Great quality food and and amazing service. Our Sunday roast was very filling and couldn’t fault anything.
Great spot for a relaxed lunch with friends. The food was good and arrived quickly and the service was grown up helpful rather than formulaic over polite - we really enjoyed it.
The service was really bad. We had to ask for someone to take our order; we were not offered the specials; we were not offered dessert. General lack of interest and apathy. Food mediocre and menu very unexciting. Really need to up their game. Very poor and will not return ever.
We visited for Sunday lunch. The food itself was ok. Average - nothing special. Asked for roast beef pink and it was well done. The veg with it and potatoes were cold (we also waited 2hrs from sitting down to receiving main meal!!!). The apple crumble was mushy rather than crispy and crumbly. Service was extremely slow...
We sat at one of the bar tables, unfortunately very noisy. Waitress was very busy so service was slow. Food was great. Will definitely go back and hopefully sit at a proper table next time!
Excellent food, service and location. Highly recommend for the value.
Thank you for the delicious lamb shank....Lovely friendly service too.
As always staff were very attentive and the atmosphere was great. Definitely recommend booking here as it gets busy. Great choice of food and it was delicious.
Went for Sunday lunch with family including two children. We were accommodated at a nice table and children catered for well. Even though their meals were generous, we only paid half price for them. The food was very good and service friendly and reasonably efficient considering the restaurant was very busy. We all enjoyed our lunch.
Always a good experience!
we celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary with friends. Great meal with outstanding service. Didn't mention our anniversary but when they discovered it, four glasses of bubbly appeared - lovely touch. I use the Fishes for business meetings/lunches and it's first rate in every respect.
Beautiful place great food and delightful service -must be really glorious outside too in Summer -coming back then, if not before, though not a local, but it is very close to Oxford you need a car or taxi but easy to find a parking space for weekday lunch though may be harder peak times of day in Summer,
great weekday menu deals too, made it exceptional value!
Atmospheric village pub, very cosy and lovely food. Service was very friendly and attentive. Food was in general very good, although a bit over-priced. Overall a lovely place in summer or winter!
Had to wait 20 minutes past booking time for our table to be ready (restaurant very busy with Christmas parties) but everything else was great. Friendly efficient staff and the excellent quality food was cooked to perfection. Set Christmas menu option reasonably priced with a good selection. Good range of drinks all fairly priced.
Good service. Young staff coped cheerfully in a very busy pub and restaurant. Made a happy family occasion. Highly recommended.
Excellent food, attentive service, felt valued, servings were generous. Time between courses felt perfect. I would recommend and will be going again.
Almost everything I wanted to order off the menu was not available including a salad and this on a Tuesday evening at 8pm. The waitress was embarrassed and did offer a free dessert. The food was poor and expensive for what it was and two pints of lemonade with a squirt of lime cordial was almost £9.00. This restaurant used to be good but I would not recommend it.
Always a pretty place and great service but this time they lacked some stuff on the menu and the sole was incredibly small, bony and dull.
Disappointing food experience. Soup special for the day tasted stale, the fish cake was dry and hard and better suited as a ball, the hamburger was OK except for an over-compacted patty. The skinny fries were the only memorable (side) dish.
Great food and good value fixed price menu at lunchtime. A beautiful setting with lots of outdoor seating,
The restaurant was very busy and the service was slow to start with. We actually had to go and get our own water even though we’d been told it was coming. The food certainly was very tasty, I had the salmon with chilli (Sunday special) while others went for the roast dinners. No complaints there at all. I had the cheesecake for dessert which had a lovely summer fruit topping, but the base was a bit hard to break.
The atmosphere was very good and it was nice that the children could wander outside and explore between courses.
Overall it was a pleasant dining experience and we shall be returning soon.
Will definitely be returning, lovely setting, friendly service.
Walked out after being patronised and feeling like we were in the way
The food (Sunday roast) was a bit cold, and we waited 1:30hrs for our food to arrive. Luckily we were not starving and children had iPads to entertain themselves.
Nice food and lovely setting but very slow service unfortunately.
Lovely village pub with a very large garden and outdoor seating options. Service was good and food was served reasonably fast. Food was great although a bit overpriced. Well worth a visit!
This is a very nice location and the food is quite okay though a bit over-priced. On this visit, however, the service was quite atrocious and actually interfered with enjoying the meal.
Lovely food, setting and see
Lovely sunny day to sit outside on the deck. We ate mains of noodles and the risotto which were delicious and good sized portions with a couple of wines by the glass. Will definitely come back.
Not bad food with prices at a reasonable level. Generally very noisy, chatter, when busy.
WATCH the sneaky unlabelled automatic additon of tip/service charge on the bill and do not pay twice by mistake.
Dining at the Fishes is always a pleasant experience. The staff are very friendly and always make that effort to engage with you.
I can with my Mum and son on Easter Sunday, Mum has Altzimers so gets very muddled, the staff were very good. Will be going again. Rosemarie
We were directly across from the door so every time someone came in and out it was freezing! Main meal was lovely, the pudding not so great, it advertised fresh raspberries in it, there were none we did mention it and waitress brought some out, smallest scoop of ice cream on record with tons of whip, totally dissapointing pudding!
Our favourite spot to meet friends as it’s halfway between us, and Fishes never disappoints. Go early for a top roast
Great meal, really friendly staff. Highly recommend.
Great location, will be back soon
We loves The Fishes. An open table discovery as we drove through the countryside and planned a dinner before driving back into London. The ambiance was great, service lovely. Opted for a range of appetizers to sample more of the food options and was not disappointed (mackerel, pig cheek, and smashed potatoes? Count me in). Would come back any time in or near oxford and recommend to anyone nearby.
Lovely meal... recommend the vegetarian Wellington... will definitely visit again
It was a cozy Christmas celebration and absolutely beautiful. Thank you!
A lovely place to have lunch and overall we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The food was very nice.
The service was a little slow at times, but always with a smile.
My only gripe with the food was that the 'creamy mushroom' starter was completely lacking in cream, unless it was very, very subtle!
It was child friendly, and our 18 month old seemed to enjoy the sausages :)
Not our first visit to The Fishes, but we still found the atmosphere and service to be great, and food & drink was varied, delicious, and good value - but you need to book in advance for busy periods like Sunday lunches! We're glad we did, as we had a delightful afternoon with friends over a roast!
My party of 6 had a very pleasant Sunday roast. Service was fabulous - even offered extra potatoes. We also enjoyed the outside area for a lovely early evening drink.
