The Coconut Tree - Bristol Glos Rd
Don’t expect a napkin…….it’s a roll of paper towels
Do expect an explosion of flavours in our dishes and sweet & fiery Cocotails
Do expect candles in half coconuts
Don’t expect a massive food bill…but do expect to spoil yourself with drinks
Do expect meats, fish & veggies (lots)
Do expect warm Sri Lankan hospitality
Don’t expect the volume to stay down too long
Everyone is welcome to the table.
Love the Coconut tree. The cheesy Colombo and chick peas are worth the visit alone. Staff very friendly and polite
The food was good, we went for the £20 a head option for our group of 5. Our server asked what we liked and we specifically said that we would all like to try the cuttlefish and the pork, we were told that we would have several servings of each (these were the more expensive dishes). Towards the end of the meal these still hadn't arrived so we asked and were told they had 'run out'. No-one informed us of this! Then the bill arrived and it was approx £20 less than we anticipated, we assumed that this was due to us not getting the dishes we specifically asked for. We paid and left a healthy tip. We were then approached on the pavement by a server to say they had 'forgotten' to put our drinks on the bill so we had to go back in a pay the extra. Very poor service, we felt 'stung'. Won't be going back.
Fab food and service . Only gripe was the bench seating where we were sat was a bit cramped / uncomfortable
Really friendly helpful and lovely staff. Very attentive. Completely delicious food, every dish! We’ll be back!
Great variety. Lunch with a vegan , carnivore, veggie and coconut hater !
Waiter listened to our vague preferences and produced a fabulous array of food. All full , happy and tried something new !
£100 for 4 of us for lunch and a drink each.
Food was fantastic. Was just one server working so service was slow, but he was very nice.
food was amazing and such a good relaxed atmosphere.
Friendly staff and good service. The food which is served in small dishes, is fresh and light and beautifully spiced. I recognised some of them from Sri Lanka and they were authentic.
Good food, but they seem to have forgotten one important part of street food is that it doesn't involve a 30 minute wait.
Had a nice table in the bar by the window which was nice to people watch and was quiet away from the main restaurant area. The food was incredible and very filling and was excellent value we had 8 dishes between us and 2 cocktails each and it came to £60 which was incredible. Haven’t eaten food this good in so long with so many brilliant flavours, I can’t wait to come back. The staff were super friendly too!
Such a great restaurant food and service exceptional. I tried the black pork dish this time which has a new recipe and was amazing. I have a friend from Sri Lanka and tasted like her mums cooking! :)
The service was helpful, and friendly - and the food was tasty. However, the restaurant was cold, and the chairs are very high and uncomfortable I couldn’t sit comfortably for my entire meal. I would return as the food was very good but only if I can sit on lower seats and if the heating if turned on - it is February still.
Lovely food, great service, decently priced
Delicious food and a friendly environment. Highly recommended.
Loved the cuttlefish and goat curry but probably would go parotha instead of rice next time.
Great time. Staff lovely. Great food. Yay
The food is a must try. Some genius combinations and all super tasty. All along with great veggie options too.
Staff were really friendly and it’s a very intimate atmosphere. Low levels of lighting can make it a bit tricky to read the menu tho!!
DrinkS we’re great too. A really unique selection of cocktails and a great offer of 2 for £10
The only thing that’s holding me back from a 5 star review is the service on the night I visited. Whilst the staff were super friendly, me and my table did fell a little forgotten. After the food was delivered we didn’t get checked on by the waiters until we promoted for more drinks/ the bill. It seemed like a busy evening with a couple of large parties so a table of three people are quite easy to forget. However, because of the slow service and having to grab their attention every time we wanted something I would hesitate in going back but would recommend, with a caution. But all said, a great place if you have lots of time to chill and people watch. The food really is top quality!!
Different night out. Food interesting but not great. Saturday night so very busy & noisy but staff very friendly. Cash only as internet issues was pretty inconvenient though obviously not their fault
The food was not good and was our final dish in particular did not have much taste. I don’t feel this was a good representation of Sri Lanka food. The service was very good.
Although the food and flavours were outstanding i cant get head round the fact that it is all sent out together especially in dishes that do not hold their heat, by the time i got round to eating the goat curry it was cold, if you were ordering street food you would not have 6 items at once so this was disappointing as was the lack of room to put all the dishes once they all duly arrived at our small space, with a couple either side of you, you spend your time trying to avoid elbows.
Given each table has around 1.5hrs not sure of the rush. We were done in an hour and considering it was my birthday meal out this felt a little rushed and underwhelming, i was glad i choose to go on a Friday and not wasted a Saturday.
I would definitely go back but next time i will order my dishes in stages so at least they will be hot when i get round to eating them.
The food was a bit of a mixed bag - some was really good, like the Cheesey Columbo, but some was very average, for example the potatoes.
There were a few things unavailable on the menu, and we found out one dish we ordered wasn't available when the rest of our food came out. We ordered something to replace it but were still waiting for it when we'd finished the rest of our food. Both dishes were on the bill but this was rectified.
Overall it's a great setting and nice for a change, but I wouldn't go back.
Lovely food, lovely relaxed atmosphere, will 100% go back again. Staff were all lovely too- knocked off one star because we waited quite a long time for drinks at the start and it wasnt busy.
Amazing food, brilliant service and very friendly staff! Will definitely go back again
Amazing food! Everything was delicious and there was so much to choose from. Only thing is that the room was very cold!
Perfect atmosphere for a date, the server was really knowledgeable about vegan food and the cocktail menu. Food came quickly, altogether and was piping hot and delicious! Outstanding restaurant, would highly recommend
Great service and really tasty food. Thanks for a great night out!
Meal was very nice. But the seating arrangements were a let down. Didn't expect to book at table, to end up sat on a high stool at a very small bar looking directly at a brick wall. Was very uncomfortable.
Second time I’ve been, this time I took my whole family. With all of us who have visited Sri Lanka multiple times we thoroughly enjoyed it and the food was very authentic. Only one downer was that there was a guy drilling the wooden benches when we were sat there, it was very noisy and not enjoyable, it could have been done once the Restaurant was closed. Other tables weren’t happy with the noise either. Apart from that brilliant meal and had left overs for dinner that night 👍🏻👍🏻
Superb food, slow but friendly service (but to be fair it was pretty packed). Main gripe would be it was v hot in the restaurant, otherwise would definitely recommend.
Second time there and food is amazing. Only had the vegetarian options and they were all delicious.
Great food, great resteraunt. Only marked down slightly as it was really loud so conversation was difficult. A small gripe that's just down to my age :-)
Great atmosphere, outstanding cocktails and very friendly staff. Food was really interesting and super quality.
Amazingly tasty food and yummy cocktails!
I love the Coconut Tree, I've been to the Oxford, Cheltenham, Clifton and now the Cheltenham Road restaurants. I've given 5 stars because the food was excellent, as always, and the staff were lovely, as always. However it was a busy night and we (a table of 4) waited around 45 minutes before any food arrived, then when we had finished everything, we were still waiting for 2 out 4 egg hoppers ordered at the beginning, which after another 15 minutes or so, we cancelled and ordered dessert instead. We had a great night, and the food was delicious despite this and I will be coming back for more.
It was very busy but the service was very good and food tasted great. Dishes arrived at the different time which suited us as we were sharing. Very happy vegans.
Fabulous food. I had the pork belly, special rice, Hopper and the roti bread. I’d forgotten that the roti bread they do those absolutely amazing and the hopper is great too. A side dish I had which was probably a Christmas related one was the Brussels sprouts and cashew nuts. Oh my God this was one of the most moreish things I’ve ever eaten. I’m planning to go back in between Christmas and New Year and hopefully they’ll still have this on the menu
Nice place with really friendly staff! Food and drink are tasty and the place just overall has a fun atmosphere! Would definitely return!
Bringing Sri Lankan street food to Bristol.
Experience an explosion of flavours in vegetables, meats & fish. This was the tag line that made us want to try the food but sadly I have to say we never got an explosion of flavour. The only thing we liked was the cuttlefish and at first the belly pork tasted good too but the recommended cashew dish which was destroyed by a satay sauce and the chicken wings covered in a sweet and sour sauce turned it into something that I highly doubt you could find on any Sri Lankan street. Maybe if they had a Chinese takeaway! The hopper dish they say is a must try was just a pancake in a bowl with an egg in it and a small bit of garnish. Not anything I would rant and rave about. If we ever went again I would only order the cuttlefish and the flat bread out of all the dishes we tried. All in all I'm sorry but I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone who is a true food lover as I fear you will be as disappointed as we felt after leaving. The good thing is that it does fill you up so at least you don't walk out feeling hungry. Oh also they don't mention that you have 1hr 30 minutes until they expect you to leave. They are even rude enough to tell people you are in the way. I booked the table two days in advance to be treated that way and to have them attempt to seat us on a cramped window seat. It truly was terrible customer service. All in all it was over priced what I would call hipster food. Go somewhere else and get better food for half the money.
I would recommend The Coconut tree, great food, great service and fantastic recommendations, relaxed atmosphere, I would go again!
Drinks were slow to come out but that is all I could fault amazing evening!
