The Coconut Tree Cardiff
Overall the food is fantastic and affordable. The only snag was the service and wait time. We waited over 30 mins for someone to tell us how the ordering works. After that it was another 30 mins for the food to arrive. When my partner wanted a drink she had to find a waiter to order from and after that waited another 20 mins to no drink. She had to walk up to the bar and get the drink herself that was sat on the bar. She remarked to the waitress if that was her drink and the waitress said yes but made no apology for not bringing it over.
One of our dishes didn't arrive yet they tried to charge us for it all the same. They did apologise that they were short on staff and new management had been put in place but when we were left their was at least three waiting staff sat in the corner of the bar drinking cocktails and dancing so it was quite frustrating to see the lack of effort afforded to the paying customers. The service was quite frankly one of the worst experiences I have encountered for a while and for this reason I would probably not come again or recommend to a friend.
Very noisy sat very close to a large rowdy partner. No advice given on how much to order etc. Didn't see the waitress after ordering again - we couldn't eat one of the dishes, or order anymore drinks etc and in the end had to track her down to pay at the bar after waiting so long!
Amazing food, great and speedy service and good recommendations from our waiter.
I am half Sri Lankan and I am so happy I can finally enjoy some of the foods of my childhood! The place was decorated great, the food was amazing and our waiters were so thoughtful. Absolutely, spot on place to go to try something different but, not worry if you’ll enjoy! Because, Sri Lankan food is the best
Great place to have nice Sri Lankan food in the UK!
Amazing place! Fantastic service, incredible food and cocktails. Staff were very helpful, knowledgeable and just lovely. Good vibe and great music!
Great food and good service - Music was loud but other than that everything was lovely.
No, the service was incredibly slow. Food was cold and sub par. Only person that saved the day was the boss man.
The food was beautiful . Cocktail menu was great and sampled 2 of them they were really tasty. Staff were excellent. I would definately go back again.
Second visit. Food excellent again. Service not so good. And very noisy. I really dont understand the need for music. It just raises the decibels of conversation to talk over it to a level where you just cant hear your partner across the table.
We'll be back, for the food, but I hope the noise levels can be addressed.
Wedi clywed am y lle yma drwy ffrind, mor falch o'i ddarganfod! Bwyd hyfryd a digon rhesymol, methu penderfynu beth i'w ddewis, popeth yn swnio'n flasus. Food was great service was really slow, took me 20 mins to get the bill and wasn’t offered any drinks
I enjoyed the food and found that great value for money but I felt that the prices of the drinks were a bit steep for what you got but I would be happy to return here again in the future.
Food was really tasty and filling. Didn't stay hot for long though so eat quickly! Excellent value for money and nice to go somewhere different.
Lovely food but service was very poor. Had to ask to order drinks, had to ask to order food, had to ask for more drinks, had to ask for the bill!!!
Great setting for a girlie get together
Fantastic food, cocktails and service
Would highly recommend (and already have!)
We will be back!
I’d been looking forward to the Coconut Tree for some time but I was incredibly disappointed by my experience.
The food was very bland and tasted of nothing. The on the bone chicken curry was just bone and hardly any meat.
On the advice of the waiter, we ordered far too much food.
The decoration in the restaurant was quite good but the chairs were very uncomfortable and the atmosphere was ruined by the loud club music.
I went with a Muslim friend who doesn’t drink alcohol and so ordered a virgin mojito. After she’d taken a large gulp of her drink she realised it contained alcohol. We complained to the waitress who told us that it didn’t contain alcohol but, unconvinced, we asked another member of staff who went away to find out and came back to us and confirmed that it did contain alcohol as the person responsible had misread the order. The waiter offered no apology other than to say “don’t worry, you only had a small amount.” Hardly the point!!
I’ll never set foot in the place again.
Great food. Very authentic Sri Lankan.
Quite informal and a bit noisy but lovely atmosphere.
Very good service.
Loved everything about it
Booked a table and was seated fine then ignored for 20/25 mins and didn’t even get to order a drink. Waitresses constantly walking past and not coming to us so we got up and left.
Service was really slow and the tables are very flimsy but the food was amazing and loads of it!
It’s my second Coconut Tree and not disappointed at all! Love the food and the staff are absolutely amazing too! The only thing I’d change is to maybe add more comfy chairs instead of stools...after a while you really need that chair against your back or you’re slouching...
Again, we opted out for £20 mix dishes and, as I’m gluten-free coeliac, all dishes were safe for me to eat!
Very happy, will be coming back!
Great food, Slack service. Felt like their opening night. No staff cohesion and a little amateur. The concept is not to everyone’s tastes and needed prior explaining. If they said it’s similar to Wagamamma’s and by that I mean when food is cooked it’s randomly served, we’d be ok with that. But often waiting on dishes and letting our food go cold. Too many apologies. Would get a take away though 👍🏼
Frazer was our server and he was very knowledgable and extremely friendly ... Wonderful atmosphere and good food , great music too , will definitely go again ... loved the elephant drinking jugs xx
You just need to get your head around the food it is a tapas style portions are small but nice
Generally very tasty but beware if you decide to go for the £20pp “let them pick the dishes” as they are quite filling and we had about 16/17 dishes between 4 of us and it was way too much. Could have done with 3 persons-worth between 4.
A few of the dishes were quite salty too (the chicken fried rice, chick peas, and one other) and when we pointed it out, the waitress said she’d check it with the kitchen but she never came back.
Worth trying once but wouldn’t rush back.
2nd visit to this amazing place..had a table outside in the sun ..food top class ..will definately come again
Booked it for a work colleagues birthday. The food, atmosphere and decor was so unique! Music was great and the cocktails were delicious! Couldn’t have asked for better service! Would 100% go again!
First time to visit. Absolutely amazing food. So many different flavours. Very helpful staff who recommended dishes. Lively overall experience.
We went on the recommendation of a friend and, as we'd never tried Sri Lankan food before, we thought we'd give it a go.
The food is absolutely delicious! Every dish was really tasty and the cocktails were pretty good too.
Our waiter was really friendly and the food arrived quickly.
When the got the bill it was less than we were expecting . Win win!
Great food and service...some confusion over our pre booked table but we got there in the end. The delicious food came quickly a particular favourite was the egg hopper. We had dined at the Cheltenham Coconut Tree previously a smaller more intimate experience than the new large venue in Cardiff.
The food was unbelievably good, as were the cocktails. The staff were friendly and helpful and the atmosphere was great. Would highly recommend and will definitely be returning!
First time for Sri Lankan street food.. tapas style dishes, a range to choose from. Lovely setting and tiki cocktails
Amazing food, great cocktails. Waitress was really helpful and prices really reasonable. Will definitely be going again!
Very pleasant surroundings and a lovely atmosphere. Staff were attentive and informative about menu. Food was brought out quickly and was very tasty. It wasn’t to everyone’s palate as some dishes were very spicy, would recommend the clay pot fish.. tuna the chick peas and the fat sister a delicious sauce. Definitely worth a visit as a different experience.
Great food - cashew and goat curries were especially good, as well as the kotthu. Nice cocktails. Well decorated and laid out restaurant.
A lovely experience, and highly recommended. Equally great if you're a "Lankan" looking for a taste from home, or you've never had Sri Lankan food before and want to explore something new. The Coconut Tree will provide a fantastic intro to the cuisine from my homeland. The weakest part were the cocktails, but they were still adventurous and worthy of a try. The "Tapas" concept also allows you to try a number of dishes - which is always fantastic fun. I must comment on the service; it was exemplary. It was more comparable to Michelin starred dining than a "normal" restaurant. The attention was ever-present, but never intrusive. Every gaze to a server was met with a polite approach, and a query if all was well. The manager, I believe his name was Bernie(?), served us, and he and his team all provided us with one of the most attentive and friendly dining experiences I've ever had. Thank you to that team, and we will be back!
Very friendly all. Good food, many veggie choices.Chicken curry was delicious. Will go again.Served by Frazer lovely chap.Location convenient .Noise to be reduced but music relaxing.clean toilets. I am a srilankan felt that in Sri Lanka.
Food was tasteless, small portions which suited me but wouldn't suit everyone, not a nice environment really, not sure this was a true reflection on Sri Lankan food, I doubt it.
Highly recommend! The vegan dishes were outstanding and the staff were super friendly! Thank you for an awesome date night!!!!
Excellent spicy street food with creative menu. Fast service and very friendly staff.
Two things they can improve on: (1) proper seats rather than uncomfortable benches;
(2) loud music can be toned down for decent conversations.
