the place is very different, but in a good way, food came fast and tasty,a great concept and it had a genuine buzz , we loved it !!!! my only other comment is that we are in our mid 70s and we got it ; we understood the concept...but i suspect the ultra cool maitre d ' wasn't sure how to approach us.......
Fab food, fab music and fab people. This was our first visit and we’ll definitely be coming again. Such a lovely evening out to celebrate Father’s Day. Thank you!
Great tasting food with plenty of veggie options. Friendly staff. Good ambience. The food is tapas style so you get to taste many different flavours and set your meal size to your own needs.
My only gripe was that the online booking application was a bit buggy. Best to phone for a table.
Great food, and fantastic service!!!
Lovely atmosphere would recommend for family venue also.
Great atmosphere. Tasty and interesting food and tapas style meant you can try lots of different dishes. Service was friendly but efficient and the price was very reasonable. Would definitely recommend it but maybe not for a quiet romantic evening for two.
Messed up my order twice and the food was very slow to come even once they realised their mistake. However, the staff did give us some stuff on the house but it wasn’t sufficient compensation
Great food and friendly service but music far too loud and lively. Very difficult to talk and we left without having cocktails due to the music.
Great food and location. Let down by too small tables for sharing food and the noise level.
I read very positive reviews before coming. Did not live up to expectations. Food was okay but it was difficult to discern tastes between different dishes in some cases.
Service varied through the dinner. Sometimes it was v good. One waitress spilled the sauce from the dish over one of the group and on the jacket that we had to put on the floor - nowhere to hang anything.
Waited a good while for second round of drinks, then had to go to the bar to remind staff.
Prices were reasonable.
Based on this experience, I wouldn’t return or recommend.
Really amazing food. We went for the option of letting the servers choose and to say the amount was generous would be an understatement! Everything was absolutely delicious and the service was amazing.
Nice atmosphere. Lovely young waiting staff. Devilled prawns disappointing overcooked and breaking down haedctofind among the onion and sauce. Cheese in a very similar sauce to the prawns so would like waiting staff to have warned us of this and not had both. 5Cs was good and fresh tasting. Fish hot pot a bit tough and dry. Red rice fine. Roti tasty. Okra not that special. Fish balls with ketchup very disappointing- something less dense with a more Sri Lankan dipping sauce would be better . Nice concept and good staff but menu needs improving to seem fresher and more balanced.
I’d recommend trying a meal here as they have so many different street food options. However on the night we attended they had staffing issues so our food was delayed - fine for us but not the kids. The management were apologetic and friendly though and the kids enjoyed their desserts. The free kids chicken rice should’ve been ideal (and a good portion) but it was a bit too spicy for my kids - not judging the restaurant on that, just as a warning for others, as depends on your children’s tastes.
Great food at a great prices. Unfortunately the table seating is backless stools maybe try the bar stools if you have back issues.
Really delicious food, so much flavour in every dish we tried. The staff were great and explained the menu and made dish recommendations.
It was just OK we were famished but the food tasted just OK nothing special so probably wouldn't choose to visit again. Novelty of Sri Lankan cuisine was an experience so try it once it might be to you taste.
Good food, waiter made recommendations for amount of food (3 dishes per person) and rice and bread to mop up the main dishes. They said the food comes as and when it's ready, but unfortunately the rice and bread came last to the table so we we ate most of the curries etc without rice or bread. Personally, I'd suggest they always bring these staples out with the first batch of dishes. We ate as a group of 6, 3 dishes per person and a "hopper" was a lot of food, and we could have made do with 2 each. All being said the food was very tasty and the bill very reasonable.
We’ve been wanting to try out this restaurant for ages and weren’t disappointed. Really friendly staff who were happy to serve and help with the menu. Good relaxed atmosphere. We were served quickly with drinks which we thought were reasonably priced. Food was served in individual dishes so tasting and sharing was easy. Having had Sri Lanka food on a recent holiday we were pleased with the use of spices. We’d certainly revisit with friends.
Great food and really friendly service. Goat curry delicious and the cheese dish devine. Will be back as more dishes to try.
Really tasty food and not very expensive! Worth a visit.
Extremely short staffed on a bank holiday weekend, the Coconut Tree Clifton was still a fab, fun meal out with incredible food. The poor staff who were on shift repeatedly apologised for the slow service and some mix ups with our order, and we could see they were trying their very best to keep things running. The food was delicious, great value for money, and the restaurant had a good vibe - cheerful and full of chatter but you could still have conversation and hear everything going on around you. We will definitely be back - I can only imagine that on a better day with full staff, we would have had an exceptional time
We had a lovely family meal. The staff were wonderful and the food was delicious.
Food was amazing but the service was not great. The staff member who served us was constantly on their phone, forgot our drink and even though it was empty, we were left waiting around for the bill for a long time.
Always a great experience with excellent food. I will be returning soon.
Great food. Really tasty interesting dishes. Good to try new foods. Egg hoppers are amazing. Relaxed casual interior. Second visit & wasn’t disappointed.
Food and staff were both really amazing! Everyone we dealt with was super friendly and accommodating and the food came very quickly (considering there was 11 of us!) They even brought us a complimentary round of shots as it was my birthday
Enjoyed the decor and the tapas formula. The staff was very attentive to our needs.
We shared 7 dishes between 2 which was plenty. The food was nice and we liked most of the dishes, especially the black pork. The prawn and squid curry was a bit too watery for my liking (lots of juice rather than contents) and a bit bland. The beetroot was good and the chicken wings very very hot.
Nice evening, food was good although some dishes were vey spicy. Cocktails were ok, expected more. Service was good and very friendly. Music was very loud, difficult to have a conversation.
Great food, good sized portions, great service and value for money!
Everything was outstanding. Couldn’t recommend this place enough! Food is epic!
Food was really good. Small dishes but very tasty. Some were quite spicy. Cocktail was not worth the money. It was served in a metal tea cup and was full of ice.
Posting a review for my visit to this charming little place seems a little cruel, really. Because I can't really be wholly objective. Why? They had just one solitary waiter and one solitary chef on to cover a whole lunchtime shift. Even though the place wasn't full - must have been about half full at most - it still proved impossible for the skeleton crew to handle the volume of orders, drinks and other random requests that are...er...part and parcel of going out for a meal. Don't get me wrong, the young waiter did his level best (incredibly apologetic; almost embarrassed by the farcical situation I would say) and the chef turned out some lovely food (if you like it spicy and with real street attitude, you'll like this place). But from taking a seat to getting a menu to ordering a drink to getting the drink to ordering the food to receiving the food, it was painfully slow. Luckily, we had time to kill, so we just shrugged our shoulders and put up with it. I do not blame the harassed staff for that outcome for one single moment; the fault lies squarely with the idiot owners and/or managers who thought it was acceptable to run a restaurant that way. Maybe they thought they'd save on staff costs. Maybe they thought it would be OK. Most likely they didn't think at all. No matter. It's foolish in the extreme. And it kind of spoiled what was a birthday meal. Just for the record, I have no axe to grind (never eaten there before, not from Bristol, not running a competitor restaurant). And for authenticity's sake. the booking was 1:30 for 2 people on Monday May 6th, 2019. PS. Despite it all, we still left a tip for the young waiter - he deserved a seriously cold beer after his shift.
We left as were not seen to for drinks after 15 mins. The table next to us had been waiting over an hour for their food
Amazing food, fresh and full of flavor. Highly recommend
Arrived on time and our table wasn't ready. Food order was taken at 9:10 and we were seated shortly after. After 10pm we still had not been served so cancelled our order and left.
Victims of their own success!
Our first time in Bristol and the Coconut Tree
Amazing ambience,food and service
Value for money great and variety of flavours delish!
We were served by Tom who advised us of what foods would go together
Thank you for our overall experience
The food is superb - dozens of small plates, bursting with flavour and colour, although I suspect the chef's team has dialed the chilli down a few notches from the authentic level. There are lots of dairy/gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan options, but the dishes are all that way to start with - nothing felt like it was missing an ingredient. The restaurant had a nice buzz to it even at lunchtime, service was good, and I fed four adults to the point of capacity for under £80. Excellent - I'll definitely be going back.
Great way to sample Sri Lankan food, the Egg Hopper and crispy Cuttlefish, definitely worth the visit alone.
Food was absolutely amazing! Restaurant was a bit chilly sat by the window and the kitchen music was so loud we could hear that as well as the front of house music which was a bit hectic. Would definitely recommend though, outstanding and unique dishes.
Great food and good service allowed us to discover new tastes and flavours.
Gorgeous food. Simple gorgeous.
