The Coal Shed London
Open seven days a week, the restaurant uses the highest quality ingredients, sourced as locally as possible. Try the 35-day aged sharing steaks or the South Coast sharing fish for a dining experience to remember.
The Coal Shed London, occupies two floors and a bar for pre and post dinner drinks and cocktails expertly crafted. If you want to host your own event, there is a private dining room on the mezzanine or the restaurant can be exclusively hired for any type of occasion.
Picked the restaurant as was going to The Bridge theatre. So glad we did as the food was amazing and was great service from the staff too.
Great choice for pre theatre supper. Really good food and well looked after by attentive staff. Highly recommended.
The waiting staff are not the friendliest bunch, service could be improved. We bough this to the attention of the Wine waiter who was quite possibly the highlight of our evening, so informative and could only apologise on behalf of his colleagues. He took it upon himself to look after us for the rest of the evening and he completely turned the experience around - Thank you. We will be returning as the food is AMAZING!
Lovely food, lovely atmosphere and lovely service.
Food very good, particularly excellent steaks and desserts. Prices were about what I'd expect for central London. Excellent service, friendly yet professional. Selection of wines by the glass was a bit limited, that's probably the only area for improvement we saw. Would happily go back.
Quite simply, the food is very good. I had a Jacob's ladder starter followed by the chicken dish with a side iceberg/bacon.blue cheese salad. All high quality and well presented. I didn't like our table (next to one of the waiting stations so we had a lot of movement next to us continually), and the wine per glass was v.expensive. Desert: I had the chocolate bar which was had to get in to as it was v.thick chocolate and v.cold, but the taste was dense and rich. There was a loud child who was rather grating until the group left, but otherwise the atmosphere was fine.
Yes, it was great and hugely convenient for the Bridge theatre. The only reason we rated service lower was that my friend ordered a white wine and got a red wine... things were very busy pre-theatre so he didn't want to mention it. Otherwise, lovely.
Dear Susan, Firstly, let me thank you for taking your time write a review. I am happy that enjoyed our pre-theatre menu. However, I would like personally apologize for the mistake with your wine order. I hope to see you again in the future. Best Regards, Lina
An outside table on a pleasant evening, front of house staff and waiters all very helpful, friendly and polite. Attentive without being intrusive.
The food was excellent but costly. Ordered fillet steak medium. It came out what I would call medium well but that's such a personal thing. It was really delicious, as were the perfect chips and the wilted spinach. The olives were lovely too.
The wine was decent but I got the absolute cheapest on offer. They could maybe do with offering more of a selection at the lower priced end of the range.
Dear Marie, Thank you so much for taking time to write a review. I am very happy that you enjoyed your experience at the Coal Shed. I will pass your feedback to Felice - the waiter who was looking after you. I bet he will be very happy. Sorry that we missed a mark with steak cooking temperature. I do hope to see you again and make your evening nothing but - perfect. Regards, Lina
MY main issue with this restaurant is understaffing. It was a constant chore getting a waiter’s attention and we felt we were not taken care of. For the amount of money this restaurant charges, I would say they need to up their game.
Food was OK. Starters selection not so we thought out.
Lovely meal & great service - will definitely be back. Beautifully cooked sea bass & really helpful waiter - thank you.
Dear Helent, Thank you very much for your lovely feedback. We are looking forward welcoming back you soon! Regards, Lina
Lovely meal in a posh yet relaxed atmosphere.
Dear Sir or Madam, I am very pleased hat you had wonderful time at our restaurant. I do hope to see again in the nearest future. Warm regards, Lina
Great option for Sunday lunch
Dear Chip, Thank you for your lovely feedback. Please come back for more Sunday roasts in the future! Warm regards, Lina
Marvellous food and service, have been to Brighton and London locations and both are consistently good.
Dear Steve, Thank you so much for your kind words. Team at The Coal Shed is happy to know that our regulars do not forget to visit us in London. We are looking forward welcoming you back in the future! Warm regards, Lina
Just another over priced run of the mill cafe portion size not good What has happened to restaurants you used to get a tomato or mushroom as complimentary not just the meat Now every is an Extra all the menus are the same
I miss tradition if this is the future of restaurants I’ll be staying at home there really is nothing to entice me
Someone in this industry needs to look back at history and create that all these places are just dark moody uninteresting places these seating is the same the menus are the same Please would someone with a little courage listen and do something had the name not been on the door I could have been in any restaurant and not known the difference boring food boring ideas how I wish I could turn the clock back
Expensive for what you get vxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Fantastic! Had a lovely evening out with my better half before suprising her by popping the question later in the night. Our meal was to die for and we had service to match. Really set the tone well for events later in the night. Best place I've been for dinner in a long time! Highly recommend.
The coal shed was in a really nice location and very easy to get to, as soon as we got there we was shown to a table didn’t have to wait around the food was amazing and not to expensive 10/10
Fitted the bill close to the Bridge excellent food and good service will return.
excellent pre theatre menu and carafe of wine delivered with efficient service
Dear Sd123, Thank you very much for your kind words. I am very happy that you enjoyed your meal with us. Please, visit us again soon! Best regards, Lina
There were flies everywhere, asked about being moved but apparently this is a restaurant wide issue!
Great accommodations for the birthday celebrations though
Dear Sir or Madam, Thank you for taking your time to provide us with a review.Just to assure you we take our guests feedback very seriously. Regarding fly's issue, let me confirm that restaurants senior management team is on top of maintaining it. Tourist trap with some of the smallest sides I've ever seen
Delicious food. Dessert platter was so good and great option to try multiple things. Steak was beautiful as well. The sides were a little small but tasty.
Service was really good too. And they weren’t pressing about having the table back and let us enjoy ourselves which was really appreciated.
Lovely service in a beautiful setting and delicious food. Great gin too. We sat outside which was very nice with the fountain nearby. Will definitely return.
Dear Julie, Thank you so much for your lovely feedback. We are looking forward seeing you again in the future. Kind regards, Lina
Was really looking forward to my first experience at the coal shed... but have to admit I was a little disappointed and will not be rushing back.
The steaks (ribeyes) we had were quite stringy and tough to cut. They did not look and feel as luxurious they should have been.
The waitress understood our disappointment when we settled the bill, but it took us quite a while to attract any of the serving staff attention following having our plates taken at the end of the meal, in order to get the bill so we could pay.
All in all, the ambience and location great, but massively underwhelmed with the steak. Hopefully it was a one off and we were just unlucky, but it had made me think I will pick somewhere else next time instead for a real treat when it comes to an expensive steak dinner.
Our visit was marred by an over-cooked steak which meant that one of our group ate after the rest of us had finished. We waited a long time for our desserts which, when they arrived, two were wrong and had to be returned and replaced. We were the first people into the restaurant at 5.00pm and didn’t leave until 7.15pm - rushing to get to the theatre! Our salad was given complimentary and £4 supplement taken off our £250 bill by way of an apology but have to say we’re unimpressed and will not be rushing back!
Me and a friend try The Coal Shed yesterday night, and we just love it.
Great Food (You must Try the Chateaubriand)
Really attentive Service, and very tasty cocktails
We will back!
Dear Simon, I am very pleased to read that you enjoyed your visit with us. We sincerely hope to see you very soon! Best regards, Lina
The service and food at the Coal Shed was amazing. My daughter has a nut allergy and they were very careful with her food. Also having been asked if we were going to the theatre (as they do an express menu) when we said no we are celebrating the graduation they brought out some beautiful chocolate coals with congratulations in chocolate sauce without being asked or charged for.... those are the little things that makes restaurants great
Dear Sally, Thank you for taking your time and leaving a review. I am very happy to read about your experience at our restaurant. Please pass my congratulations for your daughter on her graduation. We hope to see you again in the nearest future. Warm regards, Lina
My friends and I went for Sunday roast and we felt that for the price, you don’t get much. The beef was delicious but the sides let it down. They really need to up their game if they want to attract more people to Sunday roast as there’s so many offerings around London Bridge.
Would I go there again? Absolutely yes! I have ticked 'very good' for most things because there's a big gap between 'very good' and 'outstanding'. However, we had a really nice experience, the food really was very nice indeed and the surroundings and atmosphere were also very enjoyable.
Our first visit was rather disappointing. We booked for 3 people at 6pm after the theatre and were seated upstairs. Having arrived promptly at 6pm, we choose steaks from the menu and did not want starters. It was gone 7pm before we received our steaks and we had to ask when they were coming. No interim explanation as to the delay or any apology for them being so late. No one seemed very fussed about bringing the sides either, so we decided to forgo desserts.
Co-incidentally during the time we were waiting for our steaks,we observed the unfortunate situation for another party of 5 sitting behind us when a full gin and tonic was spilt over a member of the group.
And then to compound our observations, a couple came to sit at the table beside us. They had their main courses arrive and then shortly they got up and left with hardly touching their food. When we asked what was the matter and why they were leaving so suddenly they told us they had moved up stairs because there were flies around their table downstairs , and then as they tried to eat upstairs more flies appeared in their drinks.
We were aware of these small insects [they weren't houseflies] but they didn't bother us so much.
So all in all, not the best of experiences for our first visit - we'll have to make a decision as to whether we try the restaurant again. A pity, because the steaks were very good!
We had the pre theatre menu which was obviously limited but the food was fine and the service was reasonably priced too. We’ve eaten here a couple of times before from the full menu which is good and also offers good value in this area.
great food, awful service - staff didn’t seem to know the menu or how to serve wine, which was a real shame as the wine and food were great
Dear Pete, Thank you for taking your time to write a review. I am very sorry to read that we missed the mark with service and your experience was not for what we are know for. I can assure your feedback has been taken seriously and will be passed on to the team. However, I sincerely hope you'll visit us again in the future. Please contact me on email@example.com for future bookings.
We visited this restaurant on the hottest day of the year when it was 38 degC. The air conditioning wasn't very good and it was almost as hot in the restaurant as it was outside. The restaurant was also very noisy. The food was good but I felt the service could have been much better. Its like the waiting staff walk around trying to avoid eye contact and every time I wanted to order something or had a question it took a while to get anyone's attention. We didn't stay and order any desert in the end as the heat drove us out. It was so stuffy and hot we had to get out.
Good quality food and friendly, attentive staff made for a good eating experience in a prime central London location.
I think I have to say that I had the best sirloin steaks I’ve ever eaten in a restaurant, accompanied by delicious beef dripping chips and a blue cheese iceberg salad. My partner had the ribeye steak and also agreed it was one of the best. Nice level of service even though our waitress inadvertently dropped one those delicious chips on the floor.
Dear Richard, Thank you for taking time to write a review. I am glad that you and your partner enjoyed the steaks. We are very proud offering selection of the sharing steaks that we change on the daily basis. Please visit us again soon to try! Best regards, Lina
It was my sisters birthday and they wrote her a lovely message and brought her some extra treats to the table. Really lovely afternoon 👍
Dear Sir or Madam, I am happy that you had lovely afternoon celebrating your sisters birthday with us! Please visit again soon Warm regards, Lina
Me and my partner visited the coal shed on Saturday for the beginning of dinner service, I would recommend booking as it was quite busy.
The restaurant made our evening very special having just proposed to my partner before attending, the service was second to none and nothing was too much of an effort. Thank you very much for making our special day feel exactly that.
Dear Tomo, Congratulations again from everyone at The Coal Shed on this beautiful occasion! We're happy that chose our restaurant for your special evening. I wish you all the best in the future and sincerely hope to see you again! Warm regards, Lina
Jesus Christ, someone throw the bartender into the Thames straight away. How hard can it be to order a Manhattan on the rocks? After the third botch I just ordered the ingredients separately and said I would assemble it myself... I still got another Manhattan no rocks. Finally I just asked for a rosemary gin & tonic but it came with thyme instead. Also the béarnaise tasted gross.
This was my first visit and very likely to be my last. Ordered a large cut prime rib but it was overcooked, not to our requested tenderness. It was dry and tough, without the sauce it would be quite unpleasant to eat. But their mash was very very good.
Service was friendly but very slow and inattentive. I had to ask for someone to take order, and that person didn’t return so I had to ask for someone else. At this price point, I expect staff to be proactive. Clearly they were either understaffed or undertrained for busy times.
From my overall experience, I would say this place is overpriced. Many more steak restaurants out there with a similar price tag but much better service and ambience.
UPDATE 06/08/19: Thank you to the team for responding to my review. I have emailed them but have not received a reply. I am not sure if they are serious about this...

As usual we had a lovely time at Coal shed London. The food and service were amazing. Even though one of the party had extreme food intolerance, they made a huge effort to accommodate. Well done.
