The Ferry Inn
A 17th Century former smugglers haunt-- this is a pretty little pub in a lovely marshland setting with tables and benches on the front terrace and in the back alongside the riverbank.
Inside it's very easygoing and chatty. The main bar has hop-draped painted beams, a green dado, and stools against the bar where they serve a beer called Oxney Ale specially brewed for the pub by Westerham Brewery.
To the right is a cosy eating area with wheelback chairs-- ideal for a banquette with friends around a few long tables.
Thoroughly enjoyed our evening for our son’s Birthday. Nothing was too much trouble and the staff even blew the balloons up for us. We will certainly be back.
Delicious complex flavours and the best food I've eaten in a very long time. The devilled kidney starter was extra special and I found out later that I could have ordered it as a main meal (next time!!). The guinea fowl was firm and delicate on a bed of brown rich broth. Highly recommended.
Haven’t visited the Ferry Inn for a long time... hard to choose which main meal to have, so many delicious choices. In the end we all settled for the burger and we were not disappointed.
Unfortunately didn’t have room for a pudding: I am not normally a pudding person but the menu looked amazing. So next visit I’m making sure I have room!
The staff were welcoming and friendly and there was a lovely relaxed atmosphere.
So thank you- we had a great evening and will return!
Lovely atmosphere, friendly and speedy service. Unique variety of foods, my favourite is the beef dripped chips! Only improvement I hope to see is a variety of foods for the children so they can have a choice to choose.
Food was delicious . Lovely surroundings and brilliant service
Lovely pub in a lovely setting. Food and service were both excellent, lots of choice and cooked & presented well. Good range of beers, lagers, ciders and gins. Thoroughly recommended.
Excellent meal. Barman was very helpful all night and happy to have a chat about the history of the very old inn.
Restaurant was very noisy - we struggled to hear ourselves chat. I had fish & chips - fish was lovely, but chips a bit greasy. My partner's halloumi burger was nice, & the plum tarte tatin was nice too.
Nice location, food was mediocre and definitely not good value for money, wouldn't go back.
A great lobster lunch made the journey from London very worthwhile. Friendly service and as always a pleasure to visit the Ferry Inn
Great pub great food , one of our favorite places to eat!
For the most part everything was very good. One of our group is vegetarian and the choice for her was very limited she chose the Halloumi burger but found it not to have much taste. One of our group had the Duck breast which he found very tasty but with a small breast only 4 new potatoes and a few beans found the portion a little small. Other mains were 1/2 lobster which my husband said was delicious and Steak and Ale pudding which was lovely. The cheese cake desert was really nice and the cheeseboard was well presented and very tasty. The Camembert starter was also very nice.
We had a very pleasant time and would definitely go again.
The staff were nice although not as friendly as they have been on our previous visits but I think this was due to it being busy.
This is the first time back at the Ferry for me for a while
Whilst I would go back for a drink
The service was ok
Especially when I complained about the two stakes
But as a pub grub restaurant you do not expect to pay £100 plus for one starter two mains and one desert two glasses of wine
After sending the stakes back was told that it would be deducted from the bill.
If it was then it equates to £150!
Staff were polite but food is not on par with the pricing
Maybe I just had a bad night
Dear David Many thanks for your review. We recall your visit and that the edges of your steaks were sadly slightly overaged, and were happy to deduct them from your bill. The bill included 1 starter, 2 desserts, 2 coffees, 2 gin&tonics, 1 small & 3 large glasses of wine and was £71.55. With the steaks it would have been £127.45. We remain terribly sorry that the steaks weren't as they should have been & hope that this explanation of the bill provides you with clarity. Kind regards The Ferry
Friendly lively Gastropub
Excellent meal experience. We chose 2 expensive dishes which were excellently cooked and presented.
Quaint old pub tucked away on Romney Marsh with excellent countryside views.
Friendly and efficient service. Food very good and excellent value. Beer superb, thanks to Goachers from Maidstone, I understand.
Let down by less than clean toilets / hand washing facilities with no soap in the ladies. Pity!
Will go again when next in the area and hope for an improvement.
Great food good service and lovely setting. Our first visit and we will be back!
Another super evening at The Ferry Inn with delicious food, good banter and a happy, relaxed atmosphere. It's a proper country pub - no unnecessary sprucing up - with excellent food. There's something for everyone - good pub classics (some with a bit of an enhancing 'twist') and delicious, innovative 'specials'. The fish dishes never disappoint. The half of Dungeness lobster was exemplary, as was the bouillabaisse with monk fish and lobster - divine!
. . . another enjoyable meal at one of our favourite pubs. Good food, very good and friendly staff, thoroughly recommend it.
The choices are excellent and the food is excellent. All the classic Pub Foods (with a subtle twist), and some other excellent dishes. It is not cheap, but is excellent value.
As always, great service and great food. We sat outside with a sundowner and ate outside too. The overall menu and specials choices were excellent! Thank you...
We really enjoy visiting the Ferry Inn and never been disappointed
The Ferry is a little off the beaten track, but well worth a visit
Sea food is all very fresh, beautifully presented and service to match
A return to an old favorite from our time living in Rye. A change of management sometime
ago was precursor to a rise in fortunes for the Ferry Inn. It has a great position on the outskirts
of Stone in Oxney, plenty of car-parking space, garden back and front and bar and restaurant
space for either full-scale lunch or dinner. However most importantly it has allied a traditional
country pub atmosphere to good food and good service.
Always a lovely place to eat and drink, however, food not as good as previous meals.
When we arrive they did not find out booking. They were not serving us at 8.00 pm as they said the information you site provided was incorrect.
I am very disappointed with both your company and the Ferry.
Fantastic food - a must visit! Fresh local produce very delicious
Nice, friendly environment. Very good food with varied menu - something for everyone, with good sized portions.
Really enjoyed our evening and would certainly recommend.
First visit to the inn and very impressed with the food, value for money considering the quality and great service.
Will definitely be going back now we have discovered this lovely country pub and will be taking friends and family with us.
Lovely pub, where the food is so much better than you might expect. All the starters were delicious and the mains were grand. One big negative in my book was that my steak I asked for rare came out med/welldone. Always undercook a cook a steak if you can't cook it properly for your customer as you can always cook it a bit longer if needed rather than waste a good steak and start again. Proper pub atmosphere with a lovely warm local feel. Would go again and next time make it utterly clear that my steak should be cooked as I asked.
Friendly staff and food was excellent myself and my wife thoroughly enjoyed our meal
Had an enjoyable evening, very welcoming. Food was good however, surprised that a large glass of Rioja was in excess of £10 per glass. It did not appear to be that large and wasn't especially good.
Would suggest having a meal but go careful on the drinks.
The Ferry Inn is a pub as they used to be: relaxed, unpretentious, much loved by its locals and welcoming to outsiders. We did not have any alcohol so I can't rate the wine, but the food was delicious, with great attention to detail - for example, a seriously good salad dressing. I had the scallops, in a slightly sweet, fruity sauce which worked really well; and my friends seemed very happy with their linguine and mushrooms. Given the quality of the food, I was surprised by the tasteless, watery coffee. Since you can get tolerably decent coffee in any petrol station these days, the coffee machine definitely needs updating. However, it did add to the gentle, shabby, going-back-in-time quality of this pub, which I hope will never change. I shall certainly be back.
Good food for lunch time. Service could be better. Inside decor was tired.
Superb local scallops and fish
Come to the Ferry a lot. Food has dipped below usual standards on the last couple of visits. Could be what we chose. Won't stop us returning but worth feeding back. I would still encourage anyone to visit. Friendly, relaxed service and great location. Beer is always well kept.
Dreadful.. starter was awful and couldn’t eat it, it was removed from the bill so that’s something, we had to ask to have the table cleared after starters as it was just left, the service was ridiculously slow..
A cracking pub in a lovely rural environment. We are from rural Norfolk and felt very at home. Food, wine and beer first class. Our only complaint was the plethora of children making a hell of a noise which was a tad annoying . Children should be seen and not heard or not in an adults enviroment like a tavern or pub.
Apart from the rug rats a superb place.
We introduced two new customers to you who were delighted and will be coming back. Everything was fine except for the huge noise coming from two children continuously yelling causing the noise level to affect conversation. I realise that pubs are usually noisy and jovial, part of the experience but this was the only negative note.
Lovely pub and atmosphere had a table booked for 12.45pm but was very disappointed that the only vegetarian option wasn’t available! So I had to choose another option instead of the Sunday lunch that I wanted. Would go again but more veggie options please and make sure you’ve got enough!
