food and service were great, only downside there were a few things missing from menu.
It's a wonderful environment with enormous potential but in desperate need of better management. My most recent visit was my third. Each time, it's been a little worse than the time before. It's not that the staff are unfriendly, they're simply disorganised. Many of those living nearby have already given up on it, which is a shame because, as I said, it's a wonderful place and it ought to be a success.
Celebrating Mothering Sunday. Great service with staff very willing to help when half our party arrived late. Good food and good value. Thank you.
Was looking forward to dining here, but having read the reviews was concerned. Service was perfect, good looking efficient staff. Ordered Sunday lunch here, nice table upstairs, the tables are well spaced giving you lots of personal space. Decor is superb. I had read that the vegetables were undercooked and that was not wrong, nothing wrong with them just a little crunchy! I'm not a fan of chicken on the bone but I ordered it and was shocked to find it still had some feathers on the leg!! This has now confirmed that I will never order anything on the bone again. I had to cover it up. The meat itself was cooked perfect but I didnt expect that on my plate. For Sunday lunch please serve chicken sliced or just the breast, no one wants to see white feathers on their dinner. My friend had the beef and said it was very good. The lunch comes with unlimited Yorkshire puddings which is a great idea, although the personal gravy boats only have about 4 tablespoons of gravy in them. Overall a good dinner, wouldn't rush back but will return at some point (although wont have the chicken unless it's deboned!)
Beautiful building, lovely decor, tasty food. Staff are so friendly, can't do enough to please.
Returned here after having enjoyed Christmas lunch with friends in December. overall very good but I ordered fish cakes only to be told 10 minutes later that they were not available. It would have been more efficient if the waitress had known this when she handed out the menus.
Having been deprived of my fish cakes I decided to treat myself to my favourite dessert, lemon tart . This arrived without the accompanying berries so it was taken back and then returned still with no berries! At the third attempt they managed to find some underripe strawberries. Overall a convivial lunch in a lovely setting with friendly staff and I'm sure that we shall be back next time our friends are over from Italy.
Had Sunday lunch. Good if you want your 5 a day as had half a plate of a variety of perfectly- cooked veg. Spoilt by rather dry meat. Service started very well, but became poor as it got busy.
Very enjoyable evening, good food and attentive, pleasant service! Would happily return.
You took care of everything to make me and my guest comfortable
As usual, our visit was thoroughly enjoyable and the Duchess of Cornwall remains our favourite place to meet and eat no matter what the occasion. The service is excellent, the food great and we are always made to feel just that 'little bit special'. Can't wait for our next excuse to visit!
First time there. And it was absolutely wonderful there. Food was amazing and staff were friendly and helpful.
Very friendly service and good menu. Unfortunately they had turned the coffee machine off at the bar when we went downstairs to carry on our conversation. Often the case in pubs! Otherwise it might have been 5 stars.
Enjoyed the atmosphere, attentiveness by the staff and service very much. The only thing we were surprised at was the skimpiness of the cheese board we shared, crackers, celery fine but the smallest 3 pieces of cheese we have ever had anywhere.
The service was very slow as they were short-staffed in the kitchen. The waiting staff were good and apologetic. They did offer us a free drink while we waited. The food was good when it arrived
we thoroughly enjoyed our sunday lunch and will be returning soon !
Huge, atmospheric pub/restaurant, very friendly service and quite reasonable will visit again.
We liked the space and the service but the food was rather tasteless
Despite the reviews, I booked a meal for my partners birthday, as we live on Poundbury and I really like the pub atmosphere. It's the first time we had eaten here. The restaurant was cosy, not cramped and atmospheric. The staff were attentive and friendly. The food was sublime. We had three courses, each course came within a good time of ordering and followed the other courses in good time, all be it that the restaurant was full.
We enjoyed the evening immensely and will definitely be returning with friends. Thank you for a great evening
After 15 mins sitting at the table I had to go over to two waiters who were happily chatting in the corner to ask if they would take our drinks order. Not good enough
Great place, very impressed, food good, service excellent.
3 of us ordered chicken and mushroom pie. We counted only 7 pieces of chicken between 3 pies and the mushrooms were tough as old boots. Definitely NOT value for money!!
Me and my partner came here for his birthday. We were greeted by very friendly staff and sat at our table. Our order was taken promptly. However when the starters arrived it started to go downhill. The bruschetta was not nice at all, and I barely ate any of it. I didn't complain, because the staff were nice and I decided to let it go. After the starters were cleared, me and my partner were waiting about 40 mins for our main course. We were just getting fed up when the staff arrived with our food. They apologised for the really long wait, confirming they were aware they had taken too long. I felt a little annoyed they didn't have a word with us sooner, as a quick apology and explanation was all that was needed. The steak I had ordered was terrible! I have never had worse. I asked for it well done, but it was cooked until it was just a blackened burnt stump. At this point I was starving and decided to eat it any way. However after getting half way through, I just couldn't stomach anymore and left the rest. My partner didn't enjoy his food either. At this point I wanted to complain. I would of refused a refund, because I did eat half, but I just wanted to provide feedback. However I felt like the staff were avoiding us, as they didn't come over to check on us and never asked about our food when clearing our half full plates or when we were settling the bill. The restaurant decor was lovely, which is the only reason I gave this 2 stars, but I was embarrassed I took my partner here and won't be back. Shame as we would of likely become regulars.
Did not like being seated ride outside the toilet door as this was supposed to be a treat for my wife's birthday but they did move us one table alone it really is a coincidence but we have been sat there a few times times before very disappointing but a very lovely Christmas tree down stairs
We have visited once before and used the bar, liked the feel of the place and chose to use it as a midway location [Devon / Hampshire] to meet family for a pre christmas get together.
A major reason was the vegetarian choice [3 of 6 being veggie and all eat vegetarian food regularly]. On the day 4 veggie meals were returned as veg was well overcooked and meals not warm - a big disapointment!
Whilst staff then tried to recover the situation the problem obviously lay in the kitchen [we did not pay for the meals]
Having booked a table, we arrived to find no one to greet us. By chance, a passing waitress noticed us at the door and showed us to our table. The main course was served in a reasonable time, but the order for dessert became lost it in the IT system apparently. No one seemed to notice or care that we were waiting 35 minutes until I brought it to the attention of the management who seemed to regard the matter as amusing, and were surprised that I made a fuss.
This place is great - we came away for the night in the hotel and booked a table in the restaurant prior to arriving. The restaurant is upstairs away from the main bar which gives it a quieter ambiance for more intimate dining. Food was excellent - wild mushrooms on toast to start were 'heavenly'. Nice to see British rose veal on the menu and it didn't disappoint. Didn't have room for the desserts but they sounded delicious. Staff attentive but not 'in your face' and wine list had something for every taste and budget.
Very good menu food quality & service. Well worth a visit
Spacious dining area with clean and attractive decor. Food was nice and good value. Service is a little slow even though they were not particularly busy and seemed to have adequate staff on duty. The staff just need to be more attentive. One of the waitresses on duty seemed to be in a bad mood.
Excellent service and cuisine! Professional in every way.
Service slow but staff nice. Nice decor but difficult to hear when sat in middle of the room.
Lovely building with great decor. Staff were really friendly and tables were nicely spaced out so you could chat easily without worrying about disturbing neighbours (handy for girly catch up!). The Sunday lunch was well presented, good choice of veg but sadly the meat was overlooked which let the meal down, the same with the beef and pork. Apparently the burger was great. Portions were good and so puddings didn't tempt us.
Great service and beautiful building just such a shame the food is so so bland!
Breakfast was very good. We dined on two evenings. The steak was excellent. The squid starter was poor, like it came from a freezer. The fish &chips was good. Service was excellent.
Resteraunt noise unpleasant ,food good but cold, veg served 5 minutes after main course.
As a first visit, it was interesting but I will not be returning for a second visit
The service was SO slow - nearly half an hour before drinks arrived and the same time later for coffees! They were definitely not busy either - only 3 tables occupied when we arrived and only 1 when we ordered coffees!
We had sharing plate which was tasty and good value but I won't be going back unless service improves!
Very nice food and good, interesting venue, but very slow. We were there over 90 minutes and only had a main course. Certainly not fast food, but good. Could have had more vegetables, though, so not a particularly healthy option. Good menu range.
The room was lovely, the service was pretty good but the food was disappointing being quite bland and the price of the dessert was a little high considering the portions and the sticky toffee pudding looked more like a flat shortbread - overall a disappointing lunchtime
Great service as soon as we walked in the door topped off by great food, worth every penny.
Visited the Duchess for a birthday meal with the family. Food wasn't great for some of my guests and service was shocking!!!
The menu is the same whether you eat upstairs in the dining room or downstairs in the bar, same both nights, no specials. The food was good to ok, pub food, fish was fresh, large, well cooked. The paper at the bottom of my burger, which was quite tasty, had dissolved under my meal and I think I must've eaten some of it! However we don't like eating off chipped enamel dishes, which we got with both meals, nor having butter placed directly on this old breadboard. Chipped sharp rim of small glass milk bottle served at breakfast too. Breakfast tables still had some crumbs and candle wax from evening before. Beer is very good, decent choice of wines.
