Normally love the coconut tree but last nights meal in oxford was really poor service. Didn’t get our food for over an hour after arrival and then they served the food up telling us they’d run out of one dish! Not made aware earlier and consequently had to pick another dish and wait for it. Not acceptable. Luckily the food makes up for it. Hopefully a one off x
The service was very poor. We had to go find a server each time we wanted to order food, a drink or dessert and then again when we wanted to pay.
The food however was great and good value for money. Would recommend it for the food
Great little place! Friendly and efficient service, staff very knowledgable and helpful. It was a relaxed dining setting, restaurant was clean. The food was delicious and the menu varied - we struggled to narrow down what we wanted which is a rarity when ordering from just the veggie selection, will definitely be back to try more dishes!
Never had Sri Lankan cuisine before, but the £20 mix recommended by the staff was very good value and excellent on the taste buds.
I particularly liked the tapas style servings.
This is the second time coming back to The Coconut Tree, it's an absolutely wonderful restaurant for a dinner and it's full of vibrant life. I don't often go back to the same restaurant because I always like to try different ones because there is an abundance of great food, however I rebooked this as soon as I knew I was going back to Oxford. The food is fantastic and an amazing value for money, both times my partner and very kindly asked the staff to pick for us (neither of us have alleges) and both times have been amazed by the quality of food and the service. The only negative is that the restaurant is quite small so you definitely would have to book to ensure you get a tablet.
Tasty food but it needed a bit of attention to detail.
Everything was brown and orange and cried out for some green herbs, or fresh spring onions or salad.
Friendly staff and efficient service.
Friendly buzzing atmosphere but unfortunately the food was a bit disappointing. We opted for the £20 per head menu which the waitress offered to put together as we had not been before. I am not sure whether it was her choices that didn’t work for me. The curry was tasty enough but it was all a bit dull in terms of texture - could have done with more vegetables maybe. Might try again sometime and choose own dishes next time. The hopper was the highlight.
Very good experience in Oxford. We’ve never been in a Libanese the restaurant and we’ve appreciate this kind of food. We recommend this restaurant.
The food was upmarket, delicious Sri Lankan "street" food and very authentic. We were slightly overcharged for the drinks but this was off-set by great service and being discounted for the error. Special credit to the waiter, Sam, who provided excellent and friendly service throughout the evening.
The food was sensational but the service was not, very inattentive staff.
Super friendly staff, felt really welcome! Food was nice, and plentiful and staff very happy to advise. A tiny mistake was made with our order and they apologised several times (we said no problem and not to worry about it, as it really was a minor problem) and then when we got the bill we were really surprised to have been given a huge discount!! Thank you! Definitely recommended, nice food, good for vegetarians and really buzzy atmosphere. :)
Absolutely amazing atmosphere, food, staff. Drinks a little slow but can’t fault anything else. Wish there was a coconut tree down south!
Good venue and atmosphere
Service is slow
Got the bill wrong
Made a mess of my cake box and misplaced it
Food was outstanding, especially the spicy cuttlefish and Cheesy Colombo (could not get enough of this). All staff members knew the menu very intimately and gave their own personal recommendations.
Dessert was also one of the best we've had (Watalappam). Great ambience. Definitely recommend!!
We visited for a birthday meal and were really impressed. the staff were very helpful, they knew all the dishes on the menu so were able to give recommendations on dishes. the food was really delicious and very well priced. we had to wait a little while for our table as we were the second sitting and the people before us didn't leave when they were supposed to, but the staff gave us two drinks on the house to make up for it.
We would recommend the restaurant and would definitely go back if we visit Oxford again.
I definitely would return to try more dishes and more cocktails!
Wonderful meal. Relatively quiet with a pleasant ambience. Our server was helpful as we had not had Sri Lankan food before. The food was all delicious but quite varied in flavor. Really excellent overall.
Delicious food! Slow drinks service and music so gave it 4stars but close to 5! The Egg Hopper is a must try
Great experience with new flavours. Food was fantastic, the staff were all friendly and efficient. Great value for money, looking forward to going back again soon!
Very much enjoyed our first meal at the Coconut Tree. It is great value for money. It was quite noisy on a Friday evening but that made for a lively atmosphere.
Definitely worth to visit! We've been there on birthday meal,we have tried wide range of delicious, vegan food, also staff was very nice and helpful (especially ladies).
Wonderful dining experience, service, food We would certainly return and recommend to friends. Thanks
a first time at a sri lanken restaurant - will definitely come back again. although a limited menu they were very interesting dishes
Delicious food! Would especially recommend the pineapple curry, the roti, the cuttlefish. Friendly, laid back staff that created a great atmosphere. Definitely would come again, thank you.
Great good and service. Would highly recommend, one of my favourite restaurants in oxford.
The food was delicious and interesting. I was not familiar with many of the items on the menu but the staff were incredibly helpful in explaining what they were and making suggestions. There is a wide range of vegetarian/vegan options and all the items we ordered were great. I would not classify this restaurant as a "cheap eat" but the value for money is excellent and prices are reasonable. I would highly recommend it.
Fab food and very reasonable priced. Our waiter explained what was what about the menu and advised on choices for novice Sri Lankan food eaters like ourselves. Service was good and friendly and staff took time to ask if we were enjoying things.
One slight caution however. We arrived and were seated quickly, then waited 15 minutes to be asked what we wanted to drink and eat- and that was because we had to ask a waiter who was serving another table. After that everything was fantastic though.
Food wasn’t as tasty as expected.
Service was pretty poor, it wasn’t busy and there was plenty of time for the staff to hang around and chat, but every time we wanted something (eg first drinks order, first food order - basic stuff) we had to go get the staff.... it was much better when it first opened
The food was excellent - good quality and very tasty, with an excellent selection of dishes for all dietary choices.
Our only criticism is the noise level. We went on a Friday night and it was so noisy it was impossible to have a conversation at the table, and to hear the staff. Not a place for a nice quiet dinner!
The Sri Lankan food is great and the staff were friendly and helpful though perhaps a little inexperienced. The atmosphere was too noisy for us, as we could hear other people’s conversations very easily and the loud music detracted further from the ambiance. But the authentic and special food itself sold the restaurant for us, and we have already recommended it to friends.
Really delicious food. My first experience of Sri Lankan food and I’m certainly keen for more. All very tasty and seemingly freshly cooked. We shared several small dishes with rotis rather than rice.
I’d booked a table for 12.30 but the door was still locked at 12.35. Young waiter came to open up and was friendly but not proactive! Bit odd as we were the only customers.
Overall a good experience though
Interesting and well thought-out vegetarian and vegan dishes, everything very well prepared. Friendly and helpful staff, nice atmosphere and good prices.
Really great place to eat. Different cuisine, informed and friendly staff, laidback atmosphere.
Unusual to find a Sri Lankan restaurant. Impressed with the food, service and restaurant interior. We will go to this place again
Incredible food and lovely staff, the variety is great and having lots of small portions makes it a better experience for all sorts of eaters.
Would have been helpful if they had told us two if the vegetarian dishes were unavailable when we sat down rather than at point if ordering
Really tasty and fresh - great flavours.
Especially enjoyed the black pork and spicy chicken wings - SriLankan spiced !!
Really good value and great staff.
Will definitely have to try out Bristol branch too!
Overall we had a nice evening but it didn't start well....
No one greeted us and we had to stand around waiting for a while before someone stopped to ask whether we had a table booked. They then proceeded to show us to our table, dump the menus on it and walk off without a word.
We waited 10/15 minutes for another member of staff to take our order and they helpfully explained how the menu worked and was v friendly.
Our food came about 30-40mins after we ordered which was a long wait, especially late in the evening (9pm) and they brought us a free dish to apologise. It was all delicious - especially the cheesy Columbo and the cuttlefish.
Would probably eat here again because the food is truly tasty but the initial service was pretty poor and maybe needs some consideration by the restaurant. The music was also v loud and difficult to have a conversation in.
Lovely food and staff - they just struggled to deal with the business (it was 20 minutes before we got a menu, for example). Still, lovely place, people and menu - would definitely go back - don’t mind rusty service provided they notice and care!
