The Coal Shed
Our method at The Coal Shed is simple: the highest quality ingredients, sourced as locally as possible and expertly cooked. As well as a seasonal à la carte menu, we also offer daily specials, a great value express lunch and pre theatre menu plus Brighton's favourite Sunday Sharing Roasts.
Could have been better
Lovely atmosphere, top service & steaks. Can recommend to any one enjoying high quality meat! A bit pricey but hey, you got to treat yourself from time to time!
fantastic food and service 100% recommend to every body
Absolutely wonderful food, ambiance and service. Definitely would go again.
Great service and the food was delicious. The staff were very helpful and informative and made us feel very welcome from the time we entered the restaurant until we left.
Incredible steaks and great cocktails. 4th time eating here and it never disappoints
A lovely meal as always! My favourite place to eat in Brighton. The steak was cooked beautifully and service was impeccable
Really lovely evening starting with the welcome! The meal was excellent as was the service.
What a wonderful evening. The venue is beautifully designed and the lighting and audio made the perfect ambient atmosphere for a Sunday evening meal.
The service was exceptional. We were given a very warm welcome and attention was given to my dietary needs without any fuss or issues.
The food was delicious for both myself, a very fussy vegetarian with allergies and for my partner who enjoys trying new flavour combinations and meat and fish.
The wine suggestions were spot on as well.
Overall, a really fantastic evening which I couldn't recommend enough to anyone else.
Had a wonderful time celebrating a birthday. The food was delicious and the staff were attentive and friendly which made the experience very enjoyable. We will definitely go back!
Lovely food and decent wine list, enjoyable evening
The staff were so friendly & looked after us very well.
The food was amazing, would definitely return again.
Loved it. 1st year wedding anniversary dinner, so glad we choose the Coal shed Brighton.
The service was very good there was always someone available and they were checking on us enough but also not too much. The food was really good too although I would like to have a wider range of sides available with the steaks that are vegetables. Only thing I would change was that we were sat on a two table in the window which was lovely but the table of four next to us was a bit too close and meant us and the staff had to squeeze past the table to get past and also felt slightly like you were being listened to as well by the guests on the table next to us so it should be slightly further away.
Warm reception on arrival - well looked after by staff. Great menu.
Excellent food, somewhat noisy due to large table bookings
We arrived at 1pm on Monday to be greeted by the most friendly front of house / head waiter and barman who were both super friendly. The decor and ambiance were perfect for a quiet birthday lunch. We loved the menu and opted for scallops and shrimps as our starters - we were not disappointed! Followed by a whole bream and fish stew main course which was sent down after we’d asked for a short break - again, our tastebuds were sparkling with happiness. Considering we’d had a very light breakfast, we opted for 4 sides, but the portions were so generous, we could have made do with just 2. Sadly not enough room for dessert, so we shall definitely return and never walk by again with dropping in - even if just for a cocktail. Thoroughly recommended!
My wife and I visited for our Wedding Anniversary, Service and Meal were superb and would take some beating anywhere in the country let alone Brighton. But, there is always a small but, it was rather expensive for the little extras like the bottle of Prosecco at over £40. But that aside, we'll be back !!
Absolutely loved the sharing Sunday lunch, great ingredients and well cooked.
Could not fault the service.
Wine list is expensive that was a little bit over priced I would suggest
Was a little disappointed with dessert for the price.
Excellent service, really solid enjoyable cooking nice atmosphere and fair price. Bravo
Good food, friendly service. Great advice about the wine choices.
Pudding was great. Pork belly starter was tiny for the money and bland. Steak was OK, lacked flavour, disspaointng for the money. Service was good
Great food, nice and quiet for a Saturday afternoon
Very good choice and good cooked well, service was amazing
Lovely evening at The Coal Shed, table was ready when we arrived which was great. Service was first class. Slightly noisy big table towards back of the room but guess this can't be helped.
Food was cooked to perfection, great wine list and attentive but not obtrusive service. Would def come back. Def need to book to get in here being mid week we were not rushed off of our table but imagine if it were busier there are time limits on tables.
Service was excellent, even made an effort to give my partner special desert for her birthday. Lovely staff and the steaks are amazing. Always always always go for the tiger prawns as well.
Lovely meal with a friend. We had two fillet steaks, perfectly rare and shared chips and the cabbage sides with a lovely bottle of red. Perfect!
Lovely restaurant, amazing food! Stuff very friendly and even gave me a birthday dessert :)
We booked the coal shed to eat before an evening concert because they had an early bird menu/ pre theatre menu on the website advertising three courses for £20. It was clearly available as it was shown on the website when I booked.
When we sat down we were presented with the standard a la cart menu, i asked for the pre theater and was told, to my surprise, it was withdrawn. I showed the server and manager the webpage on my mobile phone browser, despite being there there were adamant it was withdrawn.
On the a la Carter menu starters averaged about £8 mains averaged £18 with sides averaging £4 and dessert £7.50. Clearly a material difference from an early bird/ pre theatre menu £20 compared to £33.50, a menu bai and switch too far.
The food was well cooked and presented and when the bill was presented our presupper drinks were deducted from the bill.
Sadly we’ll be more wary next time before booking at the Coal Shed. Once bitten twice shy
Wonderful staff especially our waitress. Fabulous food.
Wonderful lunch!! Found this charming restaurant while scrolling through TripAdvisor and we were not disappointed. We decided to take a day trip from London to Brighton and after strolling through The Lanes and visiting the Pier we were hungry. We arrived just as they were finishing their lunch service but the owner welcomed us with open arms. He was great fun! The food was delicious, well prepared and the perfect way to end our day in Brighton. Highly recommend.
Good service, nice steaks and it was very nice of them to give a free chocolate with a birthday message on a plate for my mum’s birthday!
Absolutely beautiful food and service !
And was treating to a surprise chocolate truffle for my birthday
Definetley coming back
Service was poor, I found the staff quite rude. The food was extremely overpriced; roast potatoes and Yorkshire pudding were over cooked, and the meat was quite fatty with a lot of bone. I would expect a superb quality roast for £20 a head, but this was poorer quality than the average roast I would get for approx £10 elsewhere
Lovely Sunday sharing roast for lunch - great cut of meat, generous portions, lovely staff
The food was fabulous!!! Definitely worth the money.
Good steakhouse. The meat was very tasty and the sides just as impressive. Nice setting as well. Would recommend to anyone visiting Brighton
Good service, good sides. Steak was utterly appalling. They say the steak is aged for 35 days. It was extremely chewy and not at all juicy to eat. Probably the worst steak I’ve eaten. My friend also had the same so didn’t see the point in returning them! Avoid this place if you want a good steak.
We've been to the Coal Shed quite a few times over the years, a deux or, as on Friday lunchtime, for a friends' get-together long lazy lunch. It's always been very good, but this time the food felt an order of magnitude better even than hitherto. My friends both had steak and I was alarmed to hear that they wanted it well done - I anticipated chef push-back - none came; both friends ate steaks cooked to their individual taste perfection.
Here is the point I'd not have anticipated: I am a vegetarian (like, forever, man), and I had one of the best meals of the year. Seriously well considered food, flavours and textures that complement and surprise - here is a chef who loves the people who eat in his restaurant, whether or not they share his love of steak. I wanted to kiss him. The only critique I'd suggest would be to name the dishes with less diffidence - I think mine was called "Various roots" or something! It entirely didn't do it justice. I'd have called it "Earthy desires" or somesuch. I'm quibbling. It was amazing. (And the chimichurri goes *really* well with it, just a tip there :-))
Expanding into Shoreditch hasn't diluted Coal Shed in Boyces Street. Brighton should be proud of it and I hope we send enough business to keep this great restaurant thriving. Thank you for a wonderful long lazy and delicious Friday lunch.
