Sunday Lunch
Fine ales and good food await you at The Fighting Cocks. We're a two minute walk from Audley End Station, situated on the edge of the historic village of Wendens Ambo.
The pub has changed a bit over the years since the first reopening on its current site circa 1865. The original pub was located some 500 yards away by the Old Forge in Wendens Ambo and was demolished to make way for the railway. In those days we are told the pub was called “Ye cock in ye hole”
Since taking over in June 2014, we have made some changes of our own to improve the pub. One was changing the pub opening ours. So no more hit and miss, we are open daily

What a wonderful experience. Food was wonderful as was the service. My 11 year old said "I love this places vibe" and I tend to agree with him.
This was our first visit but it won't be our last. Thanks 😁

Great food and lovely staff. Chose this pub from online reviews and was not disappointed. Will visit again. Was perfect for catch up with friends. Extensive gluten free menu. Really good

Quaint country pub, nice food and pleasant friendly service. Sadly as I was driving I could not sample the ale.

Very drab decor, very much in need of a refurb. It was a very warm the day we visited and no windows were open. Service was very poor, we waited over an hour for main course to arrive despite the place being almost empty and then had to ask several times for water, desert etc. Coffee machine broke down And despite saying it was no problem not to have the coffee they eventually bought some very poor Luke warm coffee. The waiting staff were all very pleasant when they did come to the table but stood around chatting behind the bar most of the time. This is all a shame because the food was good.

We booked a table for 9 on Father’s Day and although some of our family were over half an hour late, it wasn’t a problem. We received Good food and great service.

The main oven was out of action the day we visited for lunch, but they still accommodated not only the two of us who had booked but another five who tagged along. We were warned that the food would take longer than usual, but we were not in a hurry and had a pleasant relaxing meal in the sunny garden. The Figthing Cocks ale is highly recommended.

Very disappointed, limited menu ordered ham egg and chips, they didn't have any eggs. Lasgne alternative was far too crispy and made me wonder how long it had been hanging around. Far better pub food is available, unfortunately not here.

Not what I expected to be honest , a small pub/ gastro on the main road. Pub itself is small and felt that tables were too close , we were put in the middle next to another two seater table and didn’t enjoy the close proximity of the table setting.
Dinner was ok , a combo roast meat platter that was hot and tasty.
Garden area could do with a spruce up and the busy road detracts from the ambience

I booked the restaurant based on good reviews on line and we were not disappointed. Two of us had the ribs, one had the meat pudding and one had the Sunday roast. The meals were all fresh, appetizing to look at, very tasty and very filling. Despite that my friend and I both had the sticky toffee pudding for dessert while the ladies shared theirs (a honeycomb cheesecake?) All the desserts were great. Sadly, the coffee machine broke down so we were not able to enjoy a coffee though doubtless it would have been as good as the rest of the meal! The staff were excellent, being helpful, friendly and efficient. Definitely a great find and one to visit again when we go to Saffron Walden.

My dining experience was mixed, some people had an enjoyable meal, however, I did not enjoy my rib eye steak as it was very stringey and very under done even though I had asked for it to be cooked ‘medium’. I did mention this to staff who offered me a free dessert-I took up their offer and had the 3 mini desserts which were lovely.

Simply love this place. Right from our first visit The Landlord and Landlady made a point of introducing themselves. Warm welcomes ever since. Food is fantastic especially as my friend is a veggie and she loves the nut roast.
A great selection on the menu not limited to roasts. Something for everyone, easy to book online and the wine is exquisite. Yums alround

Lovely food, good service and great atmosphere. Booked this after visiting Audley End Train Christmas Experience with my husband, daughter, son in law and 2 year old grand daughter. We arrived earlier than our booking time as it was a very cold day, but were made to feel very welcome. We will be back-soon!
