The Elephant Restaurant
The Elephant is a bright, informal restaurant which overlooks the beautiful Torbay harbour. It was the first restaurant in Torquay to be awarded a Michelin star which it maintains today. We aim to source all our ingredients locally and sustainably, many from our dedicated farm in Brixham. Please feel free to ask our front of house team about anything you are unsure of.
Run by chef proprietor, Simon Hulstone and his wife Katy. Food is cooked by a talented team of chefs and served by friendly, professional team of staff.
All our dishes change regularly depending on which locally grown and reared (many sourced from our dedicated farm) ingredients are at their best.

Very good meal, but noise created by the arrival of a hen party spoilt the peaceful ambience, as any large party, birthday or otherwise would.
Overall good, but atmosphere a little stuffy. The food very good but flavors in dishes, such as the scallop, were muddled by the sauce.
Absolutely outstanding food and not overly expensive at around £50 per head including wine and an aperitif. The service, whilst very good initially tailed off and became positively poor, which was a great shame as we were having a lovely evening. We waited 20 minutes after requesting the bill and ended up standing by the till, even then I had to go and find someone to take our money! Having said this I can't praise the food enough and would recommend it to anyone who appreciates fine cuisine.
Excellent time and good food
Very good service
Wines not over priced
Each dish should have its own veg. At least veg shouldn’t be charged for.
We felt a bit rushed until Mentioned it
A between course cleanser would have been good.
As regular diners over the years we went with friends and had a lovely lunch. The food was excellent and the staff friendly and efficient as always. This has to be our favourite lunch venue in Torbay.
The food was lovely.atmophere was very nice, friendly staff.will definitely go again
Excellent food and service, and overall an excellent meal, only slight disappointment was the room seemed overly large and lacking in atmosphere, partially due to empty tables.
Excellent food and service though !
My husband and I had not been for some time but we found that it was one of the best dining experience we had enjoyed for a very long time. We have eaten in some wonderful places around the country but this has shown itself to be as good with excellent service, a second time around, whereas other well known restaurants have been disappointing after the first visit. We shall definitely be back for my birthday 🎂 in November.
Everything was faultless. A relaxing lunch with no fuss or pretension, just delicious food served efficiently and unobtrusively. We look forward to another visit. Thanks to all.
The Elephant never fails to disappoint. Superb lunch menu, fantastic service.
Fantastic meal and service will definitely come back
The Elephant was recommended to us, and we will definitely recommend it too!
Food - amazing
Service - brilliant - very warm and friendly and professional
Lovely touches - happy anniversary card on our reserved table and written in chocolate on our desert plate.
We like to plan a little bit of our eating out for when we are on holiday, especially if there are fine dining options. The Elephant was the only place in Torquay we actually thought we would really like to eat at and I am pleased to say we weren't disappointed. Each dish on all three courses was sublime. We were both still talking about the flavours the next day. We even had a decent bottle of wine we had never tried which for a restaurant, was moderately priced. If ever in Torquay again, we will definitely be booking.
Was a really lovely evening! Food was great as was service! We enjoyed the attention we got due to it being our anniversary!
The Elephant is great place to have lunch or dinner its food is lovely and the service is very good. Definitely one of the best restaurants in the area.
As good as always. Great to meet with friends.
what makes things special is when the chef leaves the kitchen to talk to his diners, makes you feel special and completes the experience.
First visit. Thought it would be more formal but it's a moderately noisy brasserie and not what we expected or hoped for for circa £90 a head. 'Nibbles' unattractive and more like pub food. Mains and desserts up to standard thank goodness! Maybe a mint with the coffee? Just lacked the polish we were expecting for a Michelin star restaurant. Maybe I've been watching to much Professional Master Chef!!
Had a fantastic meal here for a first date, food is excellent and the service was great as well. Perfect place if you want to take someone out for a special meal.
Location was right by the harbor with underground parking available right across the road and easy walking distance for all of the nightlife Torquay has to offer.
As ever, a quality meal with excellent touches from a top rate chef
Wonderful food, beautifully presented and absolutely delicious! This is a gem in Devon. Michelin starred and great food from local producers and fresh, fresh fresh! My wife had dined here many times over the years and have ALWAYS enjoyed our meals. Very Impressive variety and unusual presentations to please the eye and palette. The 3 course luncheon menu is fantastic. Hard to choose off the main menu as well.
Wonderful food, fantastic service, would definitely return!
Food exquisite and sustainably sourced very enjoyable birthday celebration
We were all well looked after even our 11 year old daughter
Our favourite restaurant in Torquay always a treat!
Excellent food as expected, scallops, beef & dessert all fabulously tasty. Service was good but didn't seem to be many working on a Sunday evening, waited longer than expected for replacement drinks & for dishes to be cleared away. However waiting staff friendly & knowledgeable except for manager who wasn't at all friendly or welcoming towards us. Recommended for food but if you look slightly out of the norn expect manager to frown upon you.
What a fabulous restaurant, love fine dining and this is in my top 5.
I think this was lovely, I did ask for one item to not be with dish but no replacement was offered by waiting staff but it still all worked perfectly.
I will definitely return on my next visit to Torquay.
Had a truly lovely evening, very good cooking and wine pairings unique and bang on. Even converted the wife to be a scallop lover!
If I want to be purist I would say the only negative was that the level of service dropped off a bit as things got busier, Either there was little time to discuss the course and accompanying wine or lack of knowledge? But that is a very small negative. Will be back
Really enjoyable meal , great staff. Would recommend.
Fantastic restaurant - delicious food & wines,& very friendly attentive service! Love the personal touches - like a phone call to cinfirm booking & especially the birthday card on the table! Can.t wait til next time!
Exceptional food but diminuitive portions . Outstanding service especially from Tom and M(N)icky , and a blonde girl whose name we did not get . A Michelin star restaurant ,yes, but we are talking Torquay here on the English Rustyera not Cannes or Riccione , on the continental riviera equivalents , so a less extravagant pricing policy would be appreciated - unless , of course , the wheel-heeled of Plymouth and Exeter risk the drunk and drugged to drive their high-class SUVs to park in Torbay Road .
Starter of black pudding and bantom egg, plus the maincourse of duck breast both excellent. The pomme dauphinoise bang on only the baked courgettes let the side down being tasteless. Touch of fresh margoram or oregano would of helped lift a bland vegatable out of the duldrums perhaps. We dont drink bottles of wine with our meal any more but the wine by glass ie red rioja was pretty poor maybe the bottle had been open for some time; so maybe will not bother any more. Did not find any half bottles listed. But all in an excellent meal and will certainly look forward to dining there again.
Food was amazing- so full of flavour. It was our anniversary and The Elephant made it a wonderful evening to remember - would highly recommend
My wife and I chose from the a la carte menu and with hindsight the set lunch may have been a better choice (as well as cheaper). The food was ok but not as good as we have found it on previous occasions. Personally I thought there were too many ingredients on each plate (so that individual elements did not shine out) and my wife thought that her scallop starter had been spoiled by an excess of onions. It was as if a la carte at lunchtime was an afterthought and consequently had been prepped using some ingredients that had been made for the dinner service the night before (eg the brown crab meat was dry and heavy going). Also, why is it currently fashionable to serve whipped butter with bread when the local butter is so tasty? I should also mention the staff who were attentive, friendly and nice. Overall we like The Elephant, have been a number of times and will certainly go back. Hopefully we can go in the evening when it will be interesting to see if the food then is of a different standard.
Superb food, welcoming atmosphere, highly professional. Range of people eating there when we went for lunch, from a lone woman diner, to couples of different ages, business people and small family groups. All were treated equally well and with real, calm attention. We were asked about allergies when booking and this was checked on arrival. I went for the vegetarian options because they were really interesting. The beetroot 'samosas' are stunning visually and taste-wise. Highly recommended.
Lovely creative lunch menu and delicious wines it’s our favourite.
No fault with anything about this restaurant. An excellent dining experience. All courses were delightful.
Fantastic experience, earned its Michelin star and then some. Not at all pretentious but brilliant food, great service (fast but not rushed), and beautiful presentation. My deck main was brilliant as were the side green beans and courgettes, fresh from the chef’s garden. Highly recommended.
Worth visiting Torquay just to go to the Elephant. We have had several great lunches and dinners here, and it is always reliably great food. Not cheap, but good value for the standard of the food and service.
Das Essen war sehr lecker und ansprechend angerichtet. Das Ambiente ist zweckmäßig. Der Service wirkt distanziert.
Food was stunning and the set menu was incredible value.
A Michelin star restaurant. So our expectations were high. My starter was forgettable, arancini I recall. The fish mains were divine, although the courgette spaghetti left a watery residue after a while. The sweet was superb, baked custard... just wonderful. Fab service, maybe we will try an evening a la carte. :-)
fantastic food. highly recommend
great chefs, prompt timing on delivering dishes.
polite and friendly staff
