The Elephant Restaurant
The Elephant is a bright, informal restaurant which overlooks the beautiful Torbay harbour. It was the first restaurant in Torquay to be awarded a Michelin star which it maintains today. We aim to source all our ingredients locally and sustainably, many from our dedicated farm in Brixham. Please feel free to ask our front of house team about anything you are unsure of.
Run by chef proprietor, Simon Hulstone and his wife Katy. Food is cooked by a talented team of chefs and served by friendly, professional team of staff.
All our dishes change regularly depending on which locally grown and reared (many sourced from our dedicated farm) ingredients are at their best.
On special days of the year and our special events a £20 deposit per person is required to secure reservations.
We do not except dogs other than service dogs with prior notice.
Nice rooms and tables. Not over the top with a calm relaxed ambience.
Great wine selection. Outstanding food. Staff attentive but not in your face.
Best meal I have had for a few years. I would recommend wholeheartedly.
As a newbie at this type of establishment, I was pleasantly surprised. Staff were thorough in their knowledge of the courses and very attentive.
We enjoyed a fabulous meal in Simon Hurston’s The Elephant Restaurant, which has held a Michelin star for 14 years.
Great value fine dining using fresh local ingredients, excellent presentation and friendly efficient service.
We would happily recommend The Elephant to family and friends.
Brilliant service, food was amazing. This was a special evening for us and we can not fault anything. Exquisite.
Excellent food cooked with high quality local ingredients. A special meal.
The food looks beautiful but even better is the clarity and variety of textures and flavours in each dish. The fish is caught across the bay; the vegetables from the chef's farm. The Elephant is not simply worth a detour; I travelled from London to Torquay especially to eat there and it was a splendid evening. I would have gone back the next night but that was a Sunday and it is closed. My only complaint is that it is not closer to London.
Fantastic food and very reasonably priced .. all seasonal produce and would highly recommend the tasting menu.. not too much food and didn’t leave full but was satisfied.. The wine paring is very generous though !
What it says on the proverbial tin. Delivered as expected
Outstanding food if there was to be a criticism I could’ve ate more
Beautifully presented using the best local ingredients, this place delivers on all levels. They also have a set lunch menu which is excellent value.
A lovely meal in a good setting. All the staff were efficient and friendly
Enjoyed a special birthday treat
We visit roughly yearly when we co e to stay in Torquay
We should have come in evening to have taster menu.
Love the food, amazing dessert, raspberry coulis both refreshing and delucious
Beautiful food and Excellent service. Lovely for a special occasion mine was a birthday gift, such a lovely treat.
An excellent meal in a lovely atmosphere The food was very high quality as you would expect but the experience was made perfect by the front of house staff who were so friendly and dealt with lady who we suspect had dementia so kindly
We enjoyed our Golden wedding anniversary meal thankyou.
Superb food, and the best value Michelin dining experience we have ever had.
The tasting menu was delicious. My wife and I had different favourite dishes, but all courses were superb. The service was friendly and informative. Tom & Micky both were very amiable, as was the waitress that served us. However, I would suggest that fly screens be fitted to the open external windows. There were several small flies that were 'buzzing' around whilst we were dining, that were slightly distracting. These were not flies associated with hygiene issues, but were outdoor species that had flown in through the open windows. A small inconvenience that fortunately did not spoil the overall experience. We would most certainly recommend the Elephant to all who would like to indulge in a fine dining experience.
Another excellent lunch at our favourite restaurant in Torquay.
Beautifully presented plates which tasted delicious, friendly and professional staff - a very good restaurant, would highly recommend!
Lovely setting. Amazing service. Beautiful restaurant. Good atmosphere. Food was all very nice but too highly priced.
The Elephant is a great lunch location in Torquay, as it overlooks the Marina. Our food was cooked perfectly, the dishes arrived at just the right pace and the presentation was really good. Our starters were excellent, as you'd expect, my scallops were just cooked right and my wife was very pleased with her risotto. The best dish for both of us was the main, which was the lamb, cooked to perfection and with a beautiful sauce which complimented the flavour of the lamb. The sweets were beautifully made and presented, and rounded the meal off just right. Very enjoyable total experience.
We had an amazing meal at the Elephant Restaurant on Friday night. The food was so very carefully thought about and prepared, and the presentation was faultless. The flavours were wonderful and the food itself perfectly cooked. The service during the meal was good. The only issue was that when we arrived we were left standing for 5 minutes before anyone noticed we had arrived, which was a little uncomfortable, but we soon forgot in the pleasantly relaxed atmosphere.
We shall definitely return.
Excellent service with quality food, great advice from the team if required. You have the table for the evening so no pressure to eat up.
Will definitely be back.
For us, this is absolutely the best dining experience in Torquay. All the food, and we usually have the prix fixe lunch menu, is really phenomenal, very imaginative and unique flavours, perfect size portions.
We had the heritage tomato salad/consommé; the taramasalata (not your Greek holiday version); followed by duck breast for my husband, and the hake for me in a lobster foam; dessert was panna cotta with rhubarb, and sorbet.
This is definitely the place to go for consistently delicious food, Michelin star standard.
Absolutely fabulous food! Excellent service. Highly recommended.
Fantastic food served with knowledge and interest The tasting menu matched with the wine was faultless
How can you complain about the food or the service, or even the ambience at the Elephant? It is all amazing. I had nothing that I didn't like, everything was cooked to perfection and my wine glass was filled by magic every time it was close to being empty.
Would I recommend the Elephant - yes of course, however, it is expensive. I would have liked to have had the tasting menu but at 80 + 35 each for the wine + supplements (I would have had the cheese and the extra wine) it priced it out of the market for us. There was no amuse bouche and no extra's. Our 2 courses with a shared dessert, a bottle of wine and a couple of ports was 150 pound. The Elephant is about the best restaurant that I have been to but I can get the tasting menu for 50 at Jack in the Green, which although it is not quite as good as the Elephant is not 30 GBP off … so value I have to question.
It is hard to be critical but other than very special occasions we would think twice about the Elephant where I would eat once every 4-6 weeks at the Jack in the Green (Exeter)
I have already recommended the Elephant to a friends. Lunçh set menu gives two choices for each course, we tried both each time between us, all very nice. Well presented dishes, well cooked and served, with very friendly and helpful staff.
Our expectations of a 1*Michelin restaurant was absolutely not forfilled.
We compared it with The Netherlands or Begium 1* restaurant.
Food was good but not special. And why "side dishes" (and pying for) in such a restaurant? No "amuses" which are normal to get. No smiles or any communication from the male waiters. So the ambiance was "zero". At the bill, they also had £10,- overpriced our bottle of wine.
For us absolutely NOT a 1* Michelin quality level!!
Third visit, delicious food and pleasant service, good value for money, recommended...
very good food, excellent service. We tried the tasting menu and would recommend to anyone considering. Fabulous experience for a special night out.
As usual an outstanding selection of culinary delights that can only be described innovative and a delight to the palette.
In other words - Bloody marvellous
Fantastic value lunch menu. Incredible flavours. Wanted to lick our plates ! Should be number 1 restaurant in Torquay.
Great service and they made my father in law feel special as they gave him a card for his birthday and wrote HAppy birthday in chocolate
Fabulous food and a great ambience. Staff were friendly and helpful. Had mentioned when booked that it would be my birthday and every member of wishes my a happy birthday and they even wrote a card for me. Just a lovely touch. Looking forward to returning again
We enjoyed you attentive and friendly service as well as the food. It was a great experience staying at your nice Restaurant.
Beautiful restaurant with excellent service and delicious food. Can’t wait to visit again
We were all very pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food and by the chef who delivered such inspirational dishes! The food here was better than quite a few 2 and 3 Michelin star restaurants we have experienced.
We had a lovely evening at the elephant. We had the tasting menu, my wife had the vegetarian option. The food was delicious and the service was great. We would highly recommend the place and would definitely go back if we were in the area
Exceptional service and food. Staff simply amazing.
