The Den at St Martins Lane London
The Den Terrace: This summer, St Martins Lane is delighted to be opening its doors onto The Den Terrace to bring you a taste of the tropics, in collaboration with Bacardi Añejo Cuatro. The Den has been transformed into a topical oasis, filled to the brim with palm trees and cacti that will spill out onto the terrace, bringing Caribbean glamour to the heart of London’s Covent Garden.

Abysmal experience: erratic service, food that never arrived - a vegan friend had taken pains to let them know about her dietary requirements a day in advance and these were also mentioned several times to the staff yet not only did they have nothing vegan prepared, she was served ham sandwiches and prosciutto.. It took over 90 mins for her to get any food. Drink orders had to be repeated over and over again in order to finally get anything served to us (g&t, how hard can it be?).. We had to ask the manager to intervene - he explained that his main staff were off sick and these were simply staff he got at a moment’s notice: in these days of Covid 19, that will be more and more common and he should have ensured that the temp staff were closely monitored and helped (which eventually following many complaints did happen..) The food on offer is minimal for the price and the balance is much more on the overly sweet cakes etc than on savoury. We did get our drinks removed from the bill which was appreciated however it didn’t take away from the unnecessarily stressful experience on what should have been a joyous birthday celebration (three people celebrating, one minute tart and candle to share..) ... best avoid The Den if you are out for a special occasion.
I always choose this place to go for afternoon tea and have never been disappointed. Great and friendly staff. Would highly recommend it!
I Went to restaurant few months ago with 11 people and it was amazing.
This time, I really enjoyed the atmosphere for the afternoon tea, the quality of the service and the food.
I highly recommend this place.
Upon arrival I was told there was a problem with my booking because another group had arrived late and were still at the table that had been reserved for my party. Totally understand that afternoon tea is a leisurely affair and wouldn’t want to curtail someone else’s enjoyment, however, I shouldn’t be having to manoeuvre tables and try and figure out whether my friends and our food are going to fit around a table made for two; it was an already known issue when I arrived and could have been sorted pre-emptively. Aside from that initial hiccup, the food was delicious and well presented - but could have done with a little more savoury - the service was friendly, and the atmosphere cosy and festive.
Perfect food, excellent location and lovely waitress
Really didn’t enjoy the food and service was not great
The vegan afternoon tea was okay but not amazing, I’ve had better, the cakes were good but the sandwiches not so much. It was a shame they used gluten free bread and flour in the vegan afternoon tea as it made the sandwiches very dry and the texture of the cakes not as good as they should be because of the gluten free ingredients used. The cakes were beautiful but I would recommend that you have a separate gluten free afternoon tea to the vegan afternoon tea. Also I was frustrated that a service charge was added onto the bill When the afternoon tea is advertised as £35pp, was cosy I hadn’t expected - I would have like to have known about that.
Room was a bit small and dark with interesting decor
Staff were very attentive
Afternoon tea was presented in bird cages
Lovely afternoon tea.
Took my 18 year old niece for a birthday treat for afternoon tea at the Den - it was lovely and quiet and service was very good (lovely waitress even sang happy birthday to my niece when bringing in a special little cake - lovely touch and much appreciated). We were never rushed and tea was refilled regularly to keep it warm. Didn't manage to work our way through all the cakes so got to take them home. A very nice tea experience in a funky venue! Definitely recommended.
The Den is a cosy lounge with easy chairs and coffee tables. The afternoon tea is different in that the conventional sandwich is missing, replaced by acceptable savouries. The sweet element includes a scone with jam and cream (no afternoon tea would feel right without one) and delicious patisserie. The staff are friendly and obliging. We enjoyed our visit.
well worth a visit
an eclectic room with plenty to cast your eyes over whilst you eat and drink.
Food was great, non traditional which was nice for a change
Lovely, quiet and cool spot for a cocktail and a bite to eat before the theatre. Not cheap, but it’s a pretty smart place so prices made sense. Food quality was overall good but not great - delicious asparagus salad but grim not-quite-babaganoush.
At the very end of our stay a rat ran across the room
Good service and atmosphere for business meeting.
Cool, trendy space. We were a little miffed there were no extra sandwiches and we were charged £2 each for the finger sandwiches asked for more of. There was only one server for the whole space and I think she could have used an extra hand! She was absolutely lovely and trying to do everything to make everyone happy, just spread a little thin between all the tables!
We didn't know Den was so dark and looked entirely for happy hour than an afternoon tea. The layout was small but the food was quite good. Overall comparatively a good value for money given it's location. Tragically, a small rat ran across the carpet and near us, which we found just amusing and told the waiter who was embarrassed and not surprised. That's an issue of the city and not the restaurant hygiene but just overall not the right experience.
Great venue for afternoon tea in this classy hotel
The cakes were fantastic. The savoury food was a little bland.
We had to chase to get some orders in, but we were outside.
For the value and the cakes, I would come again.
Intimate decor;great art. Good vegan option pointed out to me; was delicious. Service a little slow but we were outside. The outside “ terrace” is a little shabby and uninspiring. Inside decor is amazing
A lovely location for socialising prior to a night out.
We had an amazing experience having the afternoon tea in this place. The decoration was funny and cozy. The waiters were always attentive, kind and always willing to help you out with the etiquette. I highly recommend it to have afternoon tea. The price is very affordable and you will a great time.
The only problem was that google maps marks the hotel in the opposite sidewalk and as the hotel does not have a sign so you could get lost.
Relaxed. Quite dark so take glasses to read menu!
We booked Afternoon Tea on 30th May 2019 as a little celebration for my daughters 21st Birthday. The service was excellent and our waitress was very pleasant and helpful. It was a relaxed and quiet venue which is just what we wanted. They even provided a little 21st Birthday cake and candle. Highly recommended.
Lovely cosy afternoon tea in the beautifully decorated den. Attentive service and a great quality afternoon tea.
Afternoon was too cake heavy and everything was very large...
We had a lovely afternoon cream tea in The Den, the service was excellent, the food was nice, very filling! Would suggest the Roche dessert be slightly smaller and more sandwiches. The scones were a little dry! It was still worth the money and we had a lovely time! Thank you!
Ordered afternoon tea. After 45 minutes no food or drink. Tea/Coffee came after asking. Asked if food would be much longer, was told "As you're not having the Salmon sandwich, it will take longer". After 1 hour, and many other being served before us, our food arrived. We were told "The kitchen printer ran out of paper as we sent your order through, so the chefs didn't receive it." I asked to speak to the manager to ask why we'd been told to very different reasons for the slow service.
Manager was apologetic, giving us a free glass of fizz and 50% off final bill. However, with so many places offering afternoon tea, we have no need to now return here for sub standard service.
Cakes were nice.... nothing amazing.
Overall, somewhat disappointing.
Outstanding service, we couldn’t have asked for more. The lady who served us (we didn’t catch her name but she had long light brown hair) was so kind and personal. We came for afternoon tea for my mums birthday. The food was delicious and very generous portions
The service was really awful. It took so long just to give our order and then even longer for the tea to arrive and longer still for the food. It definitely hurt the experience overall.
Great spot for afternoon tea. They were understaffed when we went though, which lead to the service being a little slow.
Great birthday afternoon tea very filling and great service. We would highly recommend
Food not as good as previously - usually love the afternoon tea here but they had changed the sandwiches and they weren’t as nice (although desserts were possibly better). Waiting staff are all lovely and helpful.
This was the second time here for Afternoon tea. The first was about 2 years ago on another trip to London. Compared to the first time, this was a bit of a disappointment. The food was still very good, but the thing that had made our first visit so memorable was the presentation of the actual cakes which were amazing. Although these were delicious, the visual creativity was average.
Additionally, this time our service lacked and was almost unpleasant. More than enough food for two to share a single order, we ordered a second glass of prosecco which we expected to be paying for although we easily could have shared the large pot of tea, but it was insisted we purchase another.
But the very worst part of this experience was the fact that some moron decided 5pm was a good time to have a photo shoot in this smallish dark room. A wiser choice would have been to do this shoot in the morning when this room, The Den, chosen for its dark coziness is not being used for Afternoon Tea or after work drinks for those wanting a quiet and low lit experience. Although it was only about 30 minutes, the flood light and continued flashing of the camera was very disturbing indeed and I have a condition that can get set off by flashing lights. You'd think the second pot of tea might have been comped for this inconvenience, but it was not. No apology or even acknowledgement of this happening during something special I was treating my adult daughter to and were expecting a calm quiet experience.
With every restaurant, pub, museum and hotel in London offering Afternoon Tea, we will choose a different venue next time.
Wonderful atmosphere. Like being in your own private club. Comfortable sofas. Food was excellent and the service was outstanding. Would highly recommend and look forward to returning
50th Birthday afternoon tea for my friend. Lovely ambience, great service. Not being an enormous chocolate fan it would be nice to have one cake which isn’t chocolate but that’s just my taste. My friend was happy though. Thanks for making my friends birthday so special.
I wasnt sure about this place but I thought i try it so book in for an afternoon tea.We arrived and greeted by the receptionist. They were very polite and helpful. The place was abit dark compare to other places we ve been. Teas and sandwiches was delicious so definitely would recommend to my friends.
Great service especially for the couple of people in our party with dietary needs.
However, 15% service charge was added to the bill which also had a space for a gratuity we felt that was taking the Mickey!
Brought my girlfriend here for a Valentines treat this weekend and we thoroughly enjoyed it. The afternoon tea had a wonderful variety of savoury and sweet items, all of which were delicious and very filling. We were allowed to take away the final few cakes we couldn't finish in a bag as well. The unlimited hot chocolate was also really nice, and my partner enjoyed her peppermint tea. We were very pleasantly full up for the rest of the day after that, we didn't need an evening meal.
The waitress, Michelle, was cheerful and friendly, making us feel really welcome and cared for. Despite it being a busy afternoon, she was keen and happy to take the time to ensure our absolute comfort, which we really appreciated. She explained the offers available, talked us through all of the savoury and sweet items we were presented with, and checked on us regularly to ensure we were happy and to top up our drinks. And we weren't at all rushed. The 2 hour time slot was more than adequate as it was, but we were allowed to stay and relax for longer, at no extra charge, as the next guests who had reserved our table didn't turn up.
The Den itself is a very relaxing and pleasant room, with interesting artworks on the walls that are worth exploring, along with atmospheric lighting set just at the right level. And the noise level was nice and low, with pleasant and unobtrusive background music, enabling easy conversation.
So thank you to St Martins Lane Hotel for a very memorable, relaxing and enjoyable experience. Would definitely recommend it.
Excellent service for afternoon tea and no pressure to finish quickly. Savoury’s were nice but not excellent desserts were huge and very rich for my liking. I’d prefer smaller options and maybe more choice.
