The Coconut Tree - Bristol Glos Rd
Don’t expect a napkin…….it’s a roll of paper towels
Do expect an explosion of flavours in our dishes and sweet & fiery Cocotails
Do expect candles in half coconuts
Don’t expect a massive food bill…but do expect to spoil yourself with drinks
Do expect meats, fish & veggies (lots)
Do expect warm Sri Lankan hospitality
Don’t expect the volume to stay down too long
Everyone is welcome to the table.
Sunday afternoon. Only two members of waiting staff on and one of them looked really tired, but they were both cheerful, friendly and efficient and were working really hard. As always the food was fabulous - so fresh and tasty. We ate loads and for six of us the bill came to around £100, which was about half of what I had anticipated. I love this place - rustic but with great food, the opposite of the sort of pretentious place that costs a bomb but leaves you disappointed or hungry. Keep doing what you're doing!
Great food, cocktails and really lively atmosphere. Initial drinks service was slow, but staff were really friendly and helpful when you got their attention. I was there on a Friday night - with 7 friends and the place was packed! Will definitely go again!
Food was excellent, and once ordered came fairly quickly. However service was very patchy, even though it wasn't particularly busy. After taking drinks orders, it took a while until anyone came to take the food order. Once we had finished eating, it took so long for anyone to come and ask if we wanted anything else that the kitchen closed before we could order desert.
We booked for 7:45, kitchen was shut before 9, which is strange as there was the option to book for 8:30.
Really tasty food with unusual flavours. Great experience and free birthday cocktail
First time visiting the coconut tree and I can’t wait to go back as soon as possible. The staff were so helpful and food was SO yummy, thank you!
Service was appalling. We waited 45 minutes for a drink. Some of our dishes didnt arrive and then they tried charging us for them.
Very slow and unapologetic service
Waited a long time for our hoppers that came 35minutes after the food
High chairs were uncomfortable
Having been recommended to this restaurant by a couple of people, I was very disappointed by the quality of food received. Having been to Sri Lanka, not one of the dishes tasted anywhere near what they were supposed to be. The kotthu was greasy, the chickpeas were swimming in oil and lacked any flavour/seasoning whatsoever - neither did the coconut sambal. Perhaps the chef was having an off day, but needless to say I will not be going back. The price we paid did not reflect the value in any way. The staff were lovely and did give us £2 off the sambal in the end, and the ambiance was good, but that was the only positive feedback I can give.
Very professional and knowledgeable staff, real friendly.
Food was amazing of all the dishes the 3 of us had.
Ambience was cool, my only criticism was a little to much light.
Overall lovely restaurant and will return
Excellent food, fantastic staff, really great cocktails. Good value for money. Bit of a wait for food, but we went on a busy Friday night, so not complaining. Will be back!
We really enjoyed our meal at The Coconut Tree. We went for the mixed selection for £20pp and received a really varied and generous spread. Our waiter T was excellent and looked after us very well. I would definitely recommend the pinacolada cocktail that came in a pineapple and the egg hoppers!!
You have a fabulous restaurant and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and the food but you are seriously under staffed. I felt really sorry for them, they were working really hard but found it difficult to keep up with the demands of the very busy evening.
Would recommend as the food we had was nice. However, as they were busy the service wasn’t great (we had to wave/call over when we wanted to order food and drinks, bill etc), one dish never arrived and even when we were told it was coming it never did (granted, this was taken off the bill)
We had a lovely family meal, very delicious and all enjoyed it :)
Had a great evening, ordered too much food, and it was all delicious. Shared several plates between us. The cocktails were lovely - especially liked the old fashioned which had coconut ice cubes in it. We were not rushed to leave our table at all, and were able to sit, chat and drink cocktails until we were ready to leave.
Would recommend - food is great. On this particular occasion the service wasn’t good. Took at least 20 minutes to take drinks order, 15 to bring drinks, even longer to take food order.
Lots of choice for vegans and food is tasty, can add up to a lot of £ if you want to try lots of dishes and some are better value than others but overall I would recommend it.
Just too noisy...! Food was nice but a bit hit and miss...
Good explanation from staff about the menu which is tapas style. Each dish was tasty. Would recommend.
Love the food, the atmosphere and the prices. Had an amazing time there with friends.
Amazing Sri Lankan food, which was varied and really tasty. We really enjoyed the range of plates which we chose/were advised to get and I’d recommend it to friends!
Had a very delicious meal, we opted for the "can't choose" option and left it to the waiter to bring us a selection. He did not fail us and very attentive to our needs. Food was amazing as were the cocktails. My only gripe was it was so crazy warm and stuffy in the restaurant we were melting. Would definitely go again, but maybe with less clothes!
Great place and staff very nice and efficient. Vegan options taste amazing
The vegetarian dishes are really flavoursome. Surprisingly large restaurant so forget the hustle and bustle of Gloucester road. Tapas sized dishes meant as a group we all shared and this makes it a really sociable experience
Very reasonable priced food. There were some good flavours but would welcome more colour and green veg to be visible.Whilst the food was healthy it was all brown food .
A great place which we all enjoyed very much. The only niggle was that it was so noisy we weren't really able to chat, but apart from that, it was a great night
Incredible food, reasonable prices and really friendly, lovely and attentive staff.
I booked a table for 2 via open table. I did not realise there were two Coconut Tree's so accidentally booked the wrong one - this should be made clearer.
I specifically booked low seats and when we arrived they said only had high seats available. I am too short for high seats as my legs just dangle as can’t reach the bar to rest my feet on. They are designed for taller people in mind - men and tall women rather than short women. V uncomfortable. I would not have booked a table if there were only high seats available. Open table asked me which I wanted when I booked but staff said they only provide low seats for tables of 4 or more - therefore low seats should not have been offered by open table. We sat at the window facing the kebab shop and the tattoo parlour - very depressing view. One of the toilets in the restaurant was covered in excrement.
I was offered a cocktail and I asked for a sour citrus/lime one - I was recommended a Yaki - it took absolutely ages to arrive and I had to ask again - it was not sour - it just tasted of pure tequila. It was refunded when I spoke to a second waitress (not by the person who recommended it). We also ordered wine which again took ages and in fact the food arrived before the wine - we had to ask twice. The food lovely food tho.
I went to the Coconut tree when it first opened with my father in law. We were very impressed with the authenticity of the food, spice level and service.
The menu has changed to the point where some of the food is not traditional.
There were not enough shorties on the menu which would be ideal for tapas type food. And the service was terrible. Our food was left on the table for ages before being collected. The food was still tasty however it has lost it’s authentic feel and taste. A little disappointing as we know what the food used to be like.
Lovely welcoming friendly helpful staff, wonderful buzzing atmosphere and delicious interesting food that was sooooo tasty!
This was the first visit we have visited this restaurant and we will definately go again. The food was delicious and managed to satisfy all our diets meat eater/vegetarian and vegan. Ambience was great - even had delicious sweets..... altogether lush
Food was excellent. But service time slow. Very busy and very noisey. But overall really enjoyed it.
Really high quality and authentic Sri Lankan cuisine. Food arrived very quickly and the general ambience was relaxed and friendly. Would definitely recommend to anyone for a good value eating experience.
Sat next to the toilets which wasn't good. Food was ok tasted all the same .had to share a table which I didn't like.
The place was extremely hot to a point I had sweat dripping down my face. Decor was good tho.no air con
The coconut tree is an amazing place to visit. The food comes out like tapas and I'm yet to have a dish I dislike. It's great for groups, so you can all try a bit of different dishes.
The food was amazing, however we were in the restaurant for 2 hours and still didn't receive all of our dishes. The staff discounted the food heavily without us having to ask. I would recommend on a quiet night as the food was lovely and staff were helpful despite the business.
Chicken curry on the bone portion was very disappointing - more bone than chicken
Food otherwise authentic and tasty
The service was so helpful and friendly and the food was really unique and delicious and came in huge portions- recommended amounts were more than enough!
Was looking forward to this reservation, but sadly was disappointed. The food was just alright - I had the Black pork, cheesy colombo and the egg hopper. The dishes are unique and worth a try but I wouldn't recommend the black pork. It's one of the more expensive items on the list and to me just tasted like pork and gravy. Nothing special.
The ratings are more in relation to the staff. The waiters were all young kids who weren't able to give us advice on the dishes we were ordering and didn't check on us. When several dishes hadn't come after 15 minutes we had to flag them down in order to get them to us. Much to work on, unfortunately.
Excellent tasty food served by helpful and attentive staff
