Fine ales and good food await you at The Fighting Cocks. We're a two minute walk from Audley End Station, situated on the edge of the historic village of Wendens Ambo.
The pub has changed a bit over the years since the first reopening on its current site circa 1865. The original pub was located some 500 yards away by the Old Forge in Wendens Ambo and was demolished to make way for the railway. In those days we are told the pub was called “Ye cock in ye hole”
Since taking over in June 2014, we have made some changes of our own to improve the pub. One was changing the pub opening ours. So no more hit and miss, we are open daily

Excellent experience as always at the Fighting Cocks. A warm welcome from Marie, friendly and attentive waitress and barman. Our food was tasty and freshly cooked. Good value for money. We will be back!

The main oven was out of action the day we visited for lunch, but they still accommodated not only the two of us who had booked but another five who tagged along. We were warned that the food would take longer than usual, but we were not in a hurry and had a pleasant relaxing meal in the sunny garden. The Figthing Cocks ale is highly recommended.

Very disappointed, limited menu ordered ham egg and chips, they didn't have any eggs. Lasgne alternative was far too crispy and made me wonder how long it had been hanging around. Far better pub food is available, unfortunately not here.

The staff at The Fighting Cocks are always excellent, we welcome their new lunch-time menu with its fixed prices for 2 or 3 courses. We will remain regular visitors to this lovely country pub.

Fourth time of dining here and never disappointed. Lovely, freshly cooked food from an extensive menu. Better than your average pub grub. Really good value. Service and atmosphere always excellent too. Highly recommend.

Not what I expected to be honest , a small pub/ gastro on the main road. Pub itself is small and felt that tables were too close , we were put in the middle next to another two seater table and didn’t enjoy the close proximity of the table setting.
Dinner was ok , a combo roast meat platter that was hot and tasty.
Garden area could do with a spruce up and the busy road detracts from the ambience

Excellent food, reasonable service. Garden reasonable (in February!) but for the busy road and (large) slightly untidy car park.

I booked the restaurant based on good reviews on line and we were not disappointed. Two of us had the ribs, one had the meat pudding and one had the Sunday roast. The meals were all fresh, appetizing to look at, very tasty and very filling. Despite that my friend and I both had the sticky toffee pudding for dessert while the ladies shared theirs (a honeycomb cheesecake?) All the desserts were great. Sadly, the coffee machine broke down so we were not able to enjoy a coffee though doubtless it would have been as good as the rest of the meal! The staff were excellent, being helpful, friendly and efficient. Definitely a great find and one to visit again when we go to Saffron Walden.

My dining experience was mixed, some people had an enjoyable meal, however, I did not enjoy my rib eye steak as it was very stringey and very under done even though I had asked for it to be cooked ‘medium’. I did mention this to staff who offered me a free dessert-I took up their offer and had the 3 mini desserts which were lovely.

Simply love this place. Right from our first visit The Landlord and Landlady made a point of introducing themselves. Warm welcomes ever since. Food is fantastic especially as my friend is a veggie and she loves the nut roast.
A great selection on the menu not limited to roasts. Something for everyone, easy to book online and the wine is exquisite. Yums alround

Lovely food, good service and great atmosphere. Booked this after visiting Audley End Train Christmas Experience with my husband, daughter, son in law and 2 year old grand daughter. We arrived earlier than our booking time as it was a very cold day, but were made to feel very welcome. We will be back-soon!

This was our third visit. Not as good as previous visits but still ok. Friendly owner but rest of service had been much better previously and food took a long time to arrive. The two Sunday Roasts were nice and good value. The ribs and chips were nice but didn’t have much bbq glaze. We asked for some bbq sauce to go with the ribs and got a small pot for two people. When this was gone we asked for more and were told they’d have to check as they were running out. An even smaller pot cake out than the first pot. Why serve bbq ribs with little to no glaze/sauce. The ribs are nice but at £16.95 they are towards the upper end of why you should be paying for that cut. It was louder than previous visits but we’ll probably try it again as other visits had been better.

We visited The Fighting Cocks for lunch last Sunday with friends, picking it as a good half-way house between ourselves in Berkshire and our friends in Norfolk. I'm gutted that we don't live nearer as we'd love to be regular visitors. Absolutely delicious food and a warm and friendly atmosphere from the family owners, not rushing us out of our seats when we'd finished. Where to start with the food? - homemade steak pudding was delicious and honeycomb cheesecake with homemade honeycomb ice cream. Everyone else said their lunch was lovely too. Next time we meet up we'll definitely return. Thanks to all, especially the chef!
