The Elephant Restaurant
The Elephant is a bright, informal restaurant which overlooks the beautiful Torbay harbour. It was the first restaurant in Torquay to be awarded a Michelin star which it maintains today. We aim to source all our ingredients locally and sustainably, many from our dedicated farm in Brixham. Please feel free to ask our front of house team about anything you are unsure of.
Run by chef proprietor, Simon Hulstone and his wife Katy. Food is cooked by a talented team of chefs and served by friendly, professional team of staff.
All our dishes change regularly depending on which locally grown and reared (many sourced from our dedicated farm) ingredients are at their best.
On special days of the year and our special events a £20 deposit per person is required to secure reservations.
We do not except dogs other than service dogs with prior notice.
Food was delicious - perfectly cooked fish, excellent oysters, generally top quality with interesting tastes and textures. Choice of wines was good, with an excellent dessert wine, perfectly complementing a choice of pudding. Service was attentive but with well judged informality. We were celebrating a birthday - and there was a birthday card for my husband on the table when we arrived. Would certainly re-visit and recommend to others without reservation.
Fabulous meal as always, food cooked to perfection definitely the best place to eat in the bay
Excellent restaurant, lovely food, friendly & helpful staff. A nice touch was the birthday card for my partner and the chocolate Happy Birthday! Our quibbles would be that we had to pay extra for side dishes on top of an already fully priced main, and the petits fours consisted of one small stick of fudge. Also we might have expected an amuse-bouche at that price. Altogether though it was a very pleasant experience
Another fabulous meal at Elephant Restaurant in Torquay. Everything was perfect and faultless - well done Simon and the whole team. Looking forward to enjoying another lovely meal on Christmas Eve.
A superb meal - a real treat - and such good value for money when you consider the quality of food, environment and service. First rate!
The 10% tip which shouldn't be added unless we decide to do it ourselves turned our lovely meal and celebration night out into a very expensive one with plain water at 4 pound a bottle which was a shame food and service was great but probably wont return as extras you slip on make it not great value
Great food and service, had the lunch set menu and it was superb
Food and service were absolutely outstanding. Such an amazing place and a beautiful dining experience.
Excellent excellent excellent. Cannot fault this fabulous place. Expensive but so worth it.
Food is absolutely amazing! And very good value wines too. Unfortunately the service was not so good on this occasion, had to wait a considerable amount of time to order our starters and mains and then desserts also. (Waiter did apologise both times) Or as attentive as I would expect from a michelin star restaurant, with water and wine being topped up, rather than doing it yourself.
Amazing food, great services and lovely setting, would highly recommend
We had an absolutely superb meal at the Elephant this week. The tasting menu was divine - so many flavours and all so beautifully cooked and presented. I could not pick a favourite course - I would feel too guilty at choosing one over the others!! They were all fabulous. The accompanying wines were all delicious and so well chosen. Incredible food, excellent service - a wonderful night out. To be repeated as soon as possible!
Overpriced and mediocre food. To pay £80 no more than a posh snack is appalling
The most fantastic evening was had. The service was lovely and relaxed. Not pretentious at all.
We had the tasting menu. The food was FANTASTIC! We loved having three fish dishes and the beef was super!. All dishes were well seasoned and perfect portion sizes. The matching wines were excellent also and very reasonable. Definitely be back! And we would highly reccomend!!!
First time of going here and really enjoyed the food and service. It was our birthdays so the card was a nice touch
Absolutely fantastic restaurant, have wanted to visit for a long time and was not disappointed...the food was beautiful (when we finally decided what to have from the delicious sounding menu) the staff friendly but not intrusive and a surprisingly reasonably priced wine list. Just fabulous!!!!!!!
Excellent service, amazing food, definitely worth a visit
The food was excellent and the place was beautiful. We had an extra course of local oysters which at £3 each seemed expensive for smallish oysters, as did adding £2.50 a head for bread and butter (which on a fixed priced menu lunch also seemed like gouging). The potato cake starter was very good, served on a foamed sauce base, the bowl it came in was way too deep and dark to appreciate it properly. The duck was really nice, I personally would have rendered the fat a little more, crisper would have added a textural interest to the dish, the raisin sauce was perfect, the deep fried sage seemed a little dated and did not add to the dish, I would have used a little baby sorrel instead the lemony bitterness would have been a better counterpoint.
We had lunch to try the place out since we are new to the area, there was only one front of house person working, they managed the tables, greeting, bar and sommelier duties but only just.
All in all, a very nice restaurant, with great food but having a star does not mean people don’t care about cost or service (Or the 10% pre added for it)
Having chosen to have the taster menu found far to many fish courses. I must admit I did think that the main course would either th fish or the beef not both. Having said that was not asked as to how we would have like the meat (beef) cooked. No palate cleansers served and as for the petite fours a piece of fudge!
A very pleasant surprise. We arrived not really knowing what to expect other than nice food in a lovely location but it easily exceeded that.
The food was lovely and would easily match or better a more infamous Michelin restaurant.
To meet Simon too was a bonus. Genuinely seemed a great bloke who clearly follows the restaurant World.
I do not want to undermine the Michelin scene in anyway but the value, taste and sheer enjoyment was the best here I have enjoyed for sometime!
I just wish it was more local to where I live!
I would definitely recommend.
An excellent restaurant providing wonderful food in lovely ambience
It’s the best restaurant in Torbay and would recommend
First class service, the meal was well cooked and good presentation, a perfect way to treat my wife on her birthday
Although we have been to Michelin starred restaurants before, and enjoy fine dining, this was not a good example of either. Nothing was particularly awful , the small piece hake itself was delicious. But, there was so very little food, no explanation that the sardine starter was raw - I've enjoyed ceviche and sushi before - very over priced also.
No option given to change to another choice of food when I explained - politely- that the first course wasn't to my taste. This has happened occasionally in less expensive restaurants and I've immediately been offered something else or a refund. The Venison main could fit onto a desert spoon. All sides are charged as extra, and are also very small.
Overall, not good value, nor of a quality to warrant the price.
Amazing food and service. My first experience of Michelin star dining and I thoroughly enjoyed. Recommend the taster menu.
Fantastic all round, food was out of this world and incredible value for money
It was nice to have good food and wine at the roomy table arrangement. Then, we spent the rich and warm time. We will recommend to fridnds.
A wonderful evening to celebrate two family birthdays. We will certainly be back.
Outstanding food. The flavours were incredible. So delicious and the set lunch menu is really excellent value. Lovely service. Thank you to the Elephant team for a lovely afternoon.
We came down to Torquay to watch Barrow play Torquay at the football but wanted somewhere special to eat before the game. Food was excellent as expected. Service was also very good. We had a great lunch and we will be back. Thanks a lot
What a lovely relaxed atmosphere and very nice knowledgable staff.
The food was fabulous and we felt there was enough. Everything was cooked well and the flavours were perfect.
Very good value for money.
I would definitely recommend it
Lovely food and service as always. Highly recommend.
Great food, great service but very pricey, especially drinks (£9.90 for a white wine is excessive).
Lovely food, attentive waiting staff and lovely Birthday touches to the dining experience.
Just perfect. First date with an amazing woman needed an amazing venue. The elephant did not disappoint. Great food, great ambiance, great service, great value for the quality of food.
Once again a fabulous meal , excellent service and fillet steak was probably the best we’ve ever had , all 4 of us thought this . Definitely the best place to dine out in torbay .
Fabulous evening! Incredible taster menu! The usual brilliant service.
One of my favourite restaurants and again, did not disappoint. Menu flowed perfectly, each dish another masterclass in perfect balance and texture.
We chose The Elephant to celebrate our wedding anniversary during a weeks holiday in Torquay. We have been before and enjoyed it very much.
Sadly this time the ambience was not there, 2 front of house staff who neither engaged or gave help and information about the menu. The food however was outstanding but even with starters and desert we had arrived eaten and left within 1 1/2 hours. Not quite the experience we were looking for!
Amazing good food. Lovely restaurant eaten here before and would definately go back.
