About The Elephant Restaurant
Welcome to The Elephant Restaurant
The Elephant is a bright, informal restaurant which overlooks the beautiful Torbay harbour. It was the first restaurant in Torquay to be awarded a Michelin star which it maintains today. We aim to source all our ingredients locally and sustainably, many from our dedicated farm in Brixham. Please feel free to ask our front of house team about anything you are unsure of.
Run by chef proprietor, Simon Hulstone and his wife Katy. Food is cooked by a talented team of chefs and served by friendly, professional team of staff.
All our dishes change regularly depending on which locally grown and reared (many sourced from our dedicated farm) ingredients are at their best.

The Elephant Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
Booked at short notice, excellent service from all staff who have a good knowledge of their dishes.
Food was excellent, very interesting, might have been nice if we had been offered choice of cheese. Quite happy to change deserts to suit individual tastes.
In summary, very good food & service at a reasonable price for this type of restaurant
We enjoyed the perfect service and the original tasting menu. The dishes were so perfectly finished and of such originality that we thought that this restaurant deserved a Michelin star. At the end of the meal we realised that Te Elephant actually had a Michelin star. Obviously this place is neither fast food nor a cheap eatery but a high class gastronomic restaurant.
We spent a rare evening without the children having a three course meal at The Elephant. All the staff were friendly, welcoming, attentive and professional. The tables are nicely laid out and of good size with plenty of space between, so we didn't feel at all crowded. There was no intrusive background music, or at least if there was I can't remember it, which is good. The food was as good as I've had anywhere, and the portion sizes were bigger than I expected or have experienced before in a high end restaurant. We both felt nicely full after the three courses. Emma doesn't normally go in much for fish but chose the plaice for main course and loved it. I had a sirloin steak which was of good size and beautifully cooked the way I had asked it to be. The whole meal was around £130 including a bottle of wine, which felt like good value for this quality of experience. Many thanks.
Vey nice lunchtime dining experience. Unfussy décor, great service and excellent food, beautifully presented. The steak from the a la carte menu was perfect, and the desserts irresistible. Dogs are welcome which was a plus for us. The set menu was very reasonably priced but the choices were limited. The a la carte menu was fabulous, and quite expensive, but for a special occasion I would say that this is the best restaurant in Torquay.
The restaurant is situated on the harbour with lovely views. The food was lovely with plenty of choice you also had the option of a taster menu. The staff were very good and friendly. I would recommend this restaurant for anyone who would like somewhere special to go for a meal.
A lovely evening spent within a great atmosphere. The food was amazing. My husband had a crab dish followed by a lamb main. I had duck terrine to start, followed by hake. Desserts were strawberries for my husband and salted caramel tart for myself. All yummy. A lovely way to celebrate our wedding anniversary
Had an outstanding meal here a few days ago. Food quality was very good and they have a comprehensive but reasonably priced wine list. Server made a slight mess up with the order but they addressed it quickly and didn't charge us for the course, which was appreciated. Considering the food and wine that we got through I couldn't complain at all about the bill. My only minor gripe is that I would like to see tablecloths, but maybe I'm just old-fashioned.
We travelled 50 miles to visit The Elephant. It has been in our sights for several year. So as I parked the car in the car park opposite I started to worry in case we would be disappointed.
But as a special treat for our anniversary it was just perfect. Interesting building with some harbour views, staff who had the balance of attentiveness and absence just right. We had the set lunch and were bold over by the presentation and the flavours. Each dish was a surprise washed down with a glass of champagne (I did have to drive the 50 miles home). Next time we won't wait for a special occasion. Afterwards a walk around Torquay was most pleasant.
We were in Devon for a week, staying in Torquay. We're foodies and wanted to treat ourselves on our 2nd wedding anniversary.
We weren't disappointed. Fantastic food, great service and great atmosphere.
Lovely touch from the restaurant to leave us a "Happy Anniversary" card on the table.
Absolutely recommend the Elephant to everyone. Only wish it was on the doorstep!
Had read many glowing reviews and wasn't disappointed when our family of four had Saturday evening dinner. Attentive but not over bearing staff, happy to help throughout the evening. Food was high quality and very tasty and the accompanying wine list was short but, again, suitable and at times unusual (enjoyed a lovely robust Lebanese red). Our kids had a good summary - great food but, even though Michelin starred, was really relaxed.
This was the first time we've dined in a Michelin star restaurant and we were not disappointed. The atmosphere was friendly and the food was outstanding. Every course was beautifully presented and very tasty. The word I used on the night was 'vibrant'. No other restaurant compared during the rest of the week.
We had a pre graduation dinner with our two sons. Elephant is a great place the food was excellent and the staff all very accommodating!
My husband asked for a rare steak which when it came was over cooked. We told the waitress who offered a fresh one but my husband said it was fine as he had eaten most of it!
When we came to pay the bill they hadn't charged for one of the steaks! We did say we would pay for it and we only told them it wasn't rare because unless we tell them it's not right they don't know!
That said we would definitely visit again when next in Torquay.
