The Elephant Restaurant
The Elephant is a bright, informal restaurant which overlooks the beautiful Torbay harbour. It was the first restaurant in Torquay to be awarded a Michelin star which it maintains today. We aim to source all our ingredients locally and sustainably, many from our dedicated farm in Brixham. Please feel free to ask our front of house team about anything you are unsure of.
Run by chef proprietor, Simon Hulstone and his wife Katy. Food is cooked by a talented team of chefs and served by friendly, professional team of staff.
All our dishes change regularly depending on which locally grown and reared (many sourced from our dedicated farm) ingredients are at their best.
We will be running a Valentine's Menu on the 14th, 15th and 16th of February.
A deposit of £20 per person and the usual A La Carte menu will not be available.
You can expect a very fine dining experience with fantastic food and service.
Service very good. Lacking in atmosphere. Food good but quite expensive. More of a one-off experience.
As always The Elephant and Simon and his team never disappoint. The food was stunning, the wines perfect and front of house staff knowledgable, friendly but unobtrusive.
Wonderful food , elegantly presented, by lovely friendly attentive staff ,enjoyed every moment ,will return and recommend to all our friends !
what can you say? one of the best chef's in the country. brilliant😜
Had a lovely meal for my Partners Birthday. Lovely touch with the birthday card and biscuit at the end. Couldn't fault anything.
We hadn't visited the restaurant for a number of years. It was a lovely experience. The food was outstanding, as was the service. We shall be recommending the lunch to friends and family.
My husband enjoyed his food, but I ate from the set lunch menu and was disappointed. The starter, a fish cake, was very over seasoned and was completely dominated by the flavour of aniseed. My husband tasted it and said he could smell the aniseed even before he ate it. My main course was good (a cod dish), but borderline over seasoned. The dessert, which we shared, was from the main menu and was very nice and chocolaty . The service was very good, the staff polite and attentive.
Lovely lunch with hubby, birthday treat from our daughters , food was brilliant and quite chilled , not at all stuffy.
Lovely resturant with a really Hugh standard of food. Great service. The pumpkin soup espically was outstanding.
Second visit .Excellent food.Great service. It is the kind of food you really savour.
Absolutely delicious, can't fault any aspect of The Elephant.
We had an amazing meal here with friends and will be back soon!
First time eating at The Elephant, excellent service and food was amazing! Will definitely recommend to family & friends.
Quality food excellent staff
Will be visiting this restaurant again
Our wedding anniversary
The food was out of this world
It was extremely lovely
The food at The Elephant was absolutely amazing. So much flavour in every single bite. So much attention to detail went into every aspect of the meal as a whole. Great service and food didn’t take long. Overall perfect.
We have been dining at the Elephant for several years and it is always our first choice for food, service & price.
Well I have to say it was a first time there and it was amazing definitely going again. The service from the staff was great and definitely new they stuff about the food. So impressed and the food was amazing highly recommend.
Great food, brilliant service. Would highly recommend visiting this restaurant
Based on Valentine’s Day set menu overall a lovely meal with two puddings but would have preferred a la cart with more choice being a pescatarian. The service was impeccable and staff had noted my dietary preferences, checking what I was ok with. Nice atmosphere, would visit again.
Really good, great food, lovely and well presented.... portions too small though ... really shocked.... I like a big starter , big main and I never eat desert.... this was all wrong with 2 deserts ... I could eat a portion more of scallops starter ... my wife gave me half of her seconds to shut me up ... lovely taste but more req for my buck !!!
Credit to Tom & the feont of house team. Flawless service. Food was incredible.
Beautiful food & a lovely relaxed restaurant . Will definitely be returning
Easy to find and warm welcome to table with view over harbour. Excellent food and service. The only slight negative was a rather noisey party of diners who for whatever reason needed to shoot at each other. I realise this wasnt the restaurants fault and would not stop me from recommending or dining there again.
An outstanding evening. The food was speactacular, a thoroughly enjoyable evening from start to finish
Wonderful dinner except one of the fillet steaks was tough. This was dealt with very well and did not spoil the overall experience. We would definitely return.
Birthday treat, enjoying the tasting menu.
Absolutely fantastic three course lunch. So much attention to detail and the portions were absolutely spot on! From the minute we walked in to the second we left we were made to feel very welcome. Excellent value for what is unquestionably the finest cuisine this side of London! We will definitely be back again!
Having booked a stay at the Cary Arms, well my wife and I wanted to enjoy good food locally. The Elephant has received so many excellent reviews we booked in without even viewing the menu.
It’s not often that our high expectations were met, however at the Elephant they were exceeded. The waitresses face dropped when my answer to her question “is the food ok” was no! It wasn’t “ok” it was wonderful!
The duck starter on a spicy crumpet with fois gras and caramelised onion jam was simply out of this world. The Beef fillet main was similarly lovely and we managed to share a desert - just.
The wine list was extensive, with good quality wines at reasonable prices.
Overall we ate wonderful food, received excellent service and felt it was also very good value.
We would definitely visit again if we are ever in the area.
As always a perfect meal. Excellent choice of dishes a la carte. Each beautifully presented and faultlessly cooked and of course delicious to taste.
Amazing food, well worth a visit. We will be back soon
Overall we enjoyed everything, my only observation would be that my starter of beetroot and mozzarella was far too cold, which made it a bit tasteless. Maybe if it had been a summer day it would have been fine. Wish I had chosen something else;-(
A little Gem! Fantastic food for an amazing price. The staff would be a credit to any establishment.
For food lovers of fine dining an outstanding choice. Tasting menu was a great way to try a good selection of dishes. Definitely worth the trip.
Amazing wood and service. The rump is must. I took my wife for her birthday and we are definitely coming back with our family
The food was excellent, I particularly enjoyed the hake, which was perfectly cooked and with a beautifully crispy skin. The salted caramel tart was a delight, perfectly partnered by the ice cream. The only thing I didn't particularly like was the chutney with the black pudding starter, it was a little too sweet for my taste. Service was attentive without being intrusive. Altogether a very enjoyable experience
It was quiet when we had lunch there as it was out of the tourist season. But the food more than made up for it and the staff were attentive. We did think the restaurant lacked atmosphere (may be different in the evening) and the decor was a bit sparse. But we will definitely return soon for another delicious meal.
My wife and I managed to get a rare day together, and decided on a 2hr trip to have lunch at The Elephant.
Service was good, restaurant was a pleasant setting and food was cooked to perfection, the desserts were delicious and a real demonstration of chef's skill
