I love the European for breakfast. The coffee is excellent. The avocado on seeded toast with eggs is delicious.
Great atmosphere, great food and wine. Lovely wait staff and thoroughly ‘European’!
Always very good, especially for a work related lunch
Food is always fabulous and a greta wine list. Open late you can always get a great Italian meal at The European
Perfect experience in every way with exception of the bathrooms.....they need a serious renovation.
Absolutely wonderful experience- cannot wait to go back.
The food and wine were superb. A very good service all round, however the experience was somewhat spoiled by an excessively loud background noise. It made it very difficult to chat.
The waite staff are always so well informed when it comes to the menu.
Food and service always spot on and attentive while also managing the fine line of not being intrusive
And coffee is consistently good
We had a Booking after seeing Mama Mia. The night was to celebrate my birthday with my husband and two of my closest friends having eaten here at the European once before and being very happy I thought it was a no-brainer but to my disappointment and we’ll was not the best. My husband and I Shared steak for two and it was full of fat and gristle really disappointing. We Left the fat on the plate so hopefully the Chef could see. For $92 it should have been outstanding like the chateau briand we had on our previous visit.
The duck fat potatoes were nice.
Our favorite restaurant. Has been consistently excellent for many years
Given the wrong duck dish.
Food good but very Expensive. Limited menu. Waiter good but a bit too ingratiating....
Reliable and good quality food. Wine list is over the top but there are some more reasonable choices. Service OK, but had to try a number of times to attract someone's attention to get the bill. Ambience and location good
A Melbourne institution that never lets you down. The service is always exceptional, the food is amazing and plentiful and their wine list is perfect. Their lemon tart is the best I have ever tried!
It was a great experience, staff very professional & food innovative
Excellent wait staff and excellent food. Love the Italian ambience. The atmosphere is classy without being pretentious. Will definitely be back.
Excellent food and service. I would have liked to have the choice to choose a cheaper bottle of wine - we ended up paying $100 for our wine which was very overvalued.
I had the most lovely duck egg with wild mushrooms and red wine sauce... be sure to ask for bread, because you will want to sop up all the beautiful juices with it! Absolutely delicious. With a perfect Scotch and soda. Thank you for such a great traditional restaurant, food, and service. Heart bigly.
An excellent meal! Beautiful steak and horseradish. Lovely wines and friendly service.
Wonderful and genuine European ambience with great food and wine.
Fantastic food and loved the service - friendly but not obtrusive. Good recommendations for food and wine. It can't have been too noisy as I didn't notice - but it wasn't quiet either - just a nice gentle hum of happy people talking.
Outstanding service, with an extensive wine list and exceptional traditional Italian cuisine. Be sure to book in advance and be mindful large groups over nine will require a set menu
Great food, slow disinterested service and extremely noisy
I was seated to a table that was too low in lighting that was difficult for me to read the menu.
Enjoyed a delicious brunch here with a friend and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Good food, great atmosphere and service. Would definitely go back and try other meals.
We loved the food we had , the ambience and attentive service. A great vibe. The recommended wine was excellent too. My husband found it difficult to hear as it is noisy and tales are close together. Also we were unaware we had to leave at 8.30 for the next sitting. I may have overlooked this when I booked. Otherwise we would definitely recommend it for an occasion, more so than casual dining as the bill was higher than we would pay for a meal out normally.
Great atmosphere, fantastic wine selection and exceptional service.
I requested table near the back but we were seated near front door. Staff would not move us. Very noisy so difficult to hear my friends. One guest found her dish was very salty. She informed staff who said to request less salt next time. We found that unusual.
Fantastic value for money if you are looking for top end melbourne dinning experience
We hadn’t been to the European before so it was not only a generous gift voucher but a lovely experience in both exceptional food and great service.
Divine food and generous portion, lovely wine and ambiance. But a couple of negatives - the table was set for 3 but I'd booked for 4. Service was a bit offhand. I thought $11 per bottle of sparkling water that covered 4 small glasses was a bit steep.
The European is simply one of Melbourne's top five or my top five at least. That space, the mood, the food and wine list topped by the most intuitive, delightful staff in the biz. Please stay away I like to be able to get a table. Lawrence Mooney.
The Europen was excellent, as usual. I have been an occasional sdiner there for many years, and this meal was as good as ever. Staff were fabulous - attentive but not cloying. I will continue to go to the European.
Always reliable, the European is the perfect place to have a business lunch or breakfast.
We always enjoy dining at The European; I am yet to be disappointed. For this visit I had already been out to lunch so it was just an exquisite pasta of the day accompanied by several glasses of wine. We dined early but the restaurant was full by the time we departed.
Just a great day...evry part was special...had just been in Europe for 4 weeks...this lunch came in a lot better than 90 % of the meals we had whilst away...
Food ok. French fries were re-fried and didn’t look or taste fresh. The dining room smelled of fish which was off putting when trying to eat dessert.
I have been meaning to dine here for a long time. I went to the ballet and finally got to dine here. The service was fantastic, food delicious and atmosphere cosy. I had the special pasta with aged mince bolognese. The flavour in the sauce was the best I've ever had (I'm Italian and I have tasted great sauce!!). Thanks to the team. I will be back.
The European has never disappointed. The service is excellent, just the right combination of efficient but not intrusive. Food is also excellent.
European is oldie but goodie! I've been coming here for close to 15 years (13 of which i lived in Sydney), so it must be good. A pre/post theater must!
For a belated 30th birthday lunch at a venue I have frequented often in the past, I would have expected considerably better service from almost all staff at The European this weekend, especially considering I dropped almost 1K..
Rude staff.. my guests arrived slightly early (which is just good manners) asked about my booking to only be told to turn around and come back at 1pm, with a healthy dose of attitude. "Yes...and it will be ready at 1pm." No suggestion to take a seat outside and grab a drink, nothing. And then you were late anyway...
It took 45 minutes before we got bread, 30 minutes before we had water, constantly being snapped at by the staff in trying to get their attention.
I appreciate it was a busy day, but you had significant warning to prepare for the booking, and if you can't hire staff to run in a high-pressured environment with some grace and respect then I guess I can't help you. Honestly - you tried your very best all day to ruin a perfectly good lunch - well done...
