The Cleveland Tontine
Very enjoyable Sunday lunch experience. Have been here for around 30 years when staying in North York. New ownership but attentive service excellent & most importantly food to die for
Excellent service from the staff and the food was extremely good.
Excellent food for the lunch menu, and very good value. Lovely ambiance in dining room with log fire .
Food and service were both outstanding, the restaurant was very busy which made it a bit noisy however this did not detract from the excellent service
Great staff and excellent food.Cosy by the big fireplace.
We thought the place was lovely and the food good, a few things spoilt our evening . Firstly the service was poor and slow we had 2 people in our party waiting for utensils whilst the other two had their food and one person's sweet didn't arrive we had to ask for it. And secondly we had a lovely cup of coffee at the end of our meal but we're not offered a refill. Also it was sad to see so many wilting plants throughout the restaurant area. The head waiter was very good and attentive but unfortunately some of his juniors were less on the ball. Shame.
A very pleasant lunch. Notwithstanding its proximity to the A19 it was nice and quiet in he dining room.

Great large room and bathroom, food was excellent, staff were friendly, excellent customer service.
Will definitely stay and dine there again.
we like it here, it make the experiance really special, in stead of just a pub/restaurant and the Staff are very friendly, see you soon.
Had an amazing evening for the Burn's night celebration
All staff were attentive from the minute we walked through the door. The food was excellent and so was the service.
Fantastic! Wasn't so keen on the location on our approach with it being so close to the A19 but you don't really notice the traffic noise indoors. Very warm welcome, lovely bar area with open fires. Lovely setting for Sunday lunch. Couldn't fault the food and the service was extremely courteous and attentive. Highly recommend
Lovely venue for afternoon tea on a dull, gloomy January day. Enjoyed it from start to finish.
Very welcoming, good service, super food, reasonable prices, friendly and lovely environment. We shall come again!
Always nice ambience and service much improved over last 3 months!
Lovely setting let down by poor quality of food which is overpriced.
Will not be using this venue again
Excellent service and food exceptional,
Although it was quiet being so close after Xmas we were well looked after , seafood starter was excellent followed by a chateaubriand to die for, chocolate indulgence to finish all accompanied by a nice bottle of Chablis.
We will be back.
Excellent food and service, would definitely come back.
Fab food. Exceptional service. Very very impressed with the barman’s knowledge of wine. I told him just what I liked and the wine he recommended was one of the nicest I had in some time. And I’m fussy. Nothing was too much trouble we were looked after from start too finish.
Lovely surroundings and fantastic staff. The care taken for a guest with an egg allergy was superb. Food, tea, and coffee were delicious.
Superb food and atmosphere and the service is outstanding. Love this place. Always impressed with everything they do.
Food good. Would have appreciated a little more meat for the Sunday lunch main course. Staff extremely welcoming.
Lovely restaurant, well looked after, a little disappointed with the seafood starter, most expensive on the menu but very little on the plate. Main was lovely had a great evening overall.
Warm welcome, great service, delicious food. Open log fire was a delight.
Excellent Sunday lunch. Friendly and attentive staff.
Excellent service, fabulous food, great attention to detail and our waiter was outstanding.
Outstanding as always. Service is superb and quality of food amazing.
Very good meal, food quality top notch, good value for money.
Only complaint was dining room was cold, coal fire was ok but did not warm dining room up, needed radiators on to provide a nice warm atmosphere.
Lovely presented dishes, although portions very small. Taste of food is good. Looking at price-quality it is too expensive. Also asked for the Market menu, but said they didn't serve it?
Excellent food and attentive service. The staff were excellent and throughly enjoyed our experience celebrating my daughters 18th birthday
This was our first visit to The Cleveland Tontine and it certainly met our expectations.
From being met at reception to finalising the bill at the end it was a lovely evening.
The food was fabulous and staff took the time to explain dishes and engage in conversation with us.
This will certainly be a place we visit again both together and with extended family and are looking forward to the festive season menus.
Our thanks goes out to everyone who made the experience memorable.
Amazing menu , couldn’t fault the food one bit and the service was outstanding
Had Sunday lunch, beef was amazing but the gravy let the full thing down it tasted horrible. The veg and roasties were also great.
A cut above the other provenance inns chain of gastropubs TheTontine is beginning to regain former glories. Very good food nicely presented and attentive staff. Excellent Sunday lunch easy parking and modestly priced
Very nice food and building. Noise from the A19 seems to have reduced with the addition of fence panels since the last time I was here. The close proximity of tables to each other (or just noisy diners?) spoils for me what would be an excellent dining experience.
p.s. more vegetarian/vegan options please
Absolutely Great food and outstanding service service. Probably a bit too pricey but definitely worth it for a night out for a special occasion.
Overpriced for the quality of the food.
Poor service began with the waitress pouring the wine all over the table. No apology, and only a feeble attempt to wipe it up. Poorly dressed staff didn't do the surroundings justice. I was supprised to be led down a narrow staircase to our table. I'm not sure if this was even the main restaurant. Our table for two was sandwiched between two other tables, leg room was minimal. Conversations on the other tables was a distraction due to the close proximity of the tables. The food was average from a restraunt this standard. Overall disappointed as I had heard so much praise over the years.
I had dined here a few months ago and had the most incredible steak, probably the best I had ever tasted. Returning on Friday 21 September for my wife's birthday, I ordered the steak again. As before, it was a rib eye, which is among my favourite cuts. This one, however was full of grizzle and sinew. When asked about the meal, the waiter could see I was struggling to get through it. He said it was a characteristic of the meat and although offered another steak, I left it at that, not wanting to make a scene. I am mad with myself for not challenging his comment, because I enjoy fat in a rib eye, but this was definitely not fat.
Although my wife's chicken was cooked to perfection, the downside is I will not be returning.
Overall a very good experience, the food was very good and great value for money. The reason for not outstanding is the level of service. The greeting was excellent and we were shown to our table very quickly, given a wine list and a menu but then............ a bit of a wait. Again when I asked for the bill it took some time for it to appear.
Having said that I would definitely recommend the Cleveland Tontine for an everyday dining experience or even a special occasion. So much so in fact that we are going to book a night at the hotel so we can both enjoy the experience and explore the surrounding area.
