Friday - Saturday: 12:00 - 14:30, 18:30 - 21:30
Sunday: 12:00 - 14:30, 18:30 - 21:00
Excellent Sunday lunch. Friendly and attentive staff.
Excellent service, fabulous food, great attention to detail and our waiter was outstanding.
Outstanding as always. Service is superb and quality of food amazing.
Very good meal, food quality top notch, good value for money.
Only complaint was dining room was cold, coal fire was ok but did not warm dining room up, needed radiators on to provide a nice warm atmosphere.
Lovely presented dishes, although portions very small. Taste of food is good. Looking at price-quality it is too expensive. Also asked for the Market menu, but said they didn't serve it?
Excellent food and attentive service. The staff were excellent and throughly enjoyed our experience celebrating my daughters 18th birthday
This was our first visit to The Cleveland Tontine and it certainly met our expectations.
From being met at reception to finalising the bill at the end it was a lovely evening.
The food was fabulous and staff took the time to explain dishes and engage in conversation with us.
This will certainly be a place we visit again both together and with extended family and are looking forward to the festive season menus.
Our thanks goes out to everyone who made the experience memorable.
Amazing menu , couldn’t fault the food one bit and the service was outstanding
Had Sunday lunch, beef was amazing but the gravy let the full thing down it tasted horrible. The veg and roasties were also great.
A cut above the other provenance inns chain of gastropubs TheTontine is beginning to regain former glories. Very good food nicely presented and attentive staff. Excellent Sunday lunch easy parking and modestly priced
Very nice food and building. Noise from the A19 seems to have reduced with the addition of fence panels since the last time I was here. The close proximity of tables to each other (or just noisy diners?) spoils for me what would be an excellent dining experience.
p.s. more vegetarian/vegan options please
Absolutely Great food and outstanding service service. Probably a bit too pricey but definitely worth it for a night out for a special occasion.
Overpriced for the quality of the food.
Poor service began with the waitress pouring the wine all over the table. No apology, and only a feeble attempt to wipe it up. Poorly dressed staff didn't do the surroundings justice. I was supprised to be led down a narrow staircase to our table. I'm not sure if this was even the main restaurant. Our table for two was sandwiched between two other tables, leg room was minimal. Conversations on the other tables was a distraction due to the close proximity of the tables. The food was average from a restraunt this standard. Overall disappointed as I had heard so much praise over the years.
I had dined here a few months ago and had the most incredible steak, probably the best I had ever tasted. Returning on Friday 21 September for my wife's birthday, I ordered the steak again. As before, it was a rib eye, which is among my favourite cuts. This one, however was full of grizzle and sinew. When asked about the meal, the waiter could see I was struggling to get through it. He said it was a characteristic of the meat and although offered another steak, I left it at that, not wanting to make a scene. I am mad with myself for not challenging his comment, because I enjoy fat in a rib eye, but this was definitely not fat.
Although my wife's chicken was cooked to perfection, the downside is I will not be returning.
Overall a very good experience, the food was very good and great value for money. The reason for not outstanding is the level of service. The greeting was excellent and we were shown to our table very quickly, given a wine list and a menu but then............ a bit of a wait. Again when I asked for the bill it took some time for it to appear.
Having said that I would definitely recommend the Cleveland Tontine for an everyday dining experience or even a special occasion. So much so in fact that we are going to book a night at the hotel so we can both enjoy the experience and explore the surrounding area.
We thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience at The Tontine. Food was very good, served hot by very efficient and friendly staff. The dining room itself was really nicely set up with white linen table cloths, napkins and fresh flowers. I am puzzled as to why the restaurant is named "The Bistro" it is definitely a far cry from a bistro, it is much more than that.
Fab place, helpful staff , great food, nice atmosphere
Birthday meal a truly fabulous steak and an astonishingly good chocolate dessert.
It's not cheap to eat here but it is worth every penny
This is the 4th Sunday lunch we have enjoyed here in the last 11 months. We have to make a special trip as it’s not a local dining location for us, so it must be good!
Excellent, perfect for our special celebration. Food and surroundings were worth the drive.
Really enjoyed the Sunday lunch here food was amazing Veg was all from their own garden/green house , took my partner for his birthday we were placed next to an original feature fire place was so lovely
We had Sunday lunch and the roast vegetables where overcooked to the point of being burnt , the cauliflower was also overcooked the point of being soggy and watery. We had to ask for the yorkshire puddings which were part of the dish. the resteraunt wasn't busey.
Rooms excellent and excellent value, food very good, breakfast service excellent, evening bar service as there was no dedicated bar staffing, we had to go to to find a member of staff every time we needed more drinks, including ringing the reception bell, restaurant dinner service had waiting staff, but not attentive / focused on checking to see if we needed anything and again we had of our way to get the attention of waiting staff. Overall the service issues didn't spoil the experience but did get a bit frustrating. Bar staffed and waiting staff scanning the tables for guests needing something would be the final ingredient.
Overall the quality of the food was good.
The service left a lot to be desired.
At the prices charged I expect a lot higher quality
We took some friends out for a special occasion and so thought the Tontine would be a nice treat. The food was beautifully presented and beautifully cooked. However, I found the menu tailored very much towards the fish and seafood diner and the starters for me, were limiting, not even a soup to choose and so I did without. It was a lovely venue and everyone enjoyed their meals and the staff were very helpful and easily on hand for wine and other drinks. I would definitely recommend the Tontine to friend however I would advise them to check the menu before they came just to make sure it was to their liking.
Booked Tontine for our wedding anniversary. Went a la carte and the food was world class. Service was very effective and me and the wife really enjoyed the whole experience.
Will definitely book again and recommend to friends and family.
Thanks to all at the Tontine as I have kept the Mrs happy for another 12 months.
Poor service, aggressive bar staff, warm food and the toilets were broken so a very unpleasant aroma all evening. Had notified a birthday celebration and not one person acknowledged the fact
Overall very disappointing and will take my future business elsewhere
Overall we had a lovely meal but the service is not as good as it used to be. We were always made to feel special and welcome; the staff were always very well informed about the menu and wine. However, this is no longer the case.
Although the starter and main were delicious we were rather disappointed with the cheese board. As my partner said “the chef is trying too hard”!
It has not put us off coming back but you need to do better!
They've extended the car park since our last visit.
I have not been to the Tontine for ten years . The new owners have tidied it all up , from the studied chaos of the previous owners , the food was good ; rabbit terrine was well judged and roasted artichokes full of flavour .so far so good . But the place was half empty and the service , even so, inattentive .No butter with the bread amuse bouche in cups with no saucers (eventually remedied for the table next to us ) and the whole feel of the bistro a bit dated and lacking in atmosphere. On the whole not expensive and good tasty food but something lacking. Not sure I will go back but might in due course as it may have been an off night
We enjoyed our visit to the restaurant to celebrate our daughter's graduation at Durham Uni -the experience was brilliant, the food and service likewise. A special mention for a very interesting winelist with many choices which were different from the average without large ticket prices.
We had Fathers Day Sunday lunch, we had expected it to be a proper restaurant, but it is a bistro.
The menu had a good selection of Sunday lunch items , the food arrived reasonably quickly and we were pleased with our selections.
Our only complaint was that my wife ordered roast beef, it was very good apart from the fact that it sat on a large smear of mustard, she does not like mustard and had to scrape it off. Mustard should be an option !!
How this restaurant does not have a Michelin star I dont know. Beast food for ages excellent service.
First visit and not disappointed, the food was lovely and the staff friendly and professional.
Splendid as usual. We are always impressed by the attentive star and imaginative menu.
This was my first visit to The Tontine and I had high expectations. On arrival the staff were very friendly and took our drinks order very promptly. There was a good menu selection and I chose to select from the set menu. The starter did take quite a long time to arrive but it was delicious and worth the wait. The main course was equally as tasty. No room for desert!
The restaurant had a relaxing atmosphere and there was well attended for a Tuesday lunchtime.
The only negative I have is that there needs to be better signage to the entrance of The Tontine as it wasn't clear and we overshot meaning we had to go back onto the A19 and back-track around!
Overall I thoroughly enjoyed my visit and would return in the future.
Amazing Evening as always, Libby and her staff really looked after us. The food was sublime, I started with Scallops and had rib eye for main, delicious. Every aspect of the night was spot on, from atmosphere, service and the quality of the food. Thank you again to everyone who looked after us on Saturday night.
Stopped in on Sunday evening on our way from Northumberland to Buckinghamshire by car. An excellent meal in very pleasant surroundings. Very good value for money. Cannot recommend The Tontine highly enough. Hope to be able to stay there in the future and check out the breakfasts.
It took 30 mins for someone to take our food order. The portion sizes were small considering the price. Main course was not what was on menu, very disappointed, we didn’t stay for desert.
