I enjoyed my food but don't appreciate having to pay for all sides. Not one dish viewed would have been sufficient without sides. This provides misleading information about main courses. This led to the mains being way overpriced.
The food was however good, but not more than that.
We had one of the cheaper wines in the list, which was excellent.
Great ambience, UNBELIEVABLE STEAK - we had the chateaubriand & the alcohol is very reasonably priced from cocktails to Prosecco! The only thing I would like to see on the menu is skinny French fry chips as I don't like the big chunky ones but that's just personal preference...
Someone took our coats and seated us which was a good start, the starter was perfect really delicious, I really enjoyed the alternative stout beer and my steak was perfectly cooked with nice sides to augment. However our round table by the door was draughty and I think one of the staff let themselves down with their manner (whether they were having a bad day I don’t know) but when you pay that kind of money I don’t want to feel like I’m a chore, that’s going to lose you business even if the food is perfect. The other staff were generally attentive and pleasant but there was not that social interaction and fun I would expect of a place going higher end on the dining and prices. The dishes are expensive which is fine if they are excellent quality and in fairness they were pretty spot on, the only issue was the mains not being piping hot. Of course just my opinions but that’s what I left feeling. Great food overall but for the money and service a smidge if disappointment.
Simply a very delightful place to spend your anniversary in. Food was amazing and the service was excellent. Would definitely go again!
Really nice venue for a date night on a weekend away. Very tasty food and really friendly service.
Excellent venue, despite drab surroundings.
Wanted to try as we are in London on NY Eve - have now reserved at their Tower Bridge venue.
We met for a pre-Christmas lunch. The approach to the restaurant is not very prepossessing but the welcome was warm and the decor modern and fine. Service was excellent throughout and the food was very good. A definite hit and I would happily return any time
Absolutely brilliant food! Best steak ever!!! And service was attentive but not over bearing. Would definitely recommend to everyone, the cod was lovely as well so not just for meat lovers! Incredible drinks and cocktails as well. Thank you all so much for such an amazing meal.
Although I have put outstanding as a guide for the food and the evening, one very very small complaint and that is for a side dish of potatoes fried and coated with cheese arrived on the wrong side of warm, which was a shame but did not stop us eating them and enjoying the taste it is just they could have been a bit hotter.
Excellent! Will defiantly be returning, Great service and amazing food
Great lunch with lovely attentive service in a super setting. Warm and friendly. Loved the food despite a couple of items missing off the menu. Certainly the best steak house in Brighton. We loved it and will be back.
The restaurant was FREEZING. Really spoiled our evening. The food was good (but not great) on arrival but was soon cold given the temperature in the restaurant. For the prices charged they really need to address this issue. Overall, poor value. We wouldn't return in winter.
Fabulous Sunday lunch, excellent service. A thoroughly enjoyable afternoon.
We had a sharing Sunday lunch for 2. (We were also pleasantly surprised to learn that they are quite flexible with what they offer - they said we could really have what we want, we just have that much to spend.) We went for the roast lamb shoulder and it was unbelievable. The best roast I think I've ever had! Every element was cooked beautifully and we even treated ourselves to a dessert, which we never normally do. The service was amazing and so warm and the atmosphere was just the same. Very highly recommend!
this place is AWESOME
Despite being early (18.15) the event was enjoyed by all.
Meeting with good friends on a Monday calls for lunch, somewhere you can relax, knowing that the service is going to be just right you can't go wrong with the Coal Shed. Even if you are not a big meat eater (the steaks are to die for) there are plenty of alternatives including fish on the menu. As always, a lovely experience. Thank you Coal Shed Team - our visit was on Monday 25 November.
Amazing food and cocktails! The best steak I’ve ever had. Really pleasant ambiance and service was fantastic.
Fab Sunday roast. Great service and a nice atmosphere. Food really good value (it’s sooo good!) but wine a smidge on the expensive side.
Excellent as always in every way love the subtle refurb a must when in Brighton
Thanks to all
This was our third meal at The Coal Shed and as always, the food was amazing and the service was faultless. The staff are always very efficient and the food is absolutely delicious. We don't live in Brighton, but whenever we visit we make a point of booking a table here.
Great service, wonderful food
We enjoyed our overall evening, however we had to wait 45 minutes between our starter and main, when tables around us that arrived later got their food quicker, so we believe our mains order was likely to have been forgotten about. The diners that were sat next to us had clearly had a large amount to drink therefore they were very loud and in such an intimate setting did put a dampener on our experience. The staff were really friendly and accommodating however we believe they could have approached the diners next to us earlier, when being told to keep the noise down. Our bill came to just shy of £150 with service charge included, however I do not feel this reflects the experience we had. The Coal Shed is a nice place, I think we were just unlucky.
We celebrated our sons birthday here and enjoyed the experience. I chose sides and starters. The food was lovely, especially my celeriac starter! I could have eaten six. I loved the broccoli too. I would have liked more choice in wine by the glass. Overall it was an enjoyable experience. Excellent service.
Thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Had a lovely meal char grilling tip top. Will go to the tower bridge one in the new year. The staff were so good and attentive and provided a perfect service where we didn’t feel we had to get their attention or wait long for the food to arrive.
Terrible front of house, quite rude. Waiters lovely but after spending all this money they spoil it for you by telling you you have to vacate your table in 30 mins.
Great steak house but upstairs has less ambience and we never like the two sittings although we finished way before needed. Still one of our favourites
Very good staff who were really friendly and provided a free starter as we were asked to move table before we had even ordered.
Excellent food ... this was my second visit ... both during winter months and I would strongly recommend the owners sort out the entrance door situation as the constant feeling of cold air when people entering the restaurant was the only thing that has disappointed me on both my visits .. the food was excellent ... thankyou
Best roast ever and great staff
Fabulous meal for the meat eater in your life! Great quality products week cooked with friendly helpful service and not deadly on the wallet.
Made to feel welcome as we entered . Bit disappointed with my wife’s tiger prawn starter consisting of only two tiger prawns . Steaks were fantastic . Upset that my favourite pudding was unavailable. Service charge is one thing I don’t agree with and think the customer should choose what they feel fit to leave .
Excellent food, staff were brilliant, could not fault anything.
Really good food but the service could be better and more interested in us!
The service and the presentation of the food was very good, the starters in both cases were delicious.
Re the main course both meats were not tender enough (chicken and pork), the vegetable was tasty.
The sweet was good.
A window table was recommended to us which I then booked. When we entered the restaurant the table had been taken. We were led to another table which was adequate but a bit of a squeeze.
Our starter arrived before our apperitif
Asked for tonic on side of gin it was all poured into gin
Our mains arrived with no wine
The sides were tasty but ridiculously small
We were given dessert options as soon as our plates were taken
Our table booking was 20.15 not late but the speed of service was that of fast food outlet
It was as if no communication between service and kitchen
Incredible food, great ambiance and wonderful service. Our favourite restaurant in Brighton.
It’s our second time visiting the coal shed. Although expensive you absolutely get what you pay for. Service is fantastic. Nothing too much trouble. The flavours of the food is out of this world. A real treat that we will certainly visit again.
Great food and great service !
