The Fat Frog in The Chequers
David and Rebecca have carefully selected wines, real ales, beers and a wide selection of food to suit all taste, and welcome all including kids and fury friends to come and try The Fat Frog in The Chequers.
Everything is homemade in our kitchen, from ice creams, breads, pickles to whipped butters and pastas, we have included foods that will cater for all tastes, but if we have missed anything we can adapt with enough notice.
We had a lovely birthday lunch. Excellent food. Very nice people. Tottaly recommend
The best value food I’ve had in a long time. Top marks
We had a great family Sunday lunch with generous main course (mixed roast!), unusual and tasty starters
Delicious food but can’t warrant the prices for what is a locals’ pub. If the price point was just a bit lower then it would become a regular haunt. Admittedly we we there during pumpkin carving and noise was ridiculous, but it is still vastly overpriced. Such a shame. A meal for two, no desserts and only two drinks was £80.
Decided to pop out for midweek treat - staff very friendly & welcoming as usual and food beautifully prepared & cooked. A super evening.ô
We enjoyed our meal at the Fat Frog very much, food was excellent and reasonably priced and the service good. We will certainly be returning.
Great food, service and reasonable price - Been here a few times, always fantastic - roast and tasting menu both lovely.
Lovely Sunday lunch, the only thing that could have been improved was the temperature of the food, which wasn’t piping hot by the time it arrived at the table, the plates probably could have been hotter. Good quality ingredients, cooked well and service was great. Would go again, it was a very good Sunday pub lunch and was good value for 3 courses.
Fabulous food and service. I would highly recommend this for any occasion. We had a wonderful lunch with a choice of delicious options from a very reasonably priced set menu.
Excellent fixed price lunch, three courses £18. All imaginative and delicious, medium sized portions.
Enjoyable and unusual dishes at excellent value
Lovely rare roast beef Sunday lunch with masses of vegetables and delicious gravy. We spent £150 for four people but considered it good value for excellent mains, desserts and plenty of drinks. Service was quick, friendly and polite. Stayed for hours!
A friend recommended we try The Fat Frog. A distance for us to travel but lived up to all the reviews.
Excellent fresh ingredients in all the menu which made it taste awesome!
Value for money was excellent to. We had the 3course lunch menu.
Would definetly go again. The taster menu is next on the list!
I’m such a fan of the FF! As a vegan I’m frequently disappointed by the lack of imagination and flavour in the food I’m given. Not here! David excelled himself with a potato and mushroom risotto as a start, delicately flavoured and beautifully seasoned. The main a harissa-spices chick pea filo wrap was scrummy. The poached pear with pistachios offered a refreshing dessert. Well fed and well please as always. The meat options are outstanding too!
As always a superb lunch menu full of top notch dishes
Great tasting roast dinner on sundays especially the mixed roast with all the meats!
Fantastic food in a really relaxed setting served by a lovely team . Our first team here and we will definitely be going back.
We received a very warm welcome on arrival. The staff were excellent, friendly and helpful. Service was very efficient and the staff very knowledgeable about the food they were serving. We had the taster menu which was a delight, each course was delicious. We had a very enjoyable evening
Amazing food. Amazing service. Looking forward to visiting again!
Nice local feeling place with superb food. Would happily recommend
very nice staff, very welcoming and attentive. Food was excellent and choice of drinks really good. we would definitely visit again if we were in the area.
We had another excellent lunch yesterday at The Fat Frog. David’s food tasted wonderful and was beautifully cooked. Claire was warm and friendly front of house. Such high quality at amazing value (£16 for 2 courses £18 for 3).
This restaurant has the makings of being very good but lacks some finesse.
Only 2 staff running both the bar and tables.
Website shows a tasting menu but doesn’t mention that you need to prebook this.
Food was very good, beautifully served and fair priced.
The decor was mixed - a confusion between restaurant/ bistro/ bar. Entering from the car park was a scruffy corridor.
We enjoyed our visit but felt the owners need to decide where to pitch the menu and ambience - fine dining or pub grub
Really tasty food, well presented and good value. I really enjoyed the goats cheese and beetroot starter, and my chicken ballotine main was delicious too. My husband had the home cured salmon then the pork, and there were clean plates all round. Cheese board was basic but tasty, and the caramel mousse was a bit too much of one thing for me, but I was quite full by that point! Highly recommended
Fantastic + attentive service, welcoming atmosphere and great food.
It was very good.
My only note is that we bought 2 bottles of wine at 50 quid each and only saw the cork. Would be nice to see th bottle.
Little ambiance but food good. Staff knowledgeable and friendly
Super food, relaxed atmosphere, friendly and helpful staff. Good place for a lunch.
Really good food, I think it’s the best roast I’ve ever had at a pub and the service was really good.
Far far better than your normal pub food, more gastro pub with decent prices.
Lovely pub in the middle of the Oxfordshire countryside. The restaurant was very quiet but this was probably because most people were eating outside. There was an excellent choice of dishes on the menu. My calves liver was slightly over-cooked for my liking but otherwise everything was just right.
Very good food and good service. Maybe a little bit pricy.
Food was truly excellent - couldn't fault this in any way at all. Service was also very attentive and speedy. It's a bit noisy and cramped but that's what you get in a pub. However they are charging up market restaurant prices so I think it's fair to criticise this somewhat.
Another tasty Sunday lunch at the Fat Frog. Beef excellent. Chicken very good. Pork a bit chewy but others thought good. Veggies are tasty and plentiful. We will be back.
Another vegan feast! Once again the wonderfully accommodating chef, Dave, exceeded my vegan expectations and offered a 3-course treat. Carpaccio of yellow courgette with wild garlic and Jersey royals was seasonal, tasty and refreshing. The stuffed cabbage, coated in a rich tomato sauce was piquant and satisfying. My friend enjoyed her goat’s cheese tart. The FF never disappoints.
Dave at the Fat Frog continues to deliver seriously good food at great value for money. Still get the feeling that not too many people know about this little gem in Aston Tirrold. Chefs this good at these menu prices are few and far between so would encourage anyone living locally or even weekenders venturing out from London to give this a try. Menu is always evolving giving regulars the chance to experience more of chefs range of skills.
Only slight gripe was that it would be good to have a wine menu in my hand as soon as I get to the table, but other than that it was really good experience.
Vegan wonderland! Having alerted David that there would be 3 vegans, each celebrating a special occasion, he went to town! A vegan tasting menu, paired with vegan wines par excellence. Delicious, seasonal and creative, the potato and vegan cheddar soup was thick and lush. The Wye asparagus with pesto was delicious and the pastry on the wild mushroom tart was thin and crispy. Service as ever was attentive. We left- happy and indulged.
As ever David was eager to create a vegan option for me amongst my meat eating and vegetarian friends. As ever it met expectations. A stuffed artichoke starter was tasty. The leek main less impressive but still flavoursome. The soya milk tuce pudding was delicious. Friends sampled everything from the beef pie to the potato risotto. Both were satisfied. The other main- a polenta and asparagus dish was also good. Looking forward to a unique vegan tasting experience in April. David is so accommodating and curious with his cookery. I look forward to tasting what he has ready for me next.
The food was great, but the service was a bit slow (albeit very pleasant and friendly). We were there for Sunday lunch and waited ages for orders to be taken, for mains to arrive, and for the bill to come. Staff seemed rushed off their feet. Table wasn't very clean. Decor could do with a spruce up.
But the food was great - everyone really enjoyed their meal.
Overall we enjoyed the evening - celebrating a birthday at The Fat Frog.
Having been in the restaurant in its previous incarnation, as The Sweet Olive, comparisons are inevitable.
We found the food well enough executed, but unremarkable.
The main problem we had was hearing each other speak. With a hard floor, smooth walls, no fabric coverings on the windows, and a low ceiling, noise from neighbouring tables was rather intrusive.
