The Eight Bells
Book a table for dinner, eat at the bar or pull the curtains to the Drawing Room, our intimate private dining room that’s perfect for smaller gatherings, dinner parties and informal business meetings.
Great food. If coming for a meal and want to talk, restaurant maybe better option than bar.
Service seemed more attentive in restaurant area too.
But, for a leisurely relaxed meal with no time restraints, bar area works well.
We thought the starters were meagre and over priced, main course ok but top end price wise. Wine in our view fine apart from price, I feel priced at three times retail is ott.
We tried as new ownership and make over but we were disappointed and will not re visit.
We thoroughly enjoyed our meal. The setting was great and the staff attentive and helpful.
Sunday lunch is great. Shame the deserts didn’t offer any gluten free options for my wife apart from ice cream. Not the first time or the last time I will go.
Very good food on the set Sunday menu, well prepared and not overcooked. Beef was nicely matured with good flavour and just the colour I like. The dining environment is fun and stimulating, even if the tables are a little regimented. However, they are far enough apart that you do not overhear the neighbouring conversations. Excellent beers and well kept.
Lovely eve, great service, really friendly staff. Food was very good, slightly pricey perhaps and could do with some more traditional pub grub on the menu, but overall highly recomnend. 😊
Beautiful food and fantastic, friendly staff.
You will not be disappointed 😁👌
Sunday lunch. Food was amazing . Best Sunday roast I’ve had (obvs apart from my mums!) out for some time.
It would be useful to serve smaller plates. The food was lovely but far too much.
Food good, unusual and well-prepared, service excellent. Could have done with the musak turned down
A wonderful birthday party with good food, a wonderful historic barn and our waiter was a gem
I love the Eight Bells. The new decor is great. The menu is consistently good. The wine menu is nice and the staff are always friendly and helpful. Sunday lunch is always excellent. Very tender meat and lots of vegetables.
I was really disappointed when I took a friend for a birthday lunch at the 8 Bells. Having made a booking, we were offered a table in the garden which we took. Only when we sat down, were we told there was no waiter service outside and "if you want anything, you'll have to come and order it from the bar". We were served outside in the end but the food was only OK and expensive for what we had. I won't be returning.
A quaint , old English ,conveniently placed pub /restaurant serving good food with pleasant, helpful service
Will certainly return. Very nice evening, with friends who also want to try other dishes
Lovely refurbishment. The food was delicious. Had a really nice sauvignon blanc Aroha Bay.
Dietary requirements were handled extremely well, with for-thought having been out into the Main & Starters offered to me. Everything was well presented, cooked & service as one would expect.
I would have given 5 stars if the portions had been a little larger (my partners Roast was very acceptable)
The starter was small bread was of course already available on the table!
The main although extremely nice, could (should) have been served with more vegetables (as per the roasts.
However I have no hesitation in recommended &/or revisiting again in the future.
We were very impressed with the new Décor of the Restaurant and by the good level of service we experienced.
Quality of the food was very good and the portion sizes were very generous. We would definitely come back..
This was our first time at the restaurant.
The location was great, quite central with lots of parking. The main meals were quite nice - perhaps a tad overpriced though. The bar staff and serving staff were all great - knowledgeable and attentive. The meal was let down by one dessert which contained a very stale brownie - several days old. Not good - had to leave most of it.
Otherwise a a fairly positive experience. We wish the owners and staff well.
folks, thanks for taking the time to feed back to us, we welcome your comments to help us improve, we would prefer if you let us know when you are here so we can try to fix any issues straight away, as it seems you enjoyed most of your experience i hope you'll be back soon and maybe I can buy you a dessert! thanks Charlie
Very good and Interesting menu choices. Friendly, but not over familiar service. Attentive but did not ‘bother’ us. Excellent ambience. Good value.
Fantastic food and service as always.
New interior looks great! I like the atmosphere and the foods amazing. A good selection of gluten free and it’s clearly marked on the menu. Service is a little slow but there was only one person serving I think. I will be back in again.
Much improved but still need attention to detail.
Lovely reception even though it was the hottest day of the year and stifling hot inside and out and everyone was suffering from the intense heat. But they were still attentive and friendly staff, even if they were melting! Gorgeous food and beautiful surroundings too. Will definitely be back.
Maybe post refurb we’d go back. The space is nice but tired. Service was terrible.
We were looked after by Dan throughout the evening and hisservice was impeccable. The food was excellent although the wife would have appreciated more sea bass on her fish special. Overall a fantastic evening topped off with a complimentary drink each to celebrate our anniversary.
The whole experience was v poor. I know ‘this company v well but worst restaurant in their group by far. A bad property that doesn’t have an ounce of atmosphere. Waiters of a low standard. The menu had at least 4 courses sold out (Tuesday night @ 7.30 ????)
It’s the only restaurant I’ve ever been to which didn’t have any olives , apparently sold out !!! Wow ! I wouldn’t recommend this place to anybody !!!
This was my 36th wedding anniversary and didn’t have an enjoyable evening with my wife, in fact we couldn’t wait to leave.
There isn’t any occasion that I could recommend the Eight Bells to go to.
Great place, excellent food, friendly, attentive service.
I am very fussy and I like my food hot. I have eaten at the 8 bells several times now and have always been pleased with the food, service and the lovely staff.
We each had a lovely Sunday roast dinner. It is a lovey place in a beautiful location. The building itself is stunning. The staff were very attentive and gave us plenty of time between courses. Overall a lovely place to eat.
Yes the food was great .
Could do with more vegetarian food on the menu.
First time visit but will certainly not be the last! Beautiful surroundings and superb food. Thoroughly enjoyed.
This was the first time that I'd been to The Eight Bells having driven past it so many times. It did not disappoint with a great feeling to the dining room. The food was outstanding and the service was very attentive.
We had booked for lunch for 4 and ended eating in the bar, in comfortable armchairs.
The welcome was good and the food was very good, from starters through to main course and desserts.
The only blot was a cheeseboard and dessert, which we ordered were left in the kitchen with no one bringing them out until we chased for them.
Really lovely dining experience. Super historic room, attractive decor, delicious food well presented and served. Accompanied by tasty wines and good ambience. We will be back.
Refreshingly creative and delicious dishes, served with a high level of attentiveness to the diner
Happy relaxed evening. Food good and service friendly
Quintessential English pub in a fabulous small market town, Saffron Walden. Hospitable. Very good food.
Was a friends Birthday, I couldn't fault it and shall certainly come back.
We had a brilliant Sunday lunch in The Eight Bells. It's in a lovely old barn, the food was excellent (we had roast beef, which was perfectly cooked medium and tender), and the service was friendly and professional. We were actually surprised how good it was and we're recommending it to all our friends.
