Steak was medium when asked for medium rare. Service wasn’t as good as the previous time when it was all excellent. Never asked how our food was. When the bill came there was £80 of other peoples food and drink added. It was amended but we felt the Manger should have come out to apologies. If it wasn’t for my partner checking I would have just paid.
Lovely, I had the Halibut which was superb, my wife had mussels.
It was that good we just been back for takeaway lunch today
Had several takeaways over the past year, the food was delicious, have recommended to all my friends. Took four friends to dine inside for the first time ,and was not disappointed. Only criticism was having to wait to be seated after booking, when there was no queue and the tables appeared to be set. But overall absolutely fantastic will see you again.
Really nice personal service, made us feel special.
All our meals were lovely.
Service was a bit slow but we didn’t really mind because we were chatting.
Drinks a bit pricey.
Overall we will definitely be back, enjoyed it.
Great place plenty of menu choices for our lunch & def would return and have evening meal
My partner booked the lunch for my birthday & he was prompted online to state if special event
When we were seated waitress said ots a birthday booking & can we offerbyou a glass of prossecco which was loveky and said yes but sadly they just never brought it !! Best not to over promise & under deliver !
Also meal arrived but manus had been removed so we asked the waitress if she could remind us what the meat was on the loaded spanish fries & she just shrugged her shoulders and said she didnt know !!
But we ate told to be grateful that hospitality is short staffed and under staffed etc so this didnt spoil the fabulous food we were served and enjoyed & would return for but it stopped me putting all the 5 stars i wanted to on the review
Lovely setting, beautiful decor, great food and attentive staff. Would highly recommend if you’re looking for a great seafood restaurant near Whitby. We first heard of The Fish Cottage in an article about the best new seafood restaurants in the country and the experience certainly didn’t disappoint!
Food was delicious. Regular cod and chips is very filling. Beautiful white cod in a very light batter and real chips
Top class restaurant! Exceeded our expectations - amazing food! Thank you!
Booked beforehand and were attended to immediately on arrival, all the staff were lovely and friendly, ordered fish and chips all round, beautiful fish and generous portions was reasonably priced, enjoyed our visit and would definitely return, a lovely addition to Sandsend.
Well……… the welcome was underwhelming ,the staff were going through the motions, Front of House person had the social skills of a traffic cone and no one else was on the ball, excluding Carlos the chef . To be fair , food was okay , ice cream superb . It’s a small space to be filled by noisy diners so left promptly . Would we eat there again - No - it’s a competitive market around Whitby and the Fish Cottage doesn’t compete .
An absolutely gorgeous seafood restaurant - don’t miss it!
The meals we both ate were great but a really low number of options for gluten free so this was disappointing. I am sure with some minor adjustments many of the dishes could be gluten free and I would encourage the restaurant to do this.
Warm welcome, good service friendly staff and excellent food.
Very easy booking process and friendly efficient service by the very helpful waitress. Free glass of Prosecco as it was my birthday was a bonus. Only minor criticism was that the very tasty large haddock was far more than I could eat and I would have been quite happy with half the amount of chips. Seemed a shame to leave food on the plate. Also the sauce on the Pirri pirri and the monkfish courses was very similar. Otherwise an excellent lunch
Would definitely book again. Thankyou.
Fish was superb but chips were cold, clearly had been on the plate 5 minutes or more before serving; pity otherwise it would be 5 stars and a worthy competitor to the Magpie Cafe.
Lovely little spot to stop off with the family. Really good selection of dishes to choose from with very fresh food.
Amazing seabass and white wine, lovely atmosphere! Waitress was fab. When they found out we were on honeymoon they generously gave us 2 lovely glasses of rosé prosecco on the house. Highly recommend.
Having looked forward to visiting this restaurant, our first restaurant visit since the Covid pandemic, sadly this was overall an extremely disappointing experience. The food was only very average, verging on poor (for example the lobster had been overcooked and was leathery) and consequently we felt the food was over priced and certainly not in line with the prices charged. The staff were literally running around and dropping things! Although they tried hard the service was poor and we were not even offered a desert menu, additional drinks or coffees. We will try the take-away fish and chips next time which we have heard are very good.
Absolutely amazing food, and fabulous service! The staff was super friendly and accommodating. The chefs created some amazing dishes. We will for sure be back!
Lovely atmosphere in a rustic but bright building with attentive but not intrusive waitress. Food was well cooked , delicious without frills. Very enjoyable. Would definitely go again
Disappointing second visit as quite a few meals were unavailable, however the waitress was so pleasant and embarrassed at the reduced choice.
Overall food was very good as previous visits to the Fish Cottage but the sharing Seafood platter our friends ordered for 2 was disappointing (3 Oysters and only 1 Kebab) requested bread but none appeared.
We have been to the fish cottage multiple times to take out. Every time was amazing. This was the first time we’d eaten inside. Everything was 10/10. I’d especially recommend the seafood linguine. It was outstanding. Will definitely return and recommend x
We have traveled the world and this was the best seafood linguine I’ve ever tasted. We also had the fish platter to share…the menu was so good we couldn’t decide and this was a great way to have a bit of everything!
Lovely atmosphere, the kids played outside where we could keep an eye on them and afterwards we watched the sun go down on the beach. The most amazing wedding anniversary at one of our favourite sea food restaurants in the world!!!
Lovely food only issue was we were given menus, we spent time choosing then I decided on moules and frites were then told no moules and frites. Just would be better to be told when given the menu if something no longer available
Beautiful food presentation beautiful service fantastic
Lovely food fabulous portion sizes and menu choice, but was made to feel quite rushed 3 of us with starters and main courses all done and dusted within 45/50 minutes and plates taken away whilst others were still eating… ideal if you don’t want to linger over your food but would make me think twice about coming later on an evening with friends as don’t want to feel rushed. This said we will definitely return.
Amazing restaurant! Can’t wait to go back. A must visit!
Family meal for birthday celebration. Staff were very efficient friendly and professional.
Food well presented, and delicious.
Fish tacos were delicious and nice to have a change from the usual fish and chips.
The child’s portion of fish bites chips and peas was well received by my 2 year old grand daughter.
All in all a perfect evening and excellent prices.
Will be visiting again very soon I hope.
Visited for the first time yesterday - will be back. Highly recommend
It was lovely the quality of food was fabulous . We had a wait for the food but it was cooked fresh
Great menu - really spoilt for choice and lots of things I haven’t seen before. We all had mussels which were amazing - best mussels I’ve had in UK. Nice decor, good service. Only downside is parking - there isn’t really any but plenty nearby.
We had fabulous food and the service was also very good however we were rushed towards the end of the evening.
We were very much looking forward to our visit to the Fish Cottage
We had booked a table for 6pm but as we arrived about 20 minutes early we decided to sit outside on the lovely decking area in the sunshine enjoying a pre dinner drink
At 6pm we were shown to our table.
We chose a starters and main courses. Our starters arrived within 5 minutes. Which we both enjoyed I would say our main course arrived about 5 minutes after we had finished starters
We then swiftly asked if we wanted desserts. We felt quite rushed and would have much rather preferred a more leisurely meal with time to digest each course and enjoy our wine
All told we were probably at our table for 45 minutes , which when you are spending around £100.00 doesn’t feel good value for money
It's expensive for what it is, we had oysters to start and they didn't taste that fresh (the salty sea taste expected), we had lobster take away the evening before and for £38 (x2 half lobster and chips) it was average and when we asked for salt and vinegar it was a case of find them yourself which was annoying.
The welcome and service was indifferent and didn't get a goodbye when we left etc. I felt that it relies on being the only real option along that stretch ...
Excellent food price a bit heavy but would go again.
Very disappointing the large haddock was poor quality, wet and slimy, tasteless.
The other main course, seafood kebab was very disappointing too, 4 pieces of fish , 1 we think was tuna was inedible. The rest comprised of onions and peppers.
We will not be returning.
A wonderful meal, everything we ate was delicious. The staff were attentive but not over bearing and the food was excellent. We will definitely be back. If you love your fish go here you won't be disappointed.
Brilliant fast service and delicious food. My wife had the fish kebab and I had the cod on a bed of butter beans, chorizo and pepper - superb.
Staff friendly, food great but the table we sat at had a lot of flies buzzing around. When asked to move tables we weren’t able even though a few were available.
