The Cleveland Tontine
Incredible food, definitely worth the 2 AA rosettes! Service perfectly balanced, relaxed but attentive
We had a great Sunday roast with the our family of 4, and they let our dog sit under the table in the lounge, as advertised. Excellent food and excellent, friendly service.
We have been wanting to visit The Tontine for over 15 years and it didn’t disappoint!
Amazing staff and service, great food and lovely surroundings.
Would definitely recommend this place and we will be visiting again soon.
Really nice food and wonderful attentive staff. Would recommend.
I chose to go to the Tontine as I used to go there as a child with my parents and I wanted to show my friend how lovely it is.
We received a warm welcome on arrival and we were seated in the bar area and we ordered drinks. The waiter who saw to us was wonderful. Very polite and helpful, friendly but professional.
We moved into the restaurant and had a table by the window which was lovely and we ordered our lunch. As it was a special occasion we order the Chateaubriand for our main course which was probably the best I have ever had. The starters were also very nice. I had the Smoked Duck with hazelnuts and rhubarb and my friend had the beetroot & fennel risotto. Again the service was perfect.
Our desserts did not disappoint and I had the lemon posset with raspberry coulis and my friend had Affogato which she told me was fabulous.
Having worked in the hospitality business for over 30 years I suppose I am quite picky about where I eat but I have nothing but praise for the Tontine and we will certainly be back soon
Beautiful place. Excellent service. Unfortunately the main meal was over seasoned with too much salt. I did mention this after my meal and did receive a sorry.
Amazing from start to finish!! And thank you to Alex, who looked after us.
Very nice Sunday lunch with excellent service. Food was lovely although one of us had a lot of fat on beef. One of us had chicken in forestiere sauce and said it was absolutely delicious. One of us had whitebait starter and it was best he can ever remember having. Lovely ambience in the bistro and you would never know it was so close to a main road. We will definitely return.
We eat out a lot and this is easily our favourite restraunt. The ambience, the food and the service are all excellent.
Very pleasent staff and good ambience . Delicious food.Nothing to be critical of !
Spoiled for choice with the menu, and the set menu was excellent value for money. I had the risotto followed by the sea bass and both were cooked to perfection. Lovely selection of drinks and beautiful atmosphere in the lounge whilst waiting for our table. Staff were very polite and courteous, and made the experience even better
Food was lovely, a little on the expensive side but really good quality ingredients however the service could have been better - drinks not topped up, ordered drinks that didn’t arrive and a fairly long wait for mains but maybe a one off as I’m sure they’d had a very busy Sunday service!
Best Sunday lunch I have ever had!! It was perfection!! Staff very polite and pleasant I would definately recommend this wonderful restaurant
Good Sunday lunch....excellent service....apart from Luke warm carrots and parsnips all good
Lovely lunch and brilliant staff! I had made a specific seating request to make a family member more comfortable and they were brilliant in accommodating this - thank you!
We (a party of 6) really enjoyed ourselves. On arrival we would have appreciated an aperitif upstairs in front of the fire in a more relaxing way. The small bar downstairs where we had pre lunch drinks has slippy high leather bar stools alright for youngsters but not so grand for the 60/70+. The food was very good, my whitebait starter was enough with good sized whitebait well cooked. Fish soup very tasty, not thick enough, and i like my fish submerged in the sauce (not placed on top) and served with a thick rouille sauce, grated Gruyere or Parmesan cheese, along with garlic toast or croutons. (traditional Bouillabaisse) For dessert ice cream was yummy. Yes we will go back as a party or a couple. Loved that you didn't get chucked out as we had a few more drinks and a bit of craic.
Very enjoyable Sunday lunch experience. Have been here for around 30 years when staying in North York. New ownership but attentive service excellent & most importantly food to die for
Excellent service from the staff and the food was extremely good.
Excellent food for the lunch menu, and very good value. Lovely ambiance in dining room with log fire .
Food and service were both outstanding, the restaurant was very busy which made it a bit noisy however this did not detract from the excellent service
Great staff and excellent food.Cosy by the big fireplace.
We thought the place was lovely and the food good, a few things spoilt our evening . Firstly the service was poor and slow we had 2 people in our party waiting for utensils whilst the other two had their food and one person's sweet didn't arrive we had to ask for it. And secondly we had a lovely cup of coffee at the end of our meal but we're not offered a refill. Also it was sad to see so many wilting plants throughout the restaurant area. The head waiter was very good and attentive but unfortunately some of his juniors were less on the ball. Shame.
A very pleasant lunch. Notwithstanding its proximity to the A19 it was nice and quiet in he dining room.
Dave and Sue York
Great large room and bathroom, food was excellent, staff were friendly, excellent customer service.
Will definitely stay and dine there again.
we like it here, it make the experiance really special, in stead of just a pub/restaurant and the Staff are very friendly, see you soon.
Had an amazing evening for the Burn's night celebration
All staff were attentive from the minute we walked through the door. The food was excellent and so was the service.
Fantastic! Wasn't so keen on the location on our approach with it being so close to the A19 but you don't really notice the traffic noise indoors. Very warm welcome, lovely bar area with open fires. Lovely setting for Sunday lunch. Couldn't fault the food and the service was extremely courteous and attentive. Highly recommend
Lovely venue for afternoon tea on a dull, gloomy January day. Enjoyed it from start to finish.
Always nice ambience and service much improved over last 3 months!
Lovely setting let down by poor quality of food which is overpriced.
Will not be using this venue again
Excellent service and food exceptional,
Although it was quiet being so close after Xmas we were well looked after , seafood starter was excellent followed by a chateaubriand to die for, chocolate indulgence to finish all accompanied by a nice bottle of Chablis.
We will be back.
Excellent food and service, would definitely come back.
Fab food. Exceptional service. Very very impressed with the barman’s knowledge of wine. I told him just what I liked and the wine he recommended was one of the nicest I had in some time. And I’m fussy. Nothing was too much trouble we were looked after from start too finish.
Lovely surroundings and fantastic staff. The care taken for a guest with an egg allergy was superb. Food, tea, and coffee were delicious.
Superb food and atmosphere and the service is outstanding. Love this place. Always impressed with everything they do.
Food good. Would have appreciated a little more meat for the Sunday lunch main course. Staff extremely welcoming.
Lovely restaurant, well looked after, a little disappointed with the seafood starter, most expensive on the menu but very little on the plate. Main was lovely had a great evening overall.
Warm welcome, great service, delicious food. Open log fire was a delight.
Excellent Sunday lunch. Friendly and attentive staff.
