How this restaurant does not have a Michelin star I dont know. Beast food for ages excellent service.
First visit and not disappointed, the food was lovely and the staff friendly and professional.
Splendid as usual. We are always impressed by the attentive star and imaginative menu.
This was my first visit to The Tontine and I had high expectations. On arrival the staff were very friendly and took our drinks order very promptly. There was a good menu selection and I chose to select from the set menu. The starter did take quite a long time to arrive but it was delicious and worth the wait. The main course was equally as tasty. No room for desert!
The restaurant had a relaxing atmosphere and there was well attended for a Tuesday lunchtime.
The only negative I have is that there needs to be better signage to the entrance of The Tontine as it wasn't clear and we overshot meaning we had to go back onto the A19 and back-track around!
Overall I thoroughly enjoyed my visit and would return in the future.
Amazing Evening as always, Libby and her staff really looked after us. The food was sublime, I started with Scallops and had rib eye for main, delicious. Every aspect of the night was spot on, from atmosphere, service and the quality of the food. Thank you again to everyone who looked after us on Saturday night.
Stopped in on Sunday evening on our way from Northumberland to Buckinghamshire by car. An excellent meal in very pleasant surroundings. Very good value for money. Cannot recommend The Tontine highly enough. Hope to be able to stay there in the future and check out the breakfasts.
It took 30 mins for someone to take our food order. The portion sizes were small considering the price. Main course was not what was on menu, very disappointed, we didn’t stay for desert.
We had anticipated a good service and we most certainly found it. We shall bring our friends for lunch in a couple if weeks time.
This may sound strange, but the tiled floor would have been very suited for the kitchen, not the restaurant. Food was good, service was OK, considering the restaurant was not at all busy, the waiting staff were not very attentive. I expected to be offered coffee in the lounge, but was left sitting in the restaurant for some considerable time before having to ask for the bill. Maybe my expectations were too high?
Very much enjoyed predinner drinks in upstairs bar and then an excellent relaxed dinner in bistro dining. Service was attentive, but not obtrusive, wines good choice and quality at fair price, food excellent. Will return again soon.
Booked online, which was quick and easy. Service was great, staff friendly, attentive and courteous. Everyone enjoyed dining in the pleasant and ambient surroundings of the Tontine.
Menu was limited not much to choose from expensive ,portions small to ,so dont go hungary ,worth a visit for a special occasion .
We have been to the Tontine previously for afternoon tea and were very impressed with the quality and quantity of the tea. Hence our daughter treated us to an evening meal here. The service was excellent and the staff friendly and attentive but not 'in your face'. The meal was perfectly cooked and the ambience relaxing.
Lovely restaurant, friendly staff & fabulous food. Will definitely visit again.
Really enjoyed our meal there, mixed seafood starter was amazing and the lamb main course so tasty and tender. Good and friendly service.
Date with my husband. Haven’t been for a long time, decided to try it. Staff friendly, food good; restaurant quiet so atmosphere lacking a little. Cocktail bar serves limited cocktails, wine list good.
This was a first time visit we have driven passed on many occasions and decided to book a table for my 60th birthday.
From the out set staff were friendly and attentive. My wife does not drink but staff made sure she had something special. Food was excellent and well presented. I loved the Happy Birthday message and candle which was added to my dessert. All in all a brilliant evening and I look forward to going again.
I can't rate the Tontine too highly. Of particular note is the service given by the staff. On every visit I have been impressed by the menu, always items appear that are not often featured elsewhere.
We went in a blizzard & were welcomed to a roaring log fire.
The dining room is downstairs with rather low ceiling & a bit soulless
Food good but service slow & it was pricey
I preferred the Tontine of 30 years ago... then onto The Kirk
We had a meal for my mother's 88th Birthday there as it was an extremely convenient location. Service was great, food was excellent - steak delicious. The bar and the restaurant lovely and warm on a very cold night. Highly recommended.
We started the evening with my wife needing her finger plastered to due catching it in her broken chair - I wish I'd took her home there and then. How any chef could happily send out the miserable dishes which were extremely over priced shows he must love money rather than food. The starters were OK, the mains were well average, the steak and chips was £32 and basically that's all it was other than a watery au poivre sauce, then the big treat -my venison, I'm not sure there was enough of it to be weighed by the ounce but my three two pence price size bits accompanied by some crispy somethings wouldn't fill a mouse, yet it was proudly put in front of me at the cost of £25 - I obviously raised my concern and was brought three more tuppeny bits of venison out (after my food was eaten) luckily there was some "juis " left as it was so bland and watery I'd not used it all.
We declined deserts as common sense told me it was just like telling a robber he'd missed the money in my sock.
Will never go there again.
Loved the whole experience. Good menu choices, excellent service and beautiful surroundings and decor.
The welcome and the staff were absolutely excellent !
Alex the maitre d' hotel is superlative in all respects.
Imaginative starters in nouvelle cuisine style and beautifully prepared main courses.
A lovely ambience which I am happy to recommend !
Great food especially the puddings. Lovely atmosphere. We would definitely go back
Excellent cuisine, superb desert what more to say to get to 50!,,
Beautiful Hotel, Food was amazing , definitely will return
Great good along with friendly service makes it relaxing
We had a very nice family Sunday lunch in the downstairs Bistro. The menu is interesting and the food was excellent. There was a lovely blazing log fire and the overall ambience was great. Given the quality of the food, the price was reasonable, though the very extensive wine list was on the pricey side.
Excellent Sunday lunch, good service in a nice environment. Would recommend
We booked our meal as a surprise, We received superb service on Saturday evening. We really enjoyed it.
All the staff were so polite and very approachable with any requests. Food was absolutely beautiful and the surroundings and lovely atmosphere within the bar and restaurant were stunning. The staff made us feel very welcome, we will certainly be going back - no question about it.
We will be recommending this 5* to friends.
I feel the staff should be recognised for the service.
Service was a little slow. Long time between starter and main and end of meal and getting the bill. Some items taken from table when finished with, others inexplicably left. The food, however, was excellent and I will definitely give them a second chance
This was my favourite place for a special occasion with my partner.
It’s been a long time since my last visit & lots has changed , it’s been loving upgraded and was even better than ever.
We stayed in the coach house room and it was beautiful, the huge bathroom was fantastic.
Service, food , the setting etc was perfect.
As always...excellent food, wine and service. A special mention for Alex and his team...absolutely great service first class advice on wine choice a truly first class team who made us so welcome. Thankyou
The Cleveland Tontine has a lot of historical character which it wears easily.
We were made very welcome for our small family lunch. The manager offered to set us a table in the main dining room rather than the bistro when he observed one of our party might have some difficulty with stairs.
My nephew said his steak was the best he had enjoyed in a while. We will certainly go back when we want to dine well in comfort with a little luxurey
I have visited the Tontine occasionally over almost 50 years! Years ago it was a brown-soup-and-gravy type of place. Then the McCoys bought it and it became great. I went last week for lunch to see if it was still as good. Lovely building, friendly service. But almost empty at lunchtime when it should be buzzing. Pretty much revolting 'Provencal fish soup' with a base which tasted of burned onions, no vegetables or herbs, a few mussels (some of them had not opened), a slab of white fish, a rouille with not enough garlic, and bland slices of toasted bread. Then a lemon tart with thick-ish pastry which tasted mass-produced, with a nice blueberry sorbet and a nice blueberry compote. Espresso bland. Wine expensive. I am sorry, but it appears to have become the contemporary equivalent of a brown-soup-and gravy place! It needs a much smaller menu and fresh local ingredients.
Excellent meal and service, we all loved the evening at The Cleveland Tontine
We went Christmas eve. Hugely disappointed. Once again got put in the conservatory .which could be an annex anywhere. Five of us on a table suitable for four. Obviously cramped. There were numerous tables not used in the main restaurant with its log fire and Christmas tree . Why be stuck in the annex as I call it. The ambience was nil. Such a huge disappointment as I've been a huge fan of this place over the years. The food was extremely mediocre for the price and the service also was poor.
Expecting a special start to our Christmas experience was a huge disappointment
Good food and attentive staff in relaxing surroundings.
wonderful evening, excellent food. The only down side was when they included drinks on my bill which we had not had.
