The Coal Shed
Our method at The Coal Shed is simple: the highest quality ingredients, sourced as locally as possible and expertly cooked. As well as a seasonal à la carte menu, we also offer daily specials, a great value express lunch and pre theatre menu plus Brighton's favourite Sunday Sharing Roasts.
Very good choice and good cooked well, service was amazing
Service was excellent, even made an effort to give my partner special desert for her birthday. Lovely staff and the steaks are amazing. Always always always go for the tiger prawns as well.
Lovely meal with a friend. We had two fillet steaks, perfectly rare and shared chips and the cabbage sides with a lovely bottle of red. Perfect!
Lovely restaurant, amazing food! Stuff very friendly and even gave me a birthday dessert :)
Wonderful staff especially our waitress. Fabulous food.
Wonderful lunch!! Found this charming restaurant while scrolling through TripAdvisor and we were not disappointed. We decided to take a day trip from London to Brighton and after strolling through The Lanes and visiting the Pier we were hungry. We arrived just as they were finishing their lunch service but the owner welcomed us with open arms. He was great fun! The food was delicious, well prepared and the perfect way to end our day in Brighton. Highly recommend.
Good service, nice steaks and it was very nice of them to give a free chocolate with a birthday message on a plate for my mum’s birthday!
Absolutely beautiful food and service !
And was treating to a surprise chocolate truffle for my birthday
Definetley coming back
Service was poor, I found the staff quite rude. The food was extremely overpriced; roast potatoes and Yorkshire pudding were over cooked, and the meat was quite fatty with a lot of bone. I would expect a superb quality roast for £20 a head, but this was poorer quality than the average roast I would get for approx £10 elsewhere
Lovely Sunday sharing roast for lunch - great cut of meat, generous portions, lovely staff
The food was fabulous!!! Definitely worth the money.
Good steakhouse. The meat was very tasty and the sides just as impressive. Nice setting as well. Would recommend to anyone visiting Brighton
Good service, good sides. Steak was utterly appalling. They say the steak is aged for 35 days. It was extremely chewy and not at all juicy to eat. Probably the worst steak I’ve eaten. My friend also had the same so didn’t see the point in returning them! Avoid this place if you want a good steak.
We've been to the Coal Shed quite a few times over the years, a deux or, as on Friday lunchtime, for a friends' get-together long lazy lunch. It's always been very good, but this time the food felt an order of magnitude better even than hitherto. My friends both had steak and I was alarmed to hear that they wanted it well done - I anticipated chef push-back - none came; both friends ate steaks cooked to their individual taste perfection.
Here is the point I'd not have anticipated: I am a vegetarian (like, forever, man), and I had one of the best meals of the year. Seriously well considered food, flavours and textures that complement and surprise - here is a chef who loves the people who eat in his restaurant, whether or not they share his love of steak. I wanted to kiss him. The only critique I'd suggest would be to name the dishes with less diffidence - I think mine was called "Various roots" or something! It entirely didn't do it justice. I'd have called it "Earthy desires" or somesuch. I'm quibbling. It was amazing. (And the chimichurri goes *really* well with it, just a tip there :-))
Expanding into Shoreditch hasn't diluted Coal Shed in Boyces Street. Brighton should be proud of it and I hope we send enough business to keep this great restaurant thriving. Thank you for a wonderful long lazy and delicious Friday lunch.
Mostly steak on the menu, with some fish and a burger. Steak was cooked perfectly and tasted great. Venue itself was lovely and staff couldn’t have been hospitable. A highly enjoyable experience.
Service was very slow with a lack of knowledge from the staff with regards to the menu. We were told that there was no express menu, but no reason as to why, even though we were there on a Thursday at 6 pm. Just told that it wasn't on that night and the waiter didn't know why. Over priced.
Brilliant food and atmosphere. I had medium steak which was cooked to perfection. Loved mac 'n' cheese and grilled Cabbage. Recommended for special occasion. 👍👍👍👍👍
Took my brother for his birthday. We had an odd time for eating as we were seeing an early show so the restaurant was empty. However, the staff were so lovely, welcoming, didn’t rush us even though they stopped food 15 mins after we arrived. Our waiter was friendly, informative and gave me a few wines to choose from.
Would highly recommend as the food was delicious!!! Will definitely be visiting again.
Food was average, price does not match quality.
Best part of the meal was the cabbage, which considering the specialty is steak, isn't a compliment.
Excellent service and food absolutely disliked having to watch members of staff working on laptop and folding napkins whilst I was eating ..... please work elsewhere as it has put me off returning
The food was delicious and the kind waiter we had was lovely and we were very much looked after
The restaurant is really nicely decorated and you feel that it's quite special.
We ordered the yummy beef croquettes - could eat 100s of them and some oysters to start.
For mains we shared a chateaubriand between 3 of us with chips, mash, nachos and cheese and spinach. We also had a summer pudding and lime cheesecake to finish. The sauces for the steak weren't great, would have loved a gravy one! Apart from that it was yummy. A bit on the expensive side though!
The staff were amazing and gave us a wee surprise as it was a special anniversary for me and my boyfriend!
He enjoyed the food a lot, I thought the brioche bun on the crab roll was quite dense (I had to slice it in half along the bottom. The beef dripping chips were okay but not amazing.
Overall experience was lovely though, recommended the place to a stranger we got talking to on the day!
Fantastic Quality Food and very attentive staff.
First visit as we were in Brighton for the weekend and booked because of the great reviews and we weren’t disappointed.
Great restaurant. Our server was friendly and very attentive. Food is of a high quality, taste’s delicious and arrived to our table very quickly.
Would definitely recommend the onions rings as a side!
Excellent anniversary dinner, with great food and wine in a lovely setting. The porterhouse steak I consumed was prepared just right, and the 'mashed potato with burnt bits' was simply delicious!
Fantastic food. Great service. Beautiful environment.
Not up to London standards and the service very hit and miss depending on the server! Forgetting drink orders and bringing ketchup when asked for mustard etc. Cocktails and food were great though and based on that would definitely return. But as 12.5% added for service I would expect service to be amazing as only two tables busy including us at 3.30pm on a Tuesday!
The food was amazing and and the service excellent
It’s our second time at The Coal Shed and unfortunately we were disappointed. A restaurant that specialises in cooking meat on coals should be amazing at steaks, but it seems they do not know how to cook medium and instead like to do everything medium/rare, which is not what as requested.
It took a while to rectify without any real apology, service was slow and inattentive, and the quality of the steak, when finally cooked as asked, really wasn’t good and very under seasoned.
With so much restaurant choice in Brighton, all need to be on their game and the Coal Shed just isn’t up to scratch and needs much improvement.
This was a 5th anniversary meal - we had our first at the Coal Shed - and the staff on the phone were friendly and helpful. When we arrived, we were welcomed and given the table I had requested. Service was friendly and exemplary and help with choosing the wine was constructive and knowledgeable. The post dinner fudge was presented on a plate with "happy anniversary" piped. Overall a memorable experience! Thank you!
Had black Angus fillet with beef dripping chips and onion rings - delicious! Staff and service was good as well. Would definitely recommend it for any carnivores left in Brighton
This was our second visit but this time we had guests. All four of us were extremely pleased with the whole experience.
The steak was way over priced all you get is a bit of meat on the plate for£26 😂
Could not fault anything here the food was amazing and the staff were all fantastic and lovely
Took my foodie loving husband here for his birthday. We were both so impressed - food was outstanding. I’ve never tasted such an amazing heritage salad before it was so fresh. I had the prawns, perfect, and possibly one of the nicest chips ever! We even tasted the kids doughnuts with ice cream - oh my they were a delight. And the service was great - very friendly and welcoming. Definitely go back the next time we are in Brighton.
Our 3rd visit to the Coal Shed. Food was excellent, as was the service. Only thing that let this visit down for us was the seating. Although we booked about 2 months ago we were allocated a small table in the corner in the upstairs seating area so were not sat facing each other so this tarnished our meal out "for two". Also sat very close to a table of people out on a business evening on expenses (we heard this many times), so close to them it felt like we were almost on the same table. Being 6' 3" i had to fold myself into the corner seat and didn't bother getting up for the Gents until we had finished our meal. We will be back, but will be requesting a seat downstairs next time...
Amazing cocktail, delicious food and very helpful and friendly staff
Great food, amazing service, would definitely recommend.
Fantastic experience at The Coal Shed. I had previously read about the new restaurant in Brighton in an online article so was keen to check it out. My partner & I had oysters - delicious, big & fresh! Followed by starters which were creative & great produce. The steaks were delicious and perfectly cooked! The side of truffle Mac&cheese is heavenly, make sure you get it! We had a bottle of red which was recommended by our waiter, the service was fantastic and seamless. Very happy with our meal at The Coal Shed and would return.
