The Elephant Restaurant
The Elephant is a bright, informal restaurant which overlooks the beautiful Torbay harbour. It was the first restaurant in Torquay to be awarded a Michelin star which it maintains today. We aim to source all our ingredients locally and sustainably, many from our dedicated farm in Brixham. Please feel free to ask our front of house team about anything you are unsure of.
Run by chef proprietor, Simon Hulstone and his wife Katy. Food is cooked by a talented team of chefs and served by friendly, professional team of staff.
All our dishes change regularly depending on which locally grown and reared (many sourced from our dedicated farm) ingredients are at their best.
On special days of the year and our special events a £20 deposit per person is required to secure reservations.
We do not except dogs other than service dogs with prior notice.
The children's menu is only available at lunch for ages 10 and under.
One word, fabulous....
Just everything was amazing. That’s all that can be said. Exquisite and will return every year without fail.
Superb experience from start to finish. Definitely our favourite place to eat. Felt very safe and protected from present virus threat, so hope you are able to stay open. Thank you so much for making my husband's birthday perfect.
Our dining experience at The Elephant Restaurant was a very good one. My wife and I enjoyed our dinner choices, fillet steak for her and Monkfish for me both dishes cooked just right.
The staff were attentive and served us efficiently and with a pleasant demeanour.
We will go again.
It was good to return to the Elephant after a long wait and we were not disappointed. Varied choice of options on the menu. Great tastes that blended well together. Staff were very friendly and efficient. A very enjoyable meal.
Food was good but my started was basic and main was good but not outstanding. Desert was very good. My wife had and outstanding started and desert but main was basic.
My wife asked a question about the wine and the replay was that she is not the right person to ask about wine.
We also had side dished which was recommended but that ruined the main in my opinion.
Been many times cannot fault this restaurant food amazing
Service and staff. Would highly recommend this restaurant.
Looking forward to the next time
We have been to a few mitchlin star restaurants and this was up there as one of the best we have visited
Warm friendly welcome... polite staff... food was amazing. Lively and clean. Can get quite noisy when busy.
As always a lovely dining experience, seamlessly perfect from beginning to finish
Just Faultless Great Food.. There is nothing else that needs to be said
Excellent as always will continue to visit every time we visit Devon
Our 2nd visit and it was just lovely, food was perfection, wine ok and the waitress was fabulous. Only thing I found rude was Maitre d’ who didn’t speak to us once but appeared to run around larger tables who obviously spent more money, waitress got a nice tip though 😉
Good service, marvellous food. Relaxed atmosphere. I advise you to order two sides for two people to share.
Just simply lovely food in the most elegant of surroundings.
The food is prepared and served to the highest standards. The ingredients are perfectly balanced each dish is a new experience for the palate. One of the best restaurants in Europe and I have eaten at many. More than5 star. Congratulations
I was looking forward to trying the tasting menu and I wasn't disappointed. Four hours of sumptuous food and wine, service was spot on, not pushy or absent, just attentive and supportive. The food and matching wine was an experience that I will remember for a long time. Thank you Elephant team, particularly for the thoughtful card and platter, can't wait to return for next year...
We enjoyed a fabulous Birthday meal at The Elephant Restaurant last week during our stay in Devon. We had the taster menu with accompanying wines and it was excellent.
Of particular note were the staff, what lovely waiters and waitresses, always ready with a smile and they were so friendly and professional, a real credit to the restaurant.
We loved the decor of The Elephant and would highly recommend it for that special occasion or just a treat.
We were not disappointed with this restaurant, everything was spot on. We have booked again. It’s hard to satisfy my husband as he was a chef, and than taught it for years.
The portions was just right, just beautiful food. The service was unnoticeable, they were not intrusive, they were busy, but we never waited for service.
Trust me this restaurant is 5 star ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
For a Michelin star restaurant the set lunch is excellent value, great staff and superb food.
This restaurant is a real gem. The food is always exquisite, quality products with subtle flavours. My husband follows a gluten free diet and there is always plenty of choice and adjustments that can be made. They have gluten free bread. The staff are always very welcoming and accommodating. I would have no hesitation in recommending this restaurant.
Believe the hype, this restaurant is the real deal. Excellent all round experience - we will be back.
We had the taster menu and the food was nice but when paying £80 per person you expect the wow factor and unfortunately it didn't have. We left feeling very underwhelmed with our experience and expected the food to be premier league for the price we paid.
Delicious food. We had a lovely evening. Perfect for a special occasion
Excellent food, wine and service. Enjoyed the taster menu with matching wine. Favourite was the monk fish!
Despite asking for the tasting menu, without notice, we were made to feel that it was no trouble by the friendly waiting staff.
The restaurant is well positioned in the town with a pleasant ambiance.
The food was well balanced and full of flavour. Our favourite was the scollops in a pea broth, fantastic. The accompanying wine flight was good value and completed the food beautifully.
Excellent service. Drinks and food were superb, no problems.
Highly recommended. Innovative menu, quality local produce and a great wine list
We always enjoy a visit to this restaurant. To be honest it’s the best place for a fine quality lunch and that’s why we go back time after time.
Great in every way. The service was faultless as was the food.
From the moment we walked in our evening was quite outstanding in every way possible. Introduction , food , drinks , service and staff were all something to be rightly very proud of
We went twice to The Elephant whilst staying in Torquay. We had the tasting menu with wine pairing on the first occasion and chose from the menu on the second. The food, wine and ambience were outstanding both times and we would thoroughly recommend this fine dining experience. The highlight of our trip to Torquay.
I’d been very much looking forward to eating at The Elephant having read and heard so much about it so perhaps my expectations were higher than warranted.
The crab starter we all chose was delicious and imaginative, however I think we all felt the portion size a little on the small side.
My monkfish main was also delicious but again, there wasn’t quite enough of it. The only carbohydrate apparently available to accompany all the mains was a gratin dauphinois. Whilst this too was very good, it clashed somewhat with the Asian flavours of the monkfish. An alternative option might perhaps have been appropriate.
Dessert was the true highlight! An exquisite chocolate mousse and caramel confection which just melted in the mouth so praise indeed for this.
Service was polite and reasonably efficient although not seamless as it should be at this level. Having been given the wine list and made a selection, we were subsequently informed that our choice (and other listings) were not available. I quite understand that this happens but clearly it’s better to inform guests at the outset. By the time we had been left to choose an alternative and this had been delivered to our table, we had nearly finished our first course!
I would certainly eat here again and recommend it to others but no establishment can rest on it’s laurels. Feedback is a gift and I trust that my comments will be accepted as such.
Amazing food as always. Lovely staff, so friendly and helpful.
Our favourite restaurant!
This is a must if you are visiting Torquay or the surrounding area.
We had a wonderful evening, thank you to all the staff for the amazing food, fabulous service and great ambience !
Superb food, wonderful atmosphere, service was friendly and the cocktails were amazing.
Amazing food in a beautiful and very clean restaurant,
Book for lunch for our arrival in Torquay for my 50th birthday weekend, we were not disappointed. The whole dining experience was fabulous. Everyone one in our party, loved their choices and we would definitely recommend this lovely restaurant to anyone visiting the area.
Fabulous meal, very welcoming and attentive staff.
We had a table by the window, and a card and a few chocolates to celebrate my wife's birthday, which was greatly appreciated, and made it special.
We chose the tasting menu as really struggling to chose one dish. All the dishes were fantastic and still couldn’t really pick a favourite after we had tried them all. The service was efficient with all the staff being knowledgeable about the food. Lovely ambiance on a Thursday night and when I commented they said that they have been busy for every lunch and dinner since reopening after lockdown. I can absolutely see why and would recommend a visit to anybody. It was also great to be able to see Simon cooking away in the kitchen and a great happy team
