The Great Shefford
The pub is managed by the team behind King Charles Tavern in Newbury and The Broad Face Abingdon. Led by Joshua Khan, Georgiana Caras (General Manager) and Kevin Mulraney (Head Chef), our aim is to offer a friendly and relaxed environment where everybody is welcome.
As this is the Valley of the Racehorse, we’ve set aside a special area of welcome for those who want to keep their eyes on events on the turf in our dedicated Racing Lounge, with wide-screen TV and up-to-date editions of the sporting press.
We are open seven days a week, from morning through to late evening, serving lunch and dinner as well as simpler food offerings such as bar snacks and sandwiches.
- Surfaces sanitised between seatings
- Common areas deep cleaned daily
- Digital, disposable or sanitised menu provided
- Sanitiser or wipes provided for customers
- Contactless payment available
- Limited number of seated diners
- Distancing maintained in common areas
- Extra space between tables
- Sick staff prohibited in the workplace
Lovely ambience. Choice of dining areas. We didn’t want fine dining so opted for the lunchtime bar menu. Fish and chips superb. Staff friendly and attentive.
We went for lunch and were well looked after by the staff. The food was excellent, but the portion sizes are small which reflects the high standard of cuisine. So nice to have imaginative beautifully presented and delicious food. Keep up the good work.
Great food ,attentive service .Looking forward to returning soon .
Amazing food!! What a treat. We had scallops and venison- as good as anything we have eaten, including Michelin starred.
I felt that there was a disconnect between the quality of the food and the pub though. It’s beautifully refurbished but it’s odd to be eating such high end food with people walking past you to the beer garden carrying beer and without masks.
I also think that having heaters outside is not appropriate given that we are in a climate crisis
Beautiful pub in a great location, didn’t order from the new menu as it’s a bit gamey for my taste, we had a burger and sausage and mash, tasty meals but would have been nice to have more than 1 sausage cut into two and a smear of mash. Desserts were great.
The food was exquisitely presented, the staff were charming and professional.
Sunday lunch of roast pork loin was wonderful with good selection of veg cooked to perfection. The pannacotta dessert was to die for. Lovely friendly service to boot. For what more could one ask.
Nice to be able to add gratuity rather than have it taken as in neighbouring village pub.
All around excellent.
The 3 courses we both had were all really excellent but our main courses superb. One of us had the bream and the other the hake and both were cooked perfectly and the sauces with both dished went really well.
Polite customer service
Good varied menu
Great table service .
Dear PeteM, Thank you so much for your kind comments! We look forward to seeing you again soon! Kind regards, Jonny Dillon General Manager
Upper mid-range venue with lovely view of a stream at the rear - plenty of indoor and outdoor seating without overcrowding. Good selections of food and drink, staff very attentive, attractive decor.
Yet another great value and exceptional dining experience made all the better buy the very friendly hands on team

Great experience in the dining area. Lovely ambiance and nice music. Brilliant food and drink. Good value and friendly service too. Recommended!
Great food and drink, staff make you feel remembered and welcome. Great setting
Love this place and visit as often as I can. The food is fabulous and as well as the usual pub classics always offer some slightly different dishes. If the weather is nice the terrace is a wonderful place to spend time.
We had a very good dinner, delightful and friendly staff.
Lovely food and friendly staff!
Lovely new menu, beautifully cooked and presented. Nice not to have an overflowing plate, quantity does not equate with quality. Very good serving staff too.
Lovely peaceful place beside the river Lambourn. Food good value and well presented. Clean and tidy with attention to small details of cloth napkins, water with ice and lemon and a fresh flower on the table. Staff efficient and friendly.
Although we had a good evening, the Hake was not cooked properly which spoilt the main course. We did mention it to the waitress, but whether she reported it to the kitchen, we don't know. It should always be reported back, as people disappointed with their food are likely to not go back, so a little thing like this is easily avoided.
Good choice of wines.
Lovely setting by the river, great service too. Not huge portions but enough and reasonable value for money.
Fantastic food and lovely location next the river.
We had a lovely evening at The Great Shefford . The food was excellent and good value . The menu had a good mix , we were spoiled for choice. The wine list had a good choice including a lot of wines by the glass.
The staff were attentive without being pushy . The decor was relaxing and interesting , all very comfortable.
We would definitely revisit when we are in the area .
As Always a pleasure… food is always great… and staff always friendly and welcom8ng
Service and food excellent, lovely to be able to sit outside in comfort with covered seating area.
Lovely setting for a pub, right beside a chalk stream. We had Sunday lunch for 4 and had a lovely time. The food was good - we had roast dinners and also the vegetarian curry option (which was v tasty). The service was very friendly but a little spotty to start but I think we had a new/young server who was learning the ropes, nothing major just little things, when the pub manager stepped into help the standard we excellent.
Very reasonable bill at the end for 4 of us having 2 courses with drinks. All in all a lovely Berkshire pub lunch.
Perfect lunch stop at J14 off the M4. Riverside view, good food and b friendly attentive service.
Restricted menu but good ambience by the river. Head waitress was brilliant with attentiveness and enthusiasm. The junior waitresses should emulate her.
Food was very good. Will be returning next week.
Lovely venue, really friendly and helpful staff. Clean, fresh environment. Well presented and tasty food. My only criticism would be that both Starters and Mains did take a long time to come, over 20minutes, apart from that highly recommended
We had a roast dinner a few weeks ago which was fine, unfortunately this time the food was far from expectations, the potatoes were hard , hardly any veg and the whole meal was Luke warm, really disappointed as I had taken 4 members of my family out for a meal.
They were quite busy which often seems to be the case when a meal falls below par it appears to be because the venue can’t cope , the service was good and the surroundings very pleasant
Really good food in a beautiful setting. Faultless service
We had a lovely time the food came out really quickly and was delicious
The place is beautiful and excellent service, the staff were very friendly but the food let it down! We had fish n chips with untasty mushy peas! The fish was not crispy and chips were over cooked!! Sad cus the place is lovely!
Good riverside view. Food choice limited but salmon starter and fish and chips were good.
Another excellent lunch here - good food, lovely being out on the shaded terrace with the river running alongside. Very attentive service. Really love this place!
Easy parking out the front too.
Lovely setting by the river, the staff were really helpful and friendly. The food was very good but there could be a bit more choice for vegetarians and vegans. Really lovely time and very relaxing. Thank you
the service wasn't the best. We ordered a few drinks and waited 20 minutes for those. The food arrived and was nice. We ordered a second lot of drinks and waited 35 minutes before asking where our drinks were, the young girl didn't put the drinks through. I asked for the bill and it took 30 seconds for that to come out. Its a shame the service was like this as the pub is very nice.
Very good food and service
Fish and Chips shouldn't be a problem, but the Batter was not crisp and the chips soggy.
Beer good .
It was sunny and it was Friday and we eat outdoors.
