The George Hotel is a 17th Century townhouse enjoying a wonderful location nestling on the water’s edge between the castle and pier in the bustling harbor town of Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight.

This magnificent building is steeped in history and was once home to the most noteworthy of the Island’s Governors, Sir Robert Holmes who often entertained King Charles II.

The George is ideally located in Yarmouth and offers a premium venue for parties. Sadly our visit was in the off season, so there was little atmosphere and only a few other tables were in use. We opted to share a pizza and a couple of salads as a light lunch. And while the service was good, rhe food was a little lacking. Rather than producing some sour dough bases, it seemed as though they'd been made with bread dough, so had the same consistency as shop bought bases. Not ideal if you're charging £18 for a single pizza. The staff were all very welcoming and friendly, but it was disappointing they were cleaning the bar and folding napkins at a table right next to the entrance to the dining room during service. They're jobs that should be completed before or away from the customer eye line in my view.

Very nice place to go for a special occasion as quite pricey. It was raining when we were there but can imagine sitting on the terrace in nice weather

We love eating at the George, it’s a beautiful setting - inside and out, the staff are fab and the food is always delicious. The views on to the sea and the pier are just beautiful and it has a really fun/relaxed vibe. We are repeat returners and already looking forward to our next visit.

The surroundings were very pleasant in the conservatory area and the tables well spaced apart. At first glance the menu is not an easy one to choose from, however after much deliberation we decided to order the whole roast chicken for two. It was not obvious from the menu how this would be served; would we need our electric carving knife. It was in fact spatchcocked and came with a herbs & spices butter. It was totally delicious and we would wholeheartedly recommend. We all commented that the menu would benefit from having a little more description alongside the dishes as that would assist in making an informed choice. Several, but not all of the serving staff knew exactly how various dishes were served when asked. The service was friendly and the atmosphere good. We would dine here again but would recommend perusing the menu ahead of visit to see that it meets taste preferences.

This is the 3rd time I’ve taken family or friends to the George in the last 3 weeks. I really think they are generally nailing it but I commented on my last visits the mains could be slightly more generous with more of the main ingredients like shell fish etc. Well I have to say on my last visit that has been put right and my main was superb! Well done the whole team from the kitchen to front of house! We had a fantastic lunch and afternoon and with young grandchildren to entertain the pirate sand castle worked brilliantly. Recommend to anyone what ever age! 😀👍

The moules mariniere were lovely and a very generous portion for lunch. The staff were friendly and the place was clean. It was ruined however by them taking a booking for 8 people (8 young men) who were so loud me and my partner actually gave up trying to speak as we couldn't hear each other. Their foul language and noise level wasn't appreciated by some families with small children either; such a shame as the start of our meal had been very enjoyable.
