The Fish & The Chip

Our menu is a mixture of old school classics and street food influenced dishes. The Fish & The Chip is definitely not your average chippy! All of our batters are gluten free and we fry only using rapeseed oil. All of the dishes we serve (bar the sausages) are lovingly prepped and crafted from scratch in our kitchen. The same applies for all our desserts and ice creams. This allows us to be super allergen friendly and serve quality, fresh food without cheating!
To go alongside the food is our brilliantly fun cocktail list, whatever your tipple we've got it covered and are sure they'll hit the right spot! If you fancy learning how to shake and strain like the best of them book in for our cocktail masterclass!

Great menu, service and pricing but unfortunately there is too much noise in the restaurant, so difficult to have a conversation.
As the venue filled, the volume of people talking got extremely loud and the loud music didn't help. Couldn't wait to get out to go somewhere quieter to have a conversation without shouting over the table! (Fabrics and soft furnishings needed to absorb the volume!)
Had a great reunion with old school friends. Lovely food and good service
Birthday celebration 7 guests Saturday night.. not very busy but music loud competing with loud cocktail party, so made it difficult to to converse. All fish dishes were dried out especially fish burger. Best bit excellent cocktails but two come 10 mins after others. No acknowledgement of b/day. Disappointed.
To expensive for what it is. Good service though and friendly staff.
Good attentive staff.
Place lacked atmosphere and looked a little bland.
Food was ok but we all felt that fresh fish n chips from a our local fishery would have been better.
A little disappointed.
Fantastic tasty food, gluten free batter, good vegetarian & vegan choices & lovely cocktails (even better when it’s happy hour)
Great experience from start to finish! Easy booking, via 'open Table'! Friendly and attentive staff. Tasty food at affordable prices. Good choice of cocktails / happy hour/ value for money. The restaurant could do with a bar/ seating area to enjoy drinks before the meal. Will definitely return!
Great gluten free fish and chips and mushy peas - really helpful staff meant my coeliac daughter could go out and enjoy fish and chips with the family and no worry.
Great restaurant for gluten free meals. Lovely food, great service. Can't wait to go again
Excellent cocktails and choice of veggie options for the veggie in our party. It would be good if there were some daily specials given the fine fish market we have in Leicester. Shame there weren’t more people in for a Saturday night
Great food service and atmosphere! I would highly recommend this place. Will be going back with kids in tow !
Creative Fish and chips and cocktails- what more can you ask for!
Fantastic service, great menu and food! Definitely will be returning!
This isn't the first time I've visited this establishment and there's a reason for it. The atmosphere and ambiance is great, staff are friendly and very welcoming and the menu is extremely versatile and the food is full of flavour. Great vegan options too.
Good food, probably not enough non-battered options, very good gluten free and vegan options. Drinks menu was great as were the staff. Restaurant was quite cold though.
This is the 3rd time we have been here. I like the fact that they are trying to push the boundaries of their menu. It is a 'simple' menu but it is the spices that takes the humble fish and chips to another level.
The starters are also great as we had the crab, squid and peas.
A real nice discovery and a lovely restaurant we will go back to without any hesitation. Lovely freshly made food and great options for vegans with very inventive and original recipes. It was great to have a lot of drinks and cocktails options! The restaurant is lovely and perfect for a dinner for two (not at all what you would expect from your usual fish and chips). The portions are large and you won’t leave feeling hungry! On the day the restaurant was quite cold (it was very cold outside) and we would have been more comfortable with more heating. The waiting staff was really lovely and friendly. The negative point for us was that our main dish was served way too quickly, we were still eating our starters when plates were brought to the table which is not what you expect for a nice dining experience. By the time we were done with the starter we would have needed a few minutes before being served the rest f the meal. A highly recommended place though!
Our first trip to The Fish and Chip after being regular customers of Maiyango. Unfortunately we were disappointed.
First 2 choices of beer were unavailable, starters were very good and thought that if the mains were the same then we'd have a good night. My main course was also unavailable and revised option was tasteless. Ordered skinny fries with the main course and it came with chunky fries. When i raised this i was told that additional fries would be sent out but these did not arrive.
Staff seems too busy messing around with friends at the bar or sitting down (admittedly this was later in the evening).
Also feel that as good as the starters and my wifes main course were, that there is very little else on the menu that would require a second visit.
Excellent food, amazing service
Food was good, and at least they now offer dishes that do not have compulsory portions of chips with everything.
I think that they have issues with the ability of the kitchen to organise what has been ordered, and get the food out in a timely fashion. In our case it was dessert which took half an hour, and led to free coffees being volunteered. At table service was good.
If they learn to adapt the kitchen regime, like they have improved the menu, it will be a good casual eating restaurant
Great service, and food with a quirky twist , unbelievable value for the money , the masala fish is unbelievable
My friends and I decided to go to The Fish and The Chip for a catch up before the festive period, but didn’t want to have a festive meal. When we got there, the place waiter showed up to our table and we looked through the menu - the three of seemed pleased at what the restaurant had to offer. We ordered a vegetarian sharing platter to start with and some halloumi fries - the starters were rather bland and tasted very fishy - offputting for me, as I am a vegetarian.
We ordered, our mains and when they arrived, I noticed that the fries option I had changed wasn’t. The three of us were hugely disappointed but the flavour in the mains and one of my friends ordered taliapa - but was surprised with ‘squid’ which when we asked the waiter what it was, he went to find out, he came back and laughed and said it’s “squid, you got an extra”. We were horrified at this response! The manager then came over and asked us if everything was ok, we explained what happened, he apologised but did not offer any compensation. My friend said she would not be paying for her meal and he agreed.
When the bill came, although we had seen the menu and the prices, were shocked that the bill still came to £50 for 2 meals of ‘fish and chips’ and 3 drinks! This place is not value for money and the food is appalling!
Unfortunately I can’t really say much about this place. Staff were lovely but the food was mediocre. The chips looked like they had been cooked in old oil as there were black bits all over them. Fish was nice. The curry sauce was not to my liking. If I had wanted this type of curry sauce I would have gone to my local balti house. Interior was jazzy.
Food was delicious, cocktails were fab. The restaurant was stylish but friendly
The food was very hot and tasty. Chips are lovely. My only complaint would be need for slightly more mushy peas.
The restaurant, the staff and the ambience were great but the food was average. We all had various versions of fish and chips but the fish was bland tasting and batter no better. Although Leicester is not the best city for good fish and chips we would have expected a fish and chip restaurant to produce tasty classic battered fish.
Although the food and service were very good, I felt that the restaurant lacked ambiance. Going from the wonderful decor of the Maiyango to the awful colour scheme was a bit of a shock. Overall I would recommend it as a casual place to eat nothing special.
I was on holiday in Leicester and booked a table at The Fish & The Chip by Maiyango. I was advised by my friendly waitress that they were having a 're-launch' and was offered a free cocktail to mark the occasion; there was also a DJ playing hits from the 70's, 80's and 90's; it is a small room and the music was quite loud, but it created a good atmosphere. Décor basic. Food was good but nothing special and average price for type of cuisine.
I think this restaurant could do better. The staff are lovely and the atmosphere is great but the food is average. Swap the wooden serving platters for crockery would be my advice. Loved the elderflower and raspberry lemonade though.
Poor experience from the minute we walked into the restaurant. Firstly the food was very disappointing, the fish was over cooked and bland in flavour. The waitress was unhelpful when we were selecting drinks and then proceeded to stand at the bar with the other staff chatting when we wanted assistant. Poor evolution from Maiyango and not worth the money.
Saturday night and we were the only people in the restaurant so the ambience left a lot to be desired. On the plus side the staff were very attentive! Menu is interesting but what's on offer doesn't fit with the internal decor or the hideous restaurant frontage. Not sure what they are trying to achieve - grown-up cocktails and a modern twist on British classics or US diner experience? Either way it really doesn't work.
Excellent quality fish , great sevice and good ambience
We were looking forward to eating at this new restaurant but were badly disappointed. We had fish and chips. The fish was in batter so tough you could do someone major damage with it. How did they do this? The chips were lukewarm. The bill bore no relationship to the quality of the food. We will not be going back.
Great first visit the staff were fantastic with my young nephews and the whirlwind of chaos that follows them around, a great addition to the city and the food was delicious I had the special of the day which was a beautiful fish covered in spiced breadcrumbs. Would have liked a few more chips but then that's just me being picky.
Thoroughly recommended and will be certainly recommending them to all who will listen !.
Interesting take on a traditional dish! Not overly Vegi friendly. Ambience somewhat spoiled by the door being left open on a cold night. Service very friendly. I would eat there again though.
Great place for a girly get together and great music that kept us smiling throughout!
We had a fun evening here and really enjoyed the food and service.
Didn't know what to expect but we will definitely return! A great addition to Leicester!
Amazing evening. Good music. Great food and cocktails. Staff worked really hard to make our party special. Definitely not Maiyango but a whole new experience and probably overall more fun! We will be back give it a try!
Food was excellent, restaurant lacked atmosphere and felt like to was trying too hard to be "modern" and "trendy". Will probably suit student market for casual dining, not really the place for a family celebration meal.
Sadly we didn't know Maiyango had changed and booked for a birthday treat. We loved the previous version so when we arrived it was a bit of a disappointment. We stayed anyway as my husband loves fish. The food was good not excellent, but the music was to loud for a cosy chat and there is nothing Cosy about the new fish and chip place. I am sure it will be popular but we won't be going again.
Great food and cocktails, the service was second to none. Would highly recommend.
