The George Hotel is a 17th Century townhouse enjoying a wonderful location nestling on the water’s edge between the castle and pier in the bustling harbor town of Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight.

This magnificent building is steeped in history and was once home to the most noteworthy of the Island’s Governors, Sir Robert Holmes who often entertained King Charles II.

It was a lovely meal but the menu was very limited and the choice that there used to be of interesting food options has gone. Prices were high and the staff were young and inexperienced whereas before they were professional and trained. Many of the serving staff didn’t know much about the menu.

Food was delicious, location was great, staff very pleasant but disorganised and very slow. 20 minutes to get a glass of wine each time and we had to get their attention for everything (even food ordering, as we sat for 30 minutes before we managed to get them to take our food order). On booking we were told we only had the table for 1hr 30 but saving grace they did not chase us off the table. In spite of the service we had a lovely time.

The George in Yarmouth has a great location on the shore frontage, has a large patio area for outside dining and we felt it had a mediterranean atmosphere, although it was very popular on our visit with everyone sitting outside enjoying the great vibe and food, we decided to sit in the conservatory which was quiet but we loved the peaceful ambience. The food and service were, in our opinion, top quality, we shared the catch of the day which was a whole seabass and it was exceptional, all the staff were welcoming, friendly and personable, we had the most perfect lunch for my hubbys birthday, and loved the surprise dessert!!

The George is ideally located in Yarmouth and offers a premium venue for parties. Sadly our visit was in the off season, so there was little atmosphere and only a few other tables were in use. We opted to share a pizza and a couple of salads as a light lunch. And while the service was good, rhe food was a little lacking. Rather than producing some sour dough bases, it seemed as though they'd been made with bread dough, so had the same consistency as shop bought bases. Not ideal if you're charging £18 for a single pizza. The staff were all very welcoming and friendly, but it was disappointing they were cleaning the bar and folding napkins at a table right next to the entrance to the dining room during service. They're jobs that should be completed before or away from the customer eye line in my view.

Very nice place to go for a special occasion as quite pricey. It was raining when we were there but can imagine sitting on the terrace in nice weather
