am generally disappointed by something. Very satisfied with all the food, drinks and service at the Civic!
Great ambiance,service and food.
We enjoyed our experience very much and will be sure to go back.
Great Saturday brunch experience! Got a beautiful chocolate crossaint as the birthday treat from the restaurant. Thank you The Civic!
Service was very attentive, despite the place being very busy. Great food and good selection - we were there for brunch.
The table was right by the exit. Not very comfortable location.
Love the heritage building. Really wanted to love the experience but I must say the peameal bacon and eggs were really mediocre. They arrived cold and the bacon could not be cut with a knife making me wonder if it is prepared in advance and just (barely) warmed up. Requested eggs over easy and got them hard. Didn't wish to complain in the presence of a business contact.
Server was fantastic as was the receptionist.
Delightful from the moment we arrived. Service was very good and when we advised our server we had a time constraint she did a quietly magnificent job of keeping us on track. Food and wine were lovely and enthusiastically described by our other server. Only feedback, typical of our demographic is the sound level, which made conversation a bit of a challenge at times.
Fantastic dinner and top notch service. Our waiter was the perfect host.
Fantastic food for meat eaters and vegetarians alike. Best brunch spot!
Love the ambience of this historic building (high ceilings, exposed brick). Our waiter was incredibly attentive. We had brunch and my open face omelette was delicious. Great value as well for the dining experience. Although a bit out of the way and nothing really close nearby (I.e., for shopping, walking/browsing), would definitely come back again for bunch or dinner. The rooftop lounge has an amazing view too.
I’ve been to the civic many times and always had a pleasant experience but the one time I bring friends who haven’t been after I ranted and raved about it - it turned out to be an awful experience. The restaurant wasn’t busy by any means yet our waiter came by 3 separate times to say he’d be with us shortly to take our order despite us telling him we were ready to order the first time. Then when he finally came back he only took our drink order and then came back twice to have a couple of us repeat the drink order again because he forgot. And then finally 40 minutes later he took our food order. We also waited 45 minutes for our bill which was wrong twice and had to be reprinted. I love this hotel and I love this restaurant and would come back again but something was off that night and it showed. Disappointing.
Overall excellent but a few dishes namely the pancakes and trout from the brunch menu were overpriced.
Everything was great but it was very noisy and difficult to hear table mates.
Thank you for the great rating despite the noise level. I wish we had of know night of to move you or anything else we could have done to make your experience better.
Dinner with friends- Broadview Hotel has been redone beautifully. Checked out Cafe, Rooftop terrace and the private function Tower room- all were lovely. Service was also excellent with our waiter giving us good guidance (along with prices and “specials”). Noise level was also low which was very conducive to some good conversation with friends. All of our food choices were good but not spectacular and overall menu (and especially wine list) are a little pricey.
Thank you for your feedback and rating. We've added some new wine labels to ensure there is an option for everyone.
The food was delicious and our server, Kelly was outstanding!!
The food was excellent and the suggested wine pairings were spot on. Our host was quite accommodating and let me change my reservation when something came up. Our server was very friendly and on top of everything.
We are frequent customers at the Broadview. But for Sunday brunch, the music was too loud and everyone's voices rose to meet it. The server had to yell to be heard right next to us. When the music stopped for a few minutes, it was comfortable - but it didn't last. Please turn it down!
Also, please get in some lactose-free milk for the cappuccino and latte. the dairy-free options are no substitute - this is not a costly nor difficult option to have on hand.
The room is lovely. A mixture of seating, fabrics and surfaces. The room was busy and so quite noisy. Attentive service was appreciated. My friend had the Broadview breakfast with scrambled eggs toast and well cooked bacon as requested. I ordered the chicken salad; chicken, kale, dates, and chickpeas. They remembered to leave out the almond. A bowlful of especially tough Kate topped by 8 small cubes of chicken, about 10 chickpeas was not a chicken salad. For whatever reason I didn’t ask for something else and should have.
Atmosphere and service was great, but food was mediocre at best. Much better brunch places nearby.
I am done with Civic for sure! Customer service got a zero from me.
But the rooftop was soooo good because of the best customer service.
Paris was so good! But definitely not recommended the Civic, the food served cold as well.
That was disappointing.
The executive chef, Richard Singh, is one absolutely amazing fellow. We've (my partner and I) have been eating his dishes for four years and were happy to follow him to the Civic. They certainly chose the right man to command the kitchen and create an awesome experience. Fantastic!
As a hospitality professional I found the staffs care about our experience to be great and the food was delicious and exceeded expectations
Thank you for your feedback, see you again!
Family dinner, enjoyed by all! The food was amazing and the staff were friendly and down to earth.
Thank you so much, this is amazing feedback. We look forward to welcoming you back to The Civic.
Food was totally overpriced, and the taste was mediocre. There was a flickering light in the ceiling above our table which was very distracting.
Thank you for this feedback. We take pride in our food and service at The Civic. I wish we had known night of so that we could have tried to remedy any complaints. As always, your feedback is important to us and we are always open to it.
After the first round of drinks we were ignored as were the other tables around us. Unbeknownst to us, there was a wedding happening on the top floor which we didn’t find out about until after. Only aware that there was some private event, I asked the manager if there was something going on in the kitchen and if it had anything to do with the event. He dismissed my concerns and assured me that they paid attention to all their guests.
When our meals arrived after nearly an hour, only two of our guests were served. Their pasta was was hot but average to the taste. The ribeye showed up with only two small mildly warm slices, a slice of bread pudding and some burned rapini. The duck was cold and the lamb was on the verge of turning. The duck was sent back and the lamb was removed to be replaced by some scallops which were lightly seared leaving them cold and nervously unwanted. The duck returned warm after being in the microwave.
After the meals, the waitress put down some plates for something special from the kitchen for my birthday. It was almost another twenty minutes before this special desert arrived. Two separate plates of assorted gluten free deserts. I’m guessing we were supposed to serve ourselves with our individual forks? I was done.
It was clear that something was going on, that they were behind and that many of the tables around us were not being tended to. I regret not going somewhere else but it was my birthday and hoped that things would get back on track. They never did. When I called the waitress over, I was informed that the manager wasn’t on the floor. The Civic had let her down as much as they had let us down and I was greatly embarrassed in front of my guests.
Fifteen minutes later the manager showed up and I informed him that they had ruined my birthday and that we were not paying of anything. He didn't apologize and we left. The Civic has permanently lost my patronage and I will not be recommending this establishment to anyone.
We apologize for your negative experience, we did try and satisfy your concerns that evening. The event facility upstairs has a completely separate kitchen and staff. The menu was new and the food arrived in house just before your reservation, I assure you it is fresh. When proteins are ordered medium rare they arrive with a cool/warm red centre, the meat needs time to rest. As always, we take pride in our food and service, we strive to have our guests experience only the best at The Civic.
