The George Brasserie
We enjoyed the Friday night special so much we booked another table for next Friday!!
Karen & Mum
Friends and I were visiting the clothes shop attached to the George Hotel, having shopped we had lunch. This is not the first time that we have made this outing together. Sadly the staff are very slow, forgetful and apparently not terribly interested in their customers - quite unlike the clothes shop where the staff are simply superb!
The menu choices were strange far too many deep fried goods for lunchtime. Even the chicken breast main course I had was deep fried. The fish cakes were very heavy and I think it explained all when the friends I was with, who all chose the fishcakes, left more than 50% of them. We mentioned our disappointment to the waitress who did nothing to appease the situation. We'll certainly be returning to the shop to buy clothes but will be looking elsewhere for our lunch!
Food excellent, flavour and presentation, but portion size of our meals - venison medallions - was rediculously small for the price!
Great food and service. Would recommend to others and will definitely eat there again.
Wonderful service - really comfortable here but it’s still special. Great food and wine.
Always a very good experience friendly staff, excellent service & great food
Keep up the good work
The starter and dessert were excellent. The salmon main course would also have been but unfortunately it lacked seasoning.
We often stop
Here for lunch to break a family journey on the A1, the food is good, the ambiance good, the staff good
When you see three senior members of staff talking together, with their backs to the customers for approximately five minutes you know that customer service is not going to be high on their priority list. True enough, it took at ten minutes waiting time for menus to arrive.
The staff were understanding about the late arrival of two of my fellow diners.
Fabulous Sunday lunch. Bit slow service , which was tricky with four unders 10s and staff missed a "easy win" by ensuring all under 10s fed first.... Happy children = happy parents.
Food quality fabulous
We had a wonderful time for my Grandparents 50th Wedding Anniversary. The staff were attentive and polite, the food was phenomenal and they even provided a little plate of truffles at the end of the meal as a congratulations! I would highly recommend.
We all had a lovely time on Friday night. Two of us are particular foodies and I was a bit nervous asking them to this event as they have been to many other events of a similar nature. Happily, nothing disappointed them and in fact they thanked me the following day for bringing them along. We met up with (in my case) old friends from the past - all of which was good fun. We all look forward to the next one.
Finally, it was great to see Annie and Richard enjoying the meal longside us all - it all felt very special
We got married here - the service and food is exceptional. Slightly on the more expensive side (roughly £15-£20 for a main meal) but definitely worth a visit if you’re looking for somewhere to eat in/near Buckden.
Excellent meal, hadn’t been to The George for a while and it exceeded my expectations. Delicious, generous and reasonable value
Unfortunately Saturdays menu was poor the food not up to usual standard. Bread was sticky and salty .main dish chicken was dry potato chips were over cooked
Wonderful lunch - great tastes - and good value. Well worth the 50 minute drive. Wish it was closer and I had time to do it more often!
Food & menu really lovely. Service good but room for improvement.
Staff were polite and attentive. Food excellent and good value for money. I'd happily go back
I booked the George for my husbands birthday . We choose the smoked salmon starter, very good. Then the Sunday roast which was only warm so we had to send it back, the Yorkshire pudding was so dry that we could not eat it. We then had desserts , I choose almond tart which was dry and not very almond ly. My husband had Black Forest gateau but once again very disappointing . Both things had obviously been bought in which we did not think the George would do. The staff were lovely so all was not lost but what a shame .I would loved to have been able to do a good review.
As always the George was excellent for our family lunch. We were all delayed by traffic problems and they were very accommodating about this. Enjoyed our lunch very much.
Our first visit to the George though we have lived in the area for over 30 years. We liked the decor and ambience in the bar and restaurant. We found the service a little slow but staff were attentive and helpful.
Food excellent.....Best beef I have had in a very long time
I am a local and live in Buckden and like to support the local businesses
I was actually undercharged by £78 on my bill.
When I got home and realised their mistake I walked back and payed the difference and the staff seemed very grateful of my honesty
But they are nice people so why ruin they day.
We went to The George for my Mums 90 th birthday . The lunch menu was lovely and such good value for money . A lovely restaurant with a nice feel to it . Advise booking ahead , but you won’t be disappointed. I had the smoked mackerel pate for starter , which was particularly outstanding.
We brought our daughter and her fiancé, who have booked their wedding breakfast here, for Sunday lunch. The food and surroundings were wonderful! We can’t wait to celebrate their wedding here.
All of the team were genuinely friendly, the service was impeccable. Nice environment and nice food. Nice place to go.
Had lunch with friends visiting from the USA, which we have done at The George before and were happy to return as they enjoyed their last visit. We were not disappointed, as usual, good food, friendly service and good ambience.
Menu was too fancy we didn’t eat as we didn’t like anything on the menu and the steak which was stirlion at that price should have been fillet
Tip.. put meals on there that appeal to everyone as well as the expensive stuff
Staff friendly restaurant ambience nice and warm food enjoyable worth paying little bit more than other places for Sunday lunch enjoyed meal
Very quiet as only one other table of three. Staff were welcoming and friendly without being overbearing. A good selection on the menu especially as my wife is vegetarian. Food was excellent. Great wine. Very relaxing atmosphere. I would recommend this to anyone.
Really excellent food and service. Good wine list and all reasonably priced. Very good standard of cooking, will be going again.
A very pleasant lunch with old friends, good food and service, we had a very enjoyable afternoon. Only comment would be that a 4th main course on the lunchtime table d hote would offer a little more choice.
Service was good. Portions are quite small and food is good, but not amazing. I find it always depends which chef is on. I had the roast and it was average.
Elegant classy venue, restaurant doesn't disappoint- food delicious, original and beautifully presented.
Good wines, staff friendly and helpful all in a lovely old building in a characterful village on the old North Road.
Great Meal. Kyle and all the staff made our evening very special.
Thank you
Philip & Joanne Oliver
Four of us had dinner at the George on Friday. By & large it was a great experience. The whole evening for me was slightly marred by my rather strange tasting steak. I left most of it . The maitre d noted this straight away & I was offered another or an alternative without any fuss at all. I declined as our friends had almost finished their main courses by this time. When the bill arrived they had not charged me for the steak which I thought was an excellent gesture on their part. We will certainly go there again next time we are in the area. Full marks to the staff for their excellent customer service & By the way, my wife & our friends thoroughly enjoyed their meals.
We were so disappointed with our meal from beginning to end. I ordered a curried crab salad and a plate of cray fish arrived. There wasn’t anything in the starter selection that I remember seeing with cray fish and was left with the impression that they try and pass off the much cheaper ingredient. I sent it back and a plate of crab arrived as my family finished their starters. I didn’t finish it as I was eating alone and it didn’t taste of anything at all. Main courses were all luke warm, non descript and our son had to visit the loo twice to spit out the very fatty sirloin steak- he hardly ate any of it as it had so much fat and gristle running through it. We all opted for the creme brûlée, which was fine apart from the shortbread, which managed to taste of absolutely nothing. To finish the meal, my husband ordered an Irish coffee which arrived barely warm and in a brandy glass...Such a shame, we had booked The George for my husbands 50th birthday and it really spoilt our evening.
Enjoyed many a pleasant meal at The George., and it is an ideal meeting point to catch up with long standing friends. The ambience is spot on and the staff are always friendly and quietly efficient.
My only criticism of our latest visit was that our main course, which 3 out of the 4 of us had, was rather tasteless and very dry. As we were in a group it wasn't convenient to say anything to the waitress at check back , but it was a rather disappointing course in an otherwise very pleasant lunch. We will definitely be returning.
We love The George and eat here several times a year. We booked a table under the awning in the courtyard as it is si warm. Super lunch and highly recommend the Lobster salad BUT wheeling out the sweet trolley is very awkward for the staff. The trolley is not covered and there were flies buzzing around the food. Much better in the summer to have a separate dessert menu and bring the food fresh to the table. Disappointed in the baked Alaska. Cheap icecream and meringue too sweet.
Great food, pleasant setting and good service. Overall a lovely lunch experience.
