A nice meal at the Coal Shed this week... Somehow everything was just 'right'... Very rare a restaurant achieves this... And a serious big plus for me, you didn't feel like you were sitting in the lap of the people on the next table like you do in so many other restaurants these days! Great Job!
Nicely done roast beef and good veggie options. A nice touch that kids eat for free.
Ate here on 12/10/19 and sadly had a disappointing meal. We’d booked the table after watching Celebrity Masterchef 2019 and Razor Ruddock cook there. We were very impressed with the quality that we watched on TV and so booked the table.
Unfortunately the attention to detail wasn’t as in the show. My plate came and you could see the marks around the side of the plate....in the show it showed the plates being wiped around the edge before be sent out. This clearly wasn’t done. The ribeye steak was flavoursome but had a massive streak of gristle through the middle......I appreciate this can be hard to spot but sadly it meant I had to leave half of my steak. My husbands plate also had greasy marks around the edge ie it hadn’t been wiped. The puddings were ok but not finessed like we saw on the show. Had a bottle of Prosecco which the waitress poured about 1/10 on the table without an apology! Had to ask twice for my glass to be filled up. Table very close to others so we could hear their conversations.....quite hard to get into my seat too with wet coats and brolleys......I’m a size 14 so not massive size wise. They had to open the side door near the colourful fountains as the smell of grilling was very strong.....think there was a problem with the extractor fans. However, it was cold where we were sat. Also the people on the table next to us were cold so they had to close the door. Oh well, we won’t return or recommend sadly. Very disappointing as it was a birthday celebration.
Food was outstanding. The majority of the staff were excellent except one over zealous waitress who seemed to be hovering over us ready to snatch our plate away. She took my drinks glass without asking if I wanted another. Something that was spotted by another waitress who asked me instead. I’m not sure if they were having a problem in the kitchen with the extraction system but the door near where we were sitting had to be opened on a cold and rainy evening as it was getting smokey upstairs according to the member of staff who opened it.
Pleasant welcoming staff, very nice starters...we thought we were on a winner, but one of our main meals was steaming hot while the other had obviously been waiting and was hardly luke warm. We raised it with the staff member who asked if everything was ok, and again at the end of the meal, and again when the bill came. The offer of the manager was to delete the service charge! So the staff--including those who had been attentive and efficient in their jobs--were to be penalised. Of course under these circumstances we included the service, but it left an unpleasant (and cold!) taste in our mouths as to how this was dealt with.
We will not return --there are plenty of options around there--and will not recommend to anyone else.
We been waiting for our food for at least 40 minutes and only after that, they came saying it was because the meal wasn't done properly so they had to re do it but without notifying us. At least they didn't let us pay. Food was very good though.
Slow service and the restaurant wasn't even full. Went for lunch with children and although facilities were good for babies, the food for the kids menu was not thought out at all. Fish and chips was span roasted filet of fish (we fund small bones in ours) with large chunky chips and wilted spinach. Not child friendly at all. The mains we're good, however my steak was spoiled by an overly salty Korean BBQ sauce. It was also ridiculously warm inside. On a cold afternoon, everyone was sat in t-shirts.
Food was good quality, well cooked and thoroughly enjoyable. Steak was better than my last visit to hawksmoor (borough market). Relaxed atmosphere, even noise to have a buzz while being able to enjoy dinner and conversation with a partner.
Dear Rob, Thank you for leaving us kind review. We are really pleased that you liked the steak and service. We look forward to your next visit Best regards, Lina
Restaurant could not find our reservation on arrival and were quite hostile, even when I showed them my confirmation. A table was found but no apology for keeping us waiting - and then an email from Open Table at the end of the evening, asking why we hadn't turned up. Not great.
Dear Paul, Thank you for taking your time to provide us with review. My sincere apologies for inconvenience caused. Perhaps an error accrued in the system. I hope it won't deter you from visiting us again Kindest regards, Lina
Good ambiance and service , food was great.
Definitely recommend to friends and family
Great night out. Sea Bass was delicious. All that we ordered was super tasty. Would highly recommend. And definitely going back.
Dear Angela, Thank so much for your kind words! We are looking forward seeing you again! Best regards, Lina
This was chosen because it is very close to The Bridge Theatre. What a surprise, lovely welcome, friendly staff and brilliant food. Great value as well. We will return and thank you
Dear John, Team at The Coal Shed is very happy that you enjoyed your time with us. We can't wait welcoming you back in the nearest future. Kind regards, Lina
Sunday dinner is delicious. The beef was rare, roast potatoes excellent and the gravy one of the best I've had. We all agreed that we will be visiting again.
Good atmosphere, friendly staff for a pleasant family Sunday roast. We'll definitely come back to try some of the other dishes on the menu!
Great food. Really polite prompt service.
Catered for our children really well.
Anniversary surprise gift too.
Disappointed after seeing on Masterchef. Both plates for starters and mains were chipped. We ordered a bottle of wine and a carafe was served. When we asked the waiter brought the bottle we’d ordered. Rib eye steak was ok, not much flavour, but the Korean bbq sauce was served stone cold in a mini skillet- good job it wasn’t poured over the steak!
Cod dish was very nice. We ordered the fruit cobbler for dessert and it was inedible the fruit wasn’t cooked - we sent this back and it was taken from the bill. Very disappointed after looking forward to great things 😌
Service was slow but the staff were brilliant at managing expectations and making up for it with some free chocolates. Food was great
Great food. Awesome steaks cooked to perfection. Great prices for London. Highly recommended
The service was attentive but not overbearing we had a great meal. Lively atmosphere on the ground floor.
The steaks, sides and drinks were excellent but the desserts very disappointing. The waiter did try and give us a free one to make up for it but that was also poor. Go but skip dessert.
Loved it all!!
Excellent quality food, beautifully presented, and very nice and welcoming staff. However, it took an age between courses, and quite noisy at some tables near us. Overall, a nice meal, but too long to wait between courses, and quite pricey.
It was very good. We arrived late due to traffic but our meal arrived promptly
So we were not late for the theatre. Thank you
Starters were lovely. My main turned up in a cold skillet and had to be returned. Bulb of garlic not soft to squeeze out. Waiter was very helpful but was just giving excuses from the chef. Dessert was lovely. More care needed as not a cheap place. Read such great reviews so was disappointed.
Our first visit to the Coal Shed, and we were very impressed. Ideal location for visiting the Bridge Theatre (literally next door). Food was all delicious - Spiced Cauliflower, Whole grilled Bream and Fig Baked Rice - and reasonably priced. We went for the a la carte menu, but the set menu looked very good value. Service was very efficient and friendly. Our only minor complaint was that the tables are a little too close together, making things rather crowded. Will definitely return.
We had the Express menu as we were going to the theatre. The restaurant was busy and had a lively atmosphere. The service was a bit haphazard and it wasn't clear that we had any designated server.
Unfortunately, the food available on the Express menu turned out to be poorly executed and of surprisingly modest quantity. The roast cauliflower starter was way too al dente for my taste, almost raw, and included far too much stalk. The gammon steak was overcooked and, in fact, burnt. It was accompanied by three small pieces of courgette. It was dry and tougher to eat than it should have been. My wife had the bream and it was cooked acceptably but had far too much oil left on it.
Sadly, the paucity of the food made it a poor value meal which was a shame because this restaurant clearly has aspirations to do rather better.
Flavorful entrees: both dishes were fantastic. Service was attentive and friendly. I recommend this place.
The Coal Shed is a great venue for dinner before going to the Bridge Theatre. Portions are generous (my friends shared a steak and had more than enough). My daughter and I shared 3 starters which were imaginative and delicious. Great wine and drinks here too.
I personally didn't like the steak: the meat didn't have much flavour, pretty much no crust at all - the fillet part of the porterhouse was actually very much on the dry side, despite being medium-rare cooked. The place is not cheap - we paid £140 for a steak, 2 sides and 2 glasses of wine. For this price there are better places in London. I don't think I'll come back.
Dear Marco, Thank you for taking your time to leave a review and provide us with the feedback. I am very sorry to hear that Porter house was on the dry side and your experience did not meet up with expectations. I sincerely hope that you will give us another chance and come back for a lunch or dinner. Please do not hesitate to contact me on firstname.lastname@example.org Kind regards, Lina
Food was delicious but service was very slow despite it being quiet in the restaurant - our food took about 45 mins to 1 hour to arrive.
Dear Jools, Thank you for your time to write a review. I will personally speak to my team to avoid any delays in the future. I am glad that you enjoyed the food and we can't wait seeing you again. Best regards, Lina
We had an enjoyable lunch for two here on Friday , food and service were good . Unfortunately we had a guy beside us who thought he was an expert on everything and kept talking loudly and complaining to the other two guests at his table.
Dear Marce, Thank you for your lovely feedback. I am very pleased to read that you enjoyed food and service. Apologies about a guy who sat next you. Upon your next visit we will try accommodate you at more private table Many Thanks! Lina
Poor service from certain staff. Had to send the fillet back as was well over cooked. The Instagram images looked far more impressive than the reality. Sorry.
Dear Mike, Thank you for taking time to leave a review. I would like to apologize personally for circumstances surrounding it. Let me assure that we take our guests feedback very serious and it will be discussed with the team. i sincerely hope you to give us another chance and visit us again. Regards, Lina
Unfortunately my table was not ready for the time I booked. I was given a free drink and 20 minutes later was informed that it might be another 15 minutes. Was offered to eat in the bar or upstairs. I took the upstairs option due to more comfortable seats but was the only person dining other than a party in the private dining room. Food ok, but had better. Disappointed as looked good on Master Chef.
Delicious food, tasty & full of flavour, good portions, friendly service, excellent location
Dear Michael, Thank you for your kind words. I am very happy that you had wonderful experience at our restaurant. Please pass my greetings to your wife as well. Team at The Coal Shed is looking forward seeing you again! Best regards, Lina
Great restaurant with great food - shame they have taken the burger off the menu (except for Saturdays)
Dear Jackie, Thank you for fantastic feedback. Team at the Coal Shed is looking forward seeing you again! Regards, Lina
Terrible service. We had to wait over half an hour for two drinks. The steak was over priced and over cooked. Really over priced for the quality of the food and service. Not impressed and would not return to this one. Went for a friends birthday and it was disappointing to say the least. The one in Brighton is fab though
Beautiful food but as we had a booked later in the evening there were a lot of menu dishes unavailable. I would expect prior warning when booking a later sitting and perhaps the option to pre-book as this left some of our group disappointed. Due to this we did not pay the whole of the discretionary service charge and the attitude of our waiter suddenly changed! We still paid 10% but didn’t feel the 15% added to the bill was appropriate due to the reduced menu. Food wise I would recommend the coal shed but go early!!!
Amazing experience. Food fantastic
Great value, perfect for Bridge Theatre. Superb 3 course theatre menu
I was so disappointed with the burger -i have never had such a greasy burger and couldn't eat it .The fruit cobbler was ok .
We were able to sit outside where there was NO music, just the sound of the wind in the trees & the water fountain!
