The Coal Shed
Our method at The Coal Shed is simple: the highest quality ingredients, sourced as locally as possible and expertly cooked. As well as a seasonal à la carte menu, we also offer daily specials, a great value express lunch and pre theatre menu plus Brighton's favourite Sunday Sharing Roasts.
Amazing food as always and a good atmosphere with friendly, efficient service.
Over priced for what it was .
The service was ok.
Steak had a lot of fat on it.
For the money pain expected a little more than an average steak. Got a very small amount of chips. Wouldn’t go back.
Good was good but on the small side and unfortunately had some rude customers next to us apart from that it was good
Overall our experience of the Coal Shed was brilliant. The service from the staff was so friendly and we shared laughter and conversation at numerous points of the night.
The food was stunning. Me and my fiancé had Fillet Steak which was simply amazing and then we each shared a bottle of wine which we thought was great too.
Would totally recommend and we are planning on exploring the London one too!
Great atmosphere and quality of food. The staff were really friendly and engaging. We would definitely go back.
Really lovely atmosphere, exceptional service and outstanding food. The oysters were particularly good but the steak options blow everything out of the water
Food excellent. Great service. Chateaubriand and the chips were divine. Pork belly starter and crab starter too.
Amazing lamb so tender
Steak excellent too
Service excellent and waiter certainly knew his wines
Waitress very helpful and friendly too.
Shame they don’t include a sauce in the price with the steak and some vegetables considering the price!
What a good memory, meals were awesome. I will recommend to everyone with pleasure
Varied menu and good wines. New menu item fish stew didn’t hit the mark
Small portions, expensive and average quality. We went as a group of 6 and only 1 person was impressed with the food.
First time visit and it was exactly as described on other ratings (Trip advisor etc). The service was exemplary - we arrived 10 minutes early so not having bar service/waiting area we awere asked to grab a swift half in the pub two doors up and they would fetch us once the table was ready and waiting, which they did. (nice touch). The food was 1st class, cooked to perfection and served by friendly, attentive waiting staff. Great choice of food, the Sunday roast is a must and really good wine list to boot! Deffo recommendation for this delightful restaurant.
Fabulous roast dinner. Nice informal buzzy environment
My wife and I had Sunday Lunch and chose the shared sirloin for main course after starters of sea bream ceviche and belly of pork. All was fantastic, a real treat.
Fabulous as always.
The sharing roast was outstanding!
Staff are excellent
We had an incredible meal, the food was amazing, the service impeccable and friendly, the whole experience was awesome!
Recommend a visit when in Brighton
Good service with attentive staff good ambience good food
An amazing restaurant- lovely staff, incredible food the only downside is we are not local! Everything was brilliant. If you in the area this is the place to eat! You will not be disappointed with anything!
Food was fab!
Small restaurant with a good vibe
Prosecco was £42 a bottle! It was also pretty average
Waitress kept pressing us to order, topping up glass.. etc. it felt like she really needed us to leave! Fair enough it was a 2 hr window but that seemed to be constantly on her mind!
My steak was lovely, but my wife did not enjoyed her burger it came out under cooked but our waiter was lovely he took it away but when it came back over cooked and dry, but our chips very good.
This restaurant is a hidden gem in a back street of Brighton. Customer Service was genuine and with friendly interaction. The food was served creatively, with good portions. All in all a very enjoyable experience.
Great steak and cocktails, good service and friendly people
Delicious food in a lovely surrounding. Would happily return .
Despite being a steak restaurant the veggie options were lovely
Absolutely fantastic food, great quality. Would definitely recommend.
Excellent food - 11/10! Excellent service - 11/10. Somewhat noisy, but I think that is a part of the whole setup with wooden floors - the bikers revving up outside (the Hells Angels were visiting Brighton that day!) was unexpected. I would love to return and have another excellent meal here - can't recommend it enough. Apparently there are two other 'Coal Sheds' in the UK which I will hopefully experience soon...
Good quality meals with a large and nice choice of wines.
Vers helpful staff
Room upstairs a bit noisy
We weren’t that impressed with the event night. We felt cramped, sitting so close to other guests it was uncomfortable. The upstairs room was stuffy and the atmosphere wasn’t great. We also weren’t that impressed with the food and found ourselves eating it out of politeness rather than enjoyment. Some elements such as the extremely vinegary artichoke were almost inedible. Didn’t really get a sense of bbq at all. There were some nice wines. But overall we paid quite a lot of money for an evening that was mediocre at best.
Absolutely loved our first Coal Shed experience! It certainly won't be our last. Food was unbelievably delicious! Thank you
I've been to The Coal Shed three times before and have enjoyed the food and the ambience of the restaurant. On this occasion however we had a really disappointing experience. We booked for the special "cooking on coal" BBQ themed night which we were really excited about.
Sadly the communal dining experience meant we were really crammed in when they must have got their numbers wrong, and decided to add more people to our table. This was even more annoying as the other long communal table seemed to have space on it?!
By far the worst part however was that the seven-course tasting menu didn't resemble anything to do with a BBQ whatsoever. The usually delicious, charred, mouthwatering meat was replaced with deep-fried, sous vide, textureless and tasteless food. This was incredibly baffling for a night which was advertised as "Cooking on coal".
The staff also appeared to be rushed off their feet, confused about which tables had already been served, and receiving drinks was incredibly slow. I'd safely say its the worst £170 on a meal out that we've ever spent in Brighton.
I won't be recommending The Coal Shed in the future.
Me and my partner came here as a special treat for my 25th birthday and were really excited to spend some valuable quality time together. When we arrived we were shocked at how small the restaurant was, if you want to eat here I suggest booking. We arrived and were seated, with menus taking a few minutes to be presented, we were then told that quite a few things were not on the menu as they had run out which was disappointing after looking at the menu during the day before arriving. On our booking we were asked whether our visit was for an occasion however it made no difference on the day as were weren’t even given a complimentary glass of Prosecco, I work as a waitress and little things like this go a long way!
Our waitress was very disengaged and made no effort to talk with us or explain anything on the menu however the food was incredible, if it wasn’t for this then our visit wouldn’t have been a good one.
A 12.5% service charge was automatically added and our waitress made no comment of it being discretionary and just came over with the card machine, it’s awkward and uncomfortable to have to ask for it to be taken off so we begrudgingly paid it.
If you want some beautiful tasting food then I would definitely recommend but don’t expect 5* service.
Really enjoyed experience at The Coal Shed. Everything about it was brilliant! Would definitely go back again and will recommend to others. Thank you
Quality of the food was amazing - yes it's expensive, but I don't think overly so. The waitress we had for most of the night was lovely - there was a waiter towards the end who was a little brisk, but generally speaking we had a really nice night.
Lovely welcoming smiley faces, the whole time we were at the restaurant! As usual, the food and service was exemplary! Last time I had the best dessert I had tasted probably in a couple of years! Thank you, everybody!
Incredible food, nice and out-of-the-way compared to some other restaurants situated a bit closer to the action, but worth the wander through the streets of Brighton. Our sharing roast dinner may have been the best steak we have ever eaten - and we have travelled the world! Well cooked, well presented, tasty and with fresh seasonal vegetables. Service was lovely too, the staff were very attentive and chatty. Overall, could not recommend more!
A lovely Sunday lunch which I would highly recommend. The steak was cooked perfectly and the wine suggestion accompanied the meal perfectly. Thank you
Fab food and service
The service was outstanding. A quiet birthday, observed and enhanced. And as always the food was sublime.
Nice spread great service
