Review summary

AI-generated from verified diner reviews
The Golden Fleece offers a "lovely atmosphere, friendly staff," and an extensive menu, though vegetarian options are limited. Visitors commend its "superb fish and chips," and "fantastic service." While some experienced menu shortages, the responsive staff often mitigates the impact. The restaurant is "dog-friendly" and offers "excellent views of Wells Harbour."

This was a disappointingly average experience food-wise and the service really wasn’t good. Very slow, they forgot our drinks order and also that I didn’t want vegetables but a salad. The salad when it came consisted of 2 lettuce leaves, 3 slices of tomato and half a raw onion. Poor.

Give this place a miss. An absolutely awful experience. We had been before, and it had been good enough to go again. The moment we walked in was a good start. Our table was ready, and we recognised a member of staff from our previous visit 9 months ago, so always a good sign. Unfortunately , that's where the good bits end. Out of 4 cask ales, NONE were available. A small sign said 'line cleaning', but you do not take all 4 off at once, especially when open. Then, we waited a long time to order, and by the time our food came we'd been there over an hour. We had to send 3 of 4 dishes back. 2 were burnt, and one was cold with 2 parts of the dish missing. Not even an apology from the waitress as she took them back, nor when she replaced them with fresh ones. The difference between the two old burnt ones and the fresh ones was chalk and cheese. Whatever gave the chef and waitress an idea that the first helpings were acceptable is anyone's guess. Even the third dish came fresh with all components present, so they must have known bits were missing the first time. On top of everything, no-one seemed to be in charge. There wasn't a manager onsite to deal with our problems which was frustrating. The waitress blamed the face that 'everyone came in together', and staff shortages, but that's not our fault. A manager, or someone with customer service skills should have been onsite. An apology would be the least I'd have expected, a little something off the cost of the bill may have been nice, but nothing came. This was possibly the worst experience we've had in our lives - a reminder, NO ales, 75% of our order returned to the kitchen , and no apology. Shocking. Leave well alone!!!!

First of all glad we booked for a Monday, the place was fully booked. Lots of places closed on Mondays which is understandable. My wife and our friend went for the flatiron chicken, which they loved, I went for homemade steak pie, my pie was a bit overcooked and made the crust hard, but was still delicious, I noticed others have pies which looked better, a couple near us had fish & chips which looked fabulous. Service was excellent and polite, beer selection was good and the wine list excellent, we had Dead Mans Dice a Malbec which was very good. We had a window view which enabled us to view the harbour. Overall an enjoyable meal and experience. Thank you, Golden Fleece

Lovely place, good beer and our meal was excellent, not overpriced and a lot better than others we have experienced in Wells next the Sea. We were even a bit early which meant we could eat earlier than our allotted time, there was not a problem with this

The Golden Fleece was our last option soon as how we had some very picky eaters with us, compared to others in the area the menu was really quite extensive with quite a few options. However, most of them are meaty and not many vegetarian options.

We have been visiting The Golden Fleece for many years, in groups ranging from 2 people to parties of 12, and have always had a really enjoyable experience. Unfortunately, this latest visit felt quite different from what we’ve come to expect. We arrived around 20 minutes early, let the staff know we were there, and had a drink at the bar while we waited. It was obvious they had had a busy day, as the staff all seemed quite harassed and under pressure. We were seated after about 10 minutes and given menus, but from that point onwards the service felt very slow. It seemed fair to assume they were short staffed, as there were considerable waits between being seated, ordering, and finally receiving our food. Requests for cutlery and sauces had to be made several times before they arrived, which became frustrating. There were also a few issues with the food itself, although to be fair these were resolved and refunded without issue. It was disappointing because we’ve always enjoyed coming here and have had consistently good experiences in the past. We will return, but probably just for drinks rather than food in future.

We were looking forward to a Sunday Roast, but on arrival we were informed there were none left. Several other things on the menu were also not available . Pies were but there was no gravy! What kitchen runs out of gravy??!! The front of house staff were very apologetic and did their best to serve us quickly and efficiently, although even the beer I ordered wasn’t available. The meals we settled for, were very poor to average in quality. My wife’s Sea Bass fillets with Risotto was an extremely small portion for a main course. There must be some issues with staffing levels and lack of know how in the kitchen that need to be resolved. I would definitely not recommend this pub for eating out.

Made a booking online due to it being a weekend. Arrived and was taken to our table. The waitress started by telling us what wasn’t available which wasn’t a problem. She then proceeded to take our drink order where I was told there were no large bottles of Prosecco in which I then enquired if there was at least a glass available (just in case they had an open bottle behind bar) and again I was told no followed by ‘you wouldn’t believe how much we’ve sold since Wednesday’ whilst laughing!! Yes but it’s now Saturday and I unfortunately don’t drink anything else!! So can’t comment on food as we left to find somewhere that did sell Prosecco which might I add was every other place in wells!!

FAQs

Generally warm, cosy and buzzy with a genuine pub feel and lovely harbour views. Many guests praise the friendly staff and lively atmosphere; it’s dog-friendly and often busy on weekends. Be aware some guests have experienced cold tables near the door, noisy service periods, or quieter spells, so ambience can vary by seating and time of day.

Casual, The restaurant lists 'Casual Dress' as the dress code. Guests typically visit in relaxed, comfortable clothing suitable for a seaside pub setting.

Yes, The Golden Fleece can be a lovely date-night spot for a relaxed, cosy meal with harbour views. Many guests praise the friendly staff, buzzy atmosphere and well-prepared pies, roasts and classics that suit a casual evening out. Pick a table by the front for a waterside view and aim for a quieter weekday or an earlier evening to avoid the busiest times. If you want a more intimate table, call ahead to request seating, guests report that specific table requests sometimes need reconfirming.

Portions are generally pub-style and often described as generous for Sunday roasts and main dishes, but guest experiences vary. Many guests praise hearty roasts, pies and large chicken portions; others have reported smaller or child-sized portions on occasion. Because availability and portion consistency have been mentioned in reviews, expect traditional pub portions most of the time but consider checking with staff when ordering if you want a larger plate or sides.

The Golden Fleece is typically open daily from 12:00 to 22:00. Guests should be aware that special events or holiday services may change hours, so it's wise to check ahead or call before visiting if you're planning a bank-holiday or seasonal booking.

Go midweek or earlier in the afternoon for a quieter experience. Guests report the pub is busiest on weekend evenings and Sundays (particularly for roast lunch). Arriving early on weekends or booking ahead helps avoid long waits; many guests recommend weekday lunches or early dinners for a more relaxed service.

Yes, guests mention outside seating that’s relatively sheltered and the pub’s prime harbour-front location, so outdoor tables are available and popular in good weather. If an outdoor table or a harbour-view spot is important, ask when booking to increase your chances of getting the seat you want.

Yes, The Golden Fleece is dog-friendly and many guests bring dogs; staff often provide water and treats. If you’re bringing a service animal, it’s still a good idea to mention it when booking so the team can seat you comfortably away from busier zones.

Midweek (Tuesday–Thursday) is generally the best day for a relaxed visit. Guests often enjoy quieter service and more reliable availability midweek, whereas Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays (especially for the roast) are notably busier and can have longer waits.

Typically yes, the pub advertises daily opening hours and has historically run special holiday services (including Christmas menus). However, reviews show holiday services can vary and have had major service issues in past holiday events, so always call ahead to confirm holiday openings and any special booking requirements.

Yes, guests commonly request window or harbour-view tables, accessible seating or space for dogs and larger family tables. Many guests recommend calling ahead to confirm seating and any dietary or allergy needs, as some guests report that pre-booked seating preferences or group requirements have occasionally needed reconfirmation.
