The Eight Bells
Book a table for dinner, eat at the bar or pull the curtains to the Drawing Room, our intimate private dining room that’s perfect for smaller gatherings, dinner parties and informal business meetings.
We enjoyed our dinner at the Eight Bells just before 'lockdown2' - comfortable surrounding, good food and friendly service - we look forward to returning again soon
Excellent food beautiful cooked and presented .. table service also very good
Had a delicious meal in the beautiful historic barn setting of the dining room. Great service and felt completely safe - a wonderful evening.
One of the best Sunday roast dinners we have had outside of home - and the desserts didn't disappoint either - all served by friendly staff - need I say more? - go and try it for yourself ( once we're allowed again!)
Thanks for a great lunch.
Really tasty food at a decent price in a comfortable front room type environment
The staff were very helpful, and necessary precautions were in place re Covid, that made you feel safe.
Excellent service and delicious food, lovely ambiance and very quaffable wine. A wonderful venue.
Great lunch: beautifully cooked beef and the vegetarian choice excellent. Lovely atmosphere and it made for a really memorable day out. Service was extremely high qaulity. Never been before but so glad we came here!
Lovely food, good service in an amazing medieval barn. Food is definitely not your standard pub grub - this is beautifully cooked and served with flair.
A lovely lunch. Service was faultless and a nice ambience. Very Covid safe, we felt in good hands.
Our only small complaint would be that the meal sizes weren’t the same. So my husbands meal (the chicken) was tiny... very small chicken breast, 1 leg meat bonbon, small scrape of parsnip puree compared to my huge (half the plate) steak, lots of chips and tomatoes and mushrooms.
It was all delicious though!
Went for a very belated anniversary meal with my hubby, great menu and a nice mix food delicious the vegan crumble was amazing and my husband hasn't stopped talking about the Fish!
Great food, really pleasant staff, very good Covid procedures
Top form cooking from Dave and his kitchen. Tasty dishes of a good size to fill without stuffing. Lovely wine list topped off an excellent visit.
Lovely old pub with great food. Child & dog friendly too. A great place to start a Sunday walk in the country!
Lovely venue, amazing food for meat eaters and vegetarians. Great cocktails. Felt very safe with current COVID measures. Will return soon.
Love the relaxed feel of this place yet it maintained a high quality contemporary atmosphere in a very old building and very roomy to enable social distancing and covid restrictions to enable you to feel like we are not in a pandemic at all! I definitely would return to try more dishes. The hake was cooked to perfection as was my veg. I also tried my other half halves burger which was delicious with home made fries too! Wine was fab too! Service was second to none and nothing to much trouble and I did not want to leave tbh as could have sat there all afternoon and evening. In front of the real fire.
Food was excellent although menu was quite limited. They ‘forgot’ to order our main course and after quite a wait apologised and we had a further wait while they cooked it. Fortunately we had plenty of time so didn’t matter too much. Spacious lovely place, well Covid safe. No Muzak ( good!)
We enjoyed lovely food in a fantastic, old, dining room. This was a first visit for my two guests and they loved it! The staff were very friendly and helpful and we felt very safe with the Covid measures in place. The sanitizer even had a nice smell! Well done to all. The fish was extremely fresh.
I have been meeting friends there for lunch for a few years and I must say since after Lockdown I have seen many improvements, great food and great service and a beautiful building.
Lovely decor and ambience, it’s a really good looking space. Staff are very helpful and everything went well. Menu felt a little limited and my fish was very salty but otherwise executed very well. Enjoyable lunch.
Food was delicious and the ambiance is lovely. Service was a little slow at times.
Had a lovely early evening meal at The Eight Bells. It’s a beautiful space to relax in and the food was great. Excellent service as well
Always great food and service. Would recommend very highly
Most enjoyable experience, service was vary good, as was the food although my fish was a little fatty from cooking fat but hot and tasty. Perhaps a little on the expensive side for pub fish and chips but again very enjoyable environment and we felt COVID safe.
Well done staff!
Lovely lunch. Catered well for my 3 year old grandson. Delicious food and good service. Felt comfortable with social distancing and standards of hygiene.
The service we received for a midweek lunch was near exemplary. The foods was of the high quality that we expected without being too pretentious. We will return and recommend.
Good good good
Had a great lunch a couple of days ago. Have been to the Eight Bells several times and it didn’t disappoint. There were four of us and we all ordered different dishes. All the food was excellent and I would recommend this place to everyone.
Good food and service. Our first pints of beer were off but they were changed immediately without fuss. Good atmosphere and background music not too loud. An enjoyable meal in pleasant surroundings.
due to my six month old grandson being present we were kindly offered use of the private dining area, which made the experience pleasant for us and also for the other customers, although the child was very quiet and well behaved.
Great service, food was wonderful & they really looked after us well. Thank you Charlie & your colleagues at the Eight Bells.
This is my favourite restaurant in Saffron Walden. Took two friends from Bristol to dinner last Saturday and they were very impressed. The staff are always nice and friendly, the decor is lovely and the food delicious. The Sunday lunches are excellent. A nice assortment of vegetables and choices of how well done the meat is cooked.
Limited choice (and even less choice as had run out of things) and food slow to arrive due to fewer chefs in kitchen. Only served desserts at 9.45pm (sat down at 7.30pm!) so bit rushed as had to be out by 10pm. Better during week than at weekends I think. A bit overpriced too but food tasted nice.
Excellent service, very nice food, and very well organised
Very good food and service. Sadly the car park was full with only three tables taken.
Great history and ambience. My go to dining destination in saffron walden
Great food from an understandably limited menu - all our choices were tasty and well presented. Staff were attentive and friendly. Whole pub was Covid safe in a reassuring way.
As with all the chestnut group, a very pleasurable dining experience. Food and staff excellent. Highly recommend.
We were shown to a good socially distanced table which I could see had recently been wiped down which was reassuring. Food order was taken and we were lucky not to have to wait to long despite food being cooked to order. It was delicious. Would highly recommend.
Lovely building, oodles of character and presented beautifully. The food was very delicious, only wished we lived closer so we can visit again!
